If I were ever to be so dishonorable, disgracing both my home, my family, my name and my Emperor - if I were to become one of the Dogs of War - well, my allegiance would be clear too:

Can I just join any faction or house or merc company, or is there some kind of trial, or experience level needed etc?

Take a look at the FRR section of the forum and read for yourself

You can join any faction/house but for mercenary companies you either have to start it yourself or be allowed in by the founder/recruiter of the merc unit.

I have a few specific things I like in a group. I do not like unreasonable authoritarian structures with excessive rules. Too much like work. I like a casual group of guys that gets along with each other that can each bring something to the table. People that are generally self-confident and know the game well. People who put their families before gaming. People who keep their word. For the most part no hot-heads, drunks, foul mouths or attention seeking drama-kings/queens. People who have balance and know when it's time to be done for the day so their real life does not suffer in negative ways due to in-game over-activity. Mature people for their age and tolerant of kids that are learning the game. Respectful to everyone and willing to apologize when mistakes are made. (mistakes...we all make them) Having a good leader is of paramount importance. I don't like being in goups with leaders that are weak, indecisive, and inconsistent. Good leaders are sometimes hard to find in the gaming world.
These are a few things I look for. Never found a perfect group out there and there are always some problem people in every group, so I am not expecting perfection by any means. Mainly just looking for a group that most closely reflects the things I have listed above.

I don't know if anyone here played as a tester in the Battletech 3025 beta but as a Liao player we were constantly launching sorties. Lots of action when your borders are nearly the majority of your controlled space.
If the clans ever invade, Smoke Jaguar. Assuming they don't go far enough to see them largely wiped out.

Ok thanks, I think I will decide when I see it working in game. Mercenary sounds like a lot of fun though.
