Do you think we will get another Assault or will the devs leave the 10ton gap between the Highlander and the Atlas?
I mean the Atlas already looks much less frightening now that we have Stalkers
and even less once we get Highlanders. Moreover there should be more light and medium mechs than Assaults, so I could undestand if we do not get another Assault in the near future.

Anyhow there are only few 95ton mechs that seem to fit the timeline:
Banshee
Executioner
Naginata
Nightstar (not sure if this one is extinct though)

Really I like none of those choices (The Executioner with 3 ballistics and 2 missiles maybe but then I see it's a clan mech)

(I know it does not fit the time line but I'd love to have one of those in my mech lab:
http://www.sarna.net/wiki/Sirocco)

But to be honest I want this one:

Posted Image

4 AC/2 in R/LT (a 4xLBX10 build would give me all the lolz)
2 Large Laser in R/LA
2 LRM15 in R/LT

So I vote Mauler and leave the Atlas his 10t gap so he can remain the king of the hill

Tl;dr
I don't want a 95t mech
1) All possible mechs are kind of crap
2) Let the Atlas some room
3) We need a ballistics focused Assault -> e.g. Mauler

Mauler has too few variants.

Sorry.

But then PGI has already shown to be quite flexible on this issue.
I mean come on Spider!?
One has 2med las in CT the other variant 2 med puls in CT and the third one as 1 medlas in CT and 1 in RA
And what about the Ilya?

Also look at the Stalker lots of variants that are all basically the same - one missile more one energy less.

MAL-1R
1 energy RA
1 energy LA
2 ballistics RT
2 ballistics LT
1 missile RT
1 missile LT

I think they could come up with something.
e.g. one variant without missiles but 2 energy HP in each arm
I'd also go with a variant without lazors and missiles but with 12 MGs

Spider has enough variants, all around during 3050.

Ilya is a Hero Mech, not a standard variant.

I can't wait to pilot a 95 ton mech with the armament of a crappy medium!

Banshee would fill the 95 ton slot (thus giving us an assault of every tonnage; 80 ton Awesome, 85 ton Stalker, 90 ton Highlander, 95 ton Banshee, 100 ton Atlas) and has plenty of variants, though the 5S is pretty much the superior variant.

Only way they could make the standard Banshee variants not awful would be to give them a lot of hardpoints despite the fact that it only has 3 weapons. Then again, the Cicada had 3 weapons and came out with 6 energy slots.

The only one that I think would be a good choice is the Executioner
(stock hardpoints 3 ballistic / 2 energy) since all other Assualts have lots of missle and energy hard points a more ballistic oriented mech would be nice.

Except its a Clan mech...

Agreed

But then let's look at those spider variants.

Spoiler

PGI will do a significant overhaul to those variants. So why shouldn't they be able to do it for the Mauler?
MAL-1R MAL-1K MAL-3R MAL-1PT5 (true all have the same HP but theoretically there are 3050 variants)
But to me also the Stalker variants are all the same. (Okay one got an aditional missile HP)
Compared to the diversity of e.g. the Catapult it's just all the same.

So although unlikely I think there is no rule that would prevent the Mauler.

On the plus side, the Banshee will actually be able to move faster than an atlas, having a standard movement speed greater than an atlas can attain with engine restrictions. 400XL should push it past 73kph w/ speed tweak.

Wouldn't the blame actually fall to FASA for making an assault without Ballistics?

Do you think they will release the Spider with just 2 CT lazors?
Actually I'd still buy one ;) just because of the cool looks.

But then what is your oppinion on the Stalker variants?
I am utterly disappointed with the lack of diversity. I got one and wont buy another.

Yes, I think they would, based on what they did to some of the stalker variants.

Also based on their decision to include the spider or flea at all when we already have the 2 god kings of light mechs [Jenner and Rave3n with ECM] in game.

I was very surprised that the 3H didn't have 4 Energy and 6 missile hardpoints.

I really don't know what the Spider or Flea will bring to the table that isn't already being done with the lights we have. The extra JJ might be nice, but not really a great selling point.

Then they can invent a Mauler variant. Shouldn't be too hard for them.

I suspect they're going to have to do this with several mechs that don't have 3+ wildly different variants.

It would be simpler and less restrictive if they didn't adhere to this 1:1 timeline nonsense.
