Limited hardpoints, not faster than any other light, no ECM. It's only use is no more than that of a non-ECM commando as far as I can see. The Spider looks non-sequitur in the light line of mechs at this time. If PGI raised the speed cap, I could see the use for a smaller faster scout, but until that happens is there any reason to want this mech in a drop?

probably not. the speed cap ruins it's only advantage, it doesn't have anything else. the maps are too small for it anyway; any utility it would have in getting to and identifying an enemy would be wasted when it only would arrive 5 seconds earlier due to how tiny maps are.

As a signature Kurita light mech, I feel I am honor bound to at least try it. People do select mechs for reasons other than just pure effectiveness.

Sounds like a challenge. I love this thing in BT. I'll be getting 3! Maybe this is the mech that you'll be embarrassed to be killed by...

Lets just hope they make proper adjustments to ECM / missiles so that its not murdered by the FOTM ravens. But then again, a Jenner with 2 streak would make quick work of a spider as well.

Anyway, I'm just hoping for a JJ adjustment to come with the spider.

Because the lag-shielded lights need to be even faster. Yeah, no thanks. Besides not every mech was created equal, but that just makes kicking *** in them even more of a challenge. Wanna brag about downing that Atlas as a light? Do in a mech with a single med laser and two machine guns.

You've just convinced me to buy one. Not only by your comment... but by your handle

I mean it's not even arrived yet so it can't be DOA.

I could see some interesting things being done with it, but not by me.

It looks like it's meant to fill a similar niche to the Commando (a ninja ankle biter) but with ballistics rather than missiles, and jump jets to boot. Sure, it can't brawl, but a good pilot wouldn't regularly get into a situation where that would matter.

Dart in behind the enemy, dakka dakka, scamper off before they can do anything. Rinse and repeat. If that's not what you like to do, then it's not going to be a good choice for you.

But don't say that it (or anything else, really) is crap just because it won't be able to do direct combat.

EDIT: slight expansion

.25 tons each, with some real height for this thing, to meet the fluff would be great!

You might be able to mess around with jump jets if this thing moves particularly fast through the air with the jump jets. If not, how would it be any better than a Jenner with jump jets? I can not imagine seeing this mech in an 8-man, but maybe in a 4-man slop drop for giggles.

Well, since each jumpjet increases acceleration rather than jump time, a spider full of jets should take off pretty darn fast.
Ninja AC/10 to the back light jumper?

The only way this Mech will actually be a viable choice is if they make jump jets more effective. Which is probably why the promo banner has a Spider with jump jets active.

Still the loadout seems less then what is offered by any of the other light mechs, even a commando. I feel that for it to be truly good, there would need to be some sort of tonnage system in place. Right now, 2 ML won't cut it.

With Jenners, Ravens and Cicadas all running as fast if not faster than a spider because of engine restrictions hit and run isn't exactly a viable tactic. Just get your rear cored by streaks faster.

I plan to play em like I play my Jenner, which I'll take vs a raven any day.

JJ effectiveness more than anything else is going to decide the Spiders fate.

Yes unless they fix/improve machine guns, flamers, and Jump Jets, the Spider won't be around long.
