I upgraded my engine, dropped a few weapons and have gone for a light cavalry approach... quickly moving around the fringes of the battle, softening up heavies for my comrades (AC/20) with hit and run tactics that use cover to get back out of sight. As the battle progresses, that kind of morphs into a sort of jackal mode, where damaged mechs get cored by the same AC and finished with pulse lasers. I RARELY go toe-to-toe with anything, instead doing quick passes between cover and allies and making my AC shots count.
I've noticed my K/D ratio improving as a result... this is the only build that is getting me 3 kills per match (not consistently, haha, no way) and it's a lot of fun to play. It's high-risk, though... as when I have a "bad" match, I have a HORRIBLE match. I'm either the first one to die, or the last one... Usually it's due to miscalculation and attempting to flank a mech and turning a corner to find myself in the middle of four or more. That's a downside of a big engine in a heavy chassis... hard to react quickly. At that point it's usually try to find an open spot to break through the other side of their formation, try to hit something on the way through, jink and zigzag as much as a 70 ton frame will let you at 84kph, then pray for no crit back-shots before you find cover.
It's exhilarating! Feels kind of like a jousting knight sometimes.
What's your preferred style? I know you've tried them all but, what do you keep coming back to?
