This is something Lawyers and Suits worry about. Microsoft wanting to keep its IP making money and IGP wanting to protect its investment. Almost 100% chance PGI has zero to do with this.

Actually the early emails sent to KingLeer, the lead dev over at MWLL, were from high ranking PGI employees. These emails, some say threatening, were sent a while ago.

IE PGI suits beholden to IGP and MS. Let me know when it was the Dev team sending nasty emails.

So you posted it before they get to work.

Yes, and the thread's made by me, so you'll likely be allowed to pay your respects. That's all I can do, brah. I tol' you this would happen, though.

I warned you.

But a good thing about this is, we can now apply proper pressure to PGI. There's nowhere left to go. The players will be lost forever, or they'll be playing this mechwarrior forever.

While I do not necessarily agree with it, I'm quite surprised it didn't happen much..much sooner.

Having only briefly dabbled in LL I don't have the same impassioned remorse... I can neither fault whom ever issued the cease and desist nor admonish the actions taken.

That said, It's sad to see a group of independent developers who put as much time and effort into the LL product to have their hand forced and feel the cold unfeeling slap of our litigious society.

are we really going to get teary eyed over a game mod that at most had 77 players online at any one time?

having said that, it would appear that at some point along the way, some of the people involved in MW:LL decided to form a company called Wandering Samurai Studios, which may have something to do with their being no longer allowed to get away it

also, they mention that the loss of rights is because the rights holder of the "NON-COMMERCIAL" licence from Microsoft has decided to stop supporting the MW:LL Dev team... IGP/PGI would have a COMMERCIAL licence, not a non-commercial one
so I'm not sure that IGP is behind this, it sounds more like a falling out between the friends behind MW:LL

This is completely true and I can verify it as an ex staff member on the project.

MWLL has like 0-50 players. fragmenting the player base indeed...

And this is the reason.

Jetfire, with all due respect the push to do this did not come from MS. It came from PGI directly with MS backing them up.

PGI wants to be the top player by removing people that aren't even competing in their "league" so to speak, that's the story here? Sadness. They should hire MWLL devs even if all they did was teach them some work ethic and integrity of purpose.

Shame, PGI. You are wearing it. Right there on the front. Way to George Lucas the IP (pre-Disney). Now it's safe from those evil people who only made MWLL out of love for the game. Classy.

That sucks.

I never played it, but it can't be a good feeling having all your hard work frozen because of legal issues.

Maybe they can work for PGI and speed up the process lol.

As if lol if they did that this game would improve a million times over.
Cannot have that can we? nope

Just a thought, if the NGNG team really represented the BT community, they would ask the devs some difficult questions regarding the shutting down of mwll. It is about time NGNG stopped its forays into sycophancy.

Indeedy, but looking at it from their perspective, even a whiff of that might be a really quick way to never have any PGI staff on their show ever again.

It's funny because you don't know and aren't a MWLL dev.

Don't see that happening really.

How many clicks do you think NGNG gets from players here due to the pushing by the MW:O marketers, and now its the only game in town.

I agree on the principle, but I doubt that would happen as a practical matter.

NGNG was bought by PGI ages ago. We call their podcast the goldcast for a reason.

Some of us invested years of game time into that mod. Some of us realized the amazing thing they had done with a long dead IP when no one else would pick it up (until MWLL was seen winning mod of the year). So if you don't have anything nice to say, take your leave and continue grinding up your modules.

and you can still play it - they are only stopping releasing new content

just read that you can play it on the demo of crysis wars, so I might actually try it if it's available for free

This was the sanctioned non commercial license by Microsoft afaik. Well maybe some of them apply for one of the positions at PGI - would make sense :-)

Some did. PGI. Most were ignored.

They needed a "company" in order to get the license to make the game.
