I've upgraded my viedo card a few times but am running on a 5 year old machine, but I'm not concerned, hopefully it will play.

Game producers are restrcited by the system stats of the majority of the gaming population. (mostly)
Want better games? Make an effort to upgrade components once a year.
Not ALL your components, but getting an amazing video card and sporadiaclly upgrading RAM and maybe your motherboard over 3 years is VERY doable.
Getting into a cycle will keep you above the gaming average consistently.

The existence of the HUGE console market with its fixed hardware has pretty much ensured that upgrading is far less important than 10years ago. It doesn't really matter if every PC gamer suddenly has a high end machine when most games also have to run on a console. But you are right, that if you want to always have the best upgrading is a must.
Basically I would say that as long as you have a resonable GPU playing games shouldn't be a problem even with older PCs.

Like many gamers I can't afford to update my computer regularly.
Also, you seem to be under the misconception that I "want better games". Graphics are nice and all... but (as I've said numerous times in the last few months) MWO could be a graphical clone of MechWarrior 4 and I wouldn't give a ****. I realize that the inevitable rebuttal to that statement is "Well then just play MW4! It's free and your POS computer can handle it just fine." to that I reply with; I am. But I'd like to play in an active 'Mech game with a larger community than the 30-or-so 'mech fanatics I've been playing MW4 with. So I'm basically being forced to upgrade for MWO. Afterward... I probably won't upgrade again for another 6+ years as I'll be playing MWO until they take the servers offline and very little else.

WARNING: Back Up Your Computer and Go Slow (a few tweaks at a time).
Here is a sample list gleaned from the keywords "minimal minimize windows startup" adding "XP", "Vista" and "7" separately:
XP: Black Viper's Windows XP SP3 Config List
Vista: Increase Vista Performance by Trimming Startup Programs
Win7: Speed Up Windows 7
Many more out there. Please read through them carefully and keep track of your changes.

My download speed is 2.59Mb/s, and my upload is 0.80Mb/s, using Speedtest. That is a D+ rating and slower then 63% of Canada.

Being in Beta will help test MWOs performance on low end machines. And being available on lower end machines increases the potential player base. It is entirely reasonable that MWO should or will operate on junk computers.
I really hope so. I am slowly saving for something better.
