This is what MWO night vision looks like (in year 3050):

This is what modern 3rd generation night vision looks like (in about 2000+):

As someone who spent hours looking at things through 3rd gen NVGs in real life, I can tell that MWO's night vision is annoying, horrible, and makes no sense.

Annoying:
Looking through MWO's NV is like looking through a toilet bowl with a hole in the bottom that is illuminated with a bright green flashlight from the inside during a night with no moon or any kind of ambient light whatsoever.

Horrible:
NV is simply not as useful as thermal vision. Gameplay-wise, NV mode is severely inferior to the other vision mode or the naked eye. If it was a game-design decision to limit NV in comparison to the naked eye, then why is it that thermal (the other vision mode) is actually better than naked eye in nearly all types of engagements except for an up-close brawl?

Makes no sense:
The lack of starlight and glowing buildings (Hot buildings? Momma is cooking at night?) indicate that your night vision uses long-wavelength infrared light (the one used in the real-world thermal technology); however, then mechs should be the brightest things of all, especially when they are running hot. Even in the generation one night vision the working range is 750-800 nm, which means that the sky is usually the brightest thing of all.

You really have no clue how NV works, which I would have absolutely no problem with if MWO's NV mode was at least ok to look at. It looks completely unnatural, nothing in real life looks like that (at least as far as I've seen). It is also border-line useless in the game and, again, downright ugly.

Sorry for being so offensive.

Apparently we since Battletech was invented in the 80s, we are limited to 80s night vision lol

You get that weird distortion in the left hand side of the screen from Night Vis too, huh?

Looks like distortion but that's actually how the barrels are shaped...

I'd be ok with the buildings not glowing so ******** bright green. It hurts my precious eyes! :D

Thermal vision is still better.

I just want the NV mode from closed beta back. :D

No screenies (cause, you know, there was an NDA), but it was more like this:

But with MW:O grain, less detail, yadda yadda yadda.

I must agree with the OP on that one.
Night vision use to look better but had no real use, now it could be useful but is impossible for me to look at.
I am not sure where they were going with it but I feel it should be added to the “needs improving” list right after the “requires improving” list.

imma give it a shot too.

its like looking down my throat with a torch stuff up my butt, and as the light passes my intestines a weird green blur emerges through my stomach acid.

next.

I *think* it's supposed to emulate the effect of broadcasting UV light and then viewing the short-wave spectrum (that's maybe why it has the flashlight effect)... as opposed to thermal long-wave. Personally, I don't use NV - I haven't found a use for it yet.

Hell yes. I never understood why they went green - the grey was much nicer.

That would make sense in an environment of total darkness, but the amount of starlight on the night river city map indicates that IR-based vision would be infinitely more useful. Also, if it was the re-/deflected UV light that mechs are emitting, the amount of light would differ from how many mechs are around and mechs would look like light bulbs.

This is from a color blind perspective. I prefer PGI's current night vision over the other as it makes visual combat more difficult with shadows in it, a shut down mech could hide in these shadows as an example (thermal of course prevailing). The real seems to take day vision and just turn it green. No thanks.
I will admit the current version is a bit bright.
I like the black and white alot.

Agreed on many levels, though realism doesn't really matter to me so much because video game. I got all nerdcited when you started talking about nanometers of electromagnetic radiation. Though I thought IR spectrum went from 700-1000 nm. I don't know very much about IR though.

Actually the light amplification(aka the green blur) is the oldest one and its on the end of use , more and more night vision system are shifting toward the IR Posted Image

the cost become to close the cost of the regular NA models and the size also become smaller !Don't forget that NA is dated from the end of WWII (if i remember right ).
Here few more :

imo

nv and thermal suck.
the idea of it is "cool" but the implementation of it in a game destroys the essence of good graphics.
those 2 maps (you know what im talking about) make me ask, "why am i playing this game?"

Totally irrelevant to discussion but I was wondering why OP's HUD looks a bit squashed.
