If you go in smurfy or the mwowiki you can usuallly see the number of missile tubes in each area. The arms only have 10 tubes and the side torsos only have 6 tubes. If you use more lrm or srm than this then they putter out in 2nd and 3rd volleys. Peek, fire, duck is the LRM boats life, embrace it.
Don't ever use more lrm than the number of missile tubes, because you will waste a lot of ammo, most of the time you will only fire one volley and then duck under cover. Your enemies will be doing the same, so if you fire more than 1 volley you lose the lock too far before the 2nd volley (and 1st volley lots of times). I always use 2 LRM10+art and 2 LRM5+art on my 5M (has the same number of missile tubes as the 5S). This allows for lots more ammo, and less wasted shots.
If I am going full lrm boat I will carry 2000 lrm rounds and fire them off 30 at a time like this. LRM20s are always a waste on stalkers except the 3H that has 20 tubes in each arm, 50 tubes is the max in the game at the moment, so you are definitely still top of the heap with the 3H.
Good advice all around, and I'm debating getting the 3H and making that one the LRM boat and then converting the S to a more conventional SRM or LL brawler. It just seems, with the total dominance of ECM, LRMs are pretty much wasted. I still do a lot of damage here and there, but it's always when an enemy is relatively close (500m or closer)...which kind of defies the point of a "long" range missile. Hoping they tweak the ECM soon. Not holding my breath.
The tubes is a good point - hadn't seen that part. Really, I started with the S because the AMS saved my butt so many times as a CDA pilot. I haven't regretted having it on the Stalker, either. Like I said before: maybe not the most effective power-gamer build ever, but it's fun.

Thinking about getting a 3H too. Not sure why I have the urge to sling LRMs though.
Me either, honestly. I think I just wanted to switch it up from other mechs, all of which are scouts or med- to short-range. I kind of wanted to be the one to sit back and benefit from others' TAGs and lock-ons. Unfortunately, most people seem to just shoot wildly rather than lock in their targets and it seems like TAGs are real rare, given the prevalence of ECM.
