Good Idea!
(Of course, as a free player, I am maybe looking at my own interests)

I agree with Volume that there needs to be a way to get mechbays without using MC.
Why? So PGI can make more money.
Now you might be thinking, "Vechs, WTF, how does that work?"
Well essentially, I would make mechbays be maybe 15 million C-Bills, or 30,000 GXP, something very expensive and grindy, so getting a "free" mechbay would be a big timesink, but it would be doable. This is so PGI can say "Hey, you can do everything in this game for free, if you really want to invest the time."
But here's the thing -- the main purpose of doing this is to drive MC sales. If someone is sitting there grinding for hours just for a mechbay, and they have that 300 MC unlock button staring at them every time they return to the mechlab after a battle, the temptation is going to make a lot of people cave in.
They have to ask themselves "Is a 8 hour+ grind worth it when I could just pay them a few dollars?"
The people that still choose to grind instead of paying the 300 MC are the ones that either cannot or will not ever buy MC -- but PGI still needs as many free players as they can get, because the free players are game content for us paying players.
One more thing -- studies have been done that show that players who buy Pay Currency in a F2P are very likely to become return customers and buy more in the future. That first sale is the hardest, and I think there is potential here for PGI to basically, well, coax some free players into that first tiny sale with a big grind.
But we already have a 'big grind' mechanism in place - using 4 Mechbays to Master/Elite a Chassis. If this grind isn't enough to attract sales of MC, why would another 'grind' mechanism do any better?

At this level of enjoyment, supporting the product with 1-2 bucks really isn't asking too much. And if it is ... well, suck it up and sell one of the 'Mechs. Can always re-purchase it, after all. This really is just a question of comfort, not in any way affecting ingame performance.

Because this one doesn't rely on removing content from players (their mechs they bought).

In my opinion the need of mechbays is the best driver behind buying of MCs. Heck, I bought 1250 MC pack and it got rid of difficult balancing between buying and selling of Fun-to-play/Variant-I-need-to-play mechs.
Not pay-to-win, but pay-for-convenience.

$7 gets you 4 extra mech bays. Either suck it up or go play Farmville.

MWO on the other hand gives you 4 free mech bays and doesn't limit any of your functional content. (just cosmetic) This is a very good deal for free players.

A case of a broken clock being right two times a day or just a valid sense of correctness? I'll let you decide.
I too agree with him on this point, though I think it has to do with (in this case) keeping his point short and sweet. Not trying to relentlessly hammer a square peg into a round hole...

Yes, but compare it to League of Legends and it seems a little lacking. In League every character can be aquired with in game currency, and you are not limited to the number of characters you can own. The only thing to spend cash on are skins and time savers. In MW:O on the other hand you can only purchase most of the mechs with in game currency and you can't keep them all because you are limited in space. So I don't see a problem with allowing them to aquire mech bays over time like I suggested a few posts back.

You would appear to be in the gross minority, as well as on the wrong side of PGIs revenue model...
That's nice?
It's just my opinion.
League of Legends and other such DOTA style games provide ways for players to have every single, "Hero," available without a purchase. I believe that it could be done here and promote more players to join. These DOTA style games sell skins for, "Heroes," rather than selling the, "Heroes," themselves.
A lot of times, intelligence is drowned out by the driveling masses... just saying.

See, now gettingthat song by ALANIS MORISSETTE stuck in my head after posting that is something I would expect from you.
Since I don't know if you're old enough to remember this song, I'll just have to hope:
We are the world, we are the children
We are the ones who make a brighter day
So lets start giving
There's a choice we're making
We're saving our own lives
Its true we'll make a better day
Just you and me
