It's normal for a closed beta to have but a small fraction of the community involved in it.
Remember! The Founder Packages are a ONCE in a lifetime option! Not only are you ensuring yourself access to the Beta for an indeterminate amount of time, but you're helping offset PGI's initial expenses and moving them towards making a profit off the game quicker.

If they're needing more beta testers, it can only be because the coders are getting idled. That is very, very good.
The launch date is set in stone, but the advance purchasing guaranteeing a slot in the open beta is a brilliant move. It allows collecting revenue on game sales, and giving people a big window to hit the opening sales day. Opening day sales are huge, and the momentum will help sell even more copies.
Meanwhile, the massive open beta allows the servers to get pounded on before release by a forgiving crowd (beta test, remember?) so on opening day, new customers won't get frustrated by network/server issues.
I posted a while ago a promise to pre-purchase at full retail price in order to get in on the beta. I hope that it influenced the founder's packs. It's nice to prevaricate to oneself that I've done something to help my fellow man.

Same for me. I just hope Piranha wants my money badly enough to accomodate us non-NA players in this aspect( we don't need our own servers that badly, but we would like to migrate later on and take our founder-stuff with us!)

Except for the part where almost every MMO release I've been part of so far (And that goes all the way from Anarchy Online to World of Tanks. I've seen a LOT of MMO releases), no matter how hard the servers got pounded and subsequently fixed and improved, launch day still inevitably sees the servers buckling under the strain.
On launch day, expect the massive influx of users all trying to play at the same time to cause issues. It may last for only a few hours or for a particularly bad launch, as long as a week before things stabilise and the servers both get upgraded to handle more users and the surge of players from the launch drops off a little.

Open Beta testers are a forgiving croud? Not in any of the Open Beta tests I've done, especially those who get Open Beta access through pre-ordering or other paid-for bonuses.

As with all things in life, you have to determine whether such a thing in a video game that is designed for entertainment is worth your money or not. If you're hard pressed for money, then it's best to just ignore the offer and wait for the game to come out for free and play it then.
Like you said, once it's out, you can then spend your money how you see fit. Founder status is just an item of prestige. I'm sure PGI is appreciative of anyone who buys products from the game and helps them turn a profit on MWO.

The Elite Founder Mechs not only come with a custom skin, but when used, provide a C-bill earning bonus. This effect is tied to the Mech (not the pilot).
