I do not know of any introduction threads, sorry.
Until you have played 25 matches you will only be able to post in the New Player Help section.

This forum topic is old but still updated daily with fresh questions and answers.
Technically an introduction probably belongs in the General Discussion or even off-topic, although I've seen a few here in New Player Help as well (tossing in a question or two wouldn't hurt and would keep it firmly on-topic for this subforum)

My information may bit outdated as I haven't done too much group play for around 6 months.

The Social button gives you access to Friend invites, group invites, etc. The game's front end does not provide any lobby or group chat, though, so you will likely need a 3rd party option to actually find & meet people to group up with.
MWO has several large public services to meet other pilots(public servers so you can find people to group with without needing to join an organizxd unit) here are the addresses to a few of them: http://mwomercs.com/...then-look-here/, as well as we have lots of faction subforums here on mwomercs.com where you can look for a group to join.

I keep getting 404 and 403 errors when trying to access the forums. This occurs even if I google MWO as opposed to using a bookmark etc.
Keep trying and eventually I get through, but today it every other click gets the error. As in I finally googled a link directly to Training Grounds and so could post here, but if i click Forums to try to navigate to the Tech Support area...403 forbidden.
Is this a known issue? Is there something I can do? FTR, the PC hasn't had any changes etc.

Forum indexes are acting up.
this works fine http://mwomercs.com/...ew-player-help/ but not this one http://mwomercs.com/.../?showforum=101 and http://mwomercs.com/forums/ doesn't work either.
There are links at the top that say TRAINING GROUNDS DEVELOPERS' CORNER MWO UNIVERSE SUPPORT & FEEDBACK OFF TOPIC and you can use those to visit most of the forum sections.

Meant to say I was having trouble with those links as well. But at least I know it's not something under my control so I will deal with it till they get it sorted out.
Thanks!

I bought my first real mech, a Cataphract 3D. It comes with an XL280 engine, but I don't want to use an XL engine here, because enemy hits my side torsoes pretty often. So I decided to buy a standard engine, but I don't know how to chose the proper size. Should I stay with 280 engine rating and drop one of my AC-s, or downgrade a bit, to for example to a 255 (max. engine to Cataphract 4X, so could be handy later) to keep more of my current loadout? Or just keep XL?

Well, Standard or XL has a pretty big impact on the rest of the build. I can't offer specifics on which engines are great for the CTF, but if it were in my mechbay I'd start by browsing mechspec.com to look for trends http://www.mechspecs....0;sort=ratings

Thanks mate. I found this earlyer, but doesn't help much, there are builds from STD225 to XL325, I didn't find a clear trend here.

1. Ok ok, maybe I just never realized, but why the hell does an LB10 cost more than ANY other ballistic weapon. 800,000? Seriously?
Questions 2, through 4 were answered quite well.
Question 1 was answered but I thought I'd chime in.

Often people create a new thread in the new player forum (usually where they also go for help and to read on comments in regards to their evolution from new player to experienced one) or they go to the Faction or Hiring Hall forum topics where they either introduce themselves to a faction or put themselves up on the market to get hired (recruited) into a merc unit.

as you probably already know, standard vs XL is a tradeoff, the XL weighs about half as much for the same rating but makes you more vulnerable.
I would suggest playing trying a few different build here:
http://mwo.smurfy-ne...9f4d0057499ee1d
Smurfy is a really useful website for designing a Mech build before buying anything. the above link is to the stock CTF-3D, I had a quick play around and it seems you can upgrade to double heat sinks (almost an essential upgrade anyway) and Endo Steel structure, you can then put in a standard 280 and have 1.5 tones left over for ammo, but play with the build and decide what you like.
also keep that engine, there are some Mechs where you will rarely loose a side torso so there is no real downside to using an XL on those Mechs, XL engines are really expensive and the XL280 is a really useful engine to have.

Any idea of what kind of build you want to bring with the finished mech?

I would recommend that you don't buy ANY new engine for your Phract. I'd recommend you try to save up your money, then buy a second variant that comes without the XL. You'll need a second one to master the one you have anyway, and this way you can just swap the engines to play with different builds rather than shelling out half the cost of a new mech just for an engine you may or may not like.

To be perfectly honest engine sizes in Battletech were determined by mech weight and while the engine choices were few the weight changes were drastic.
As much diversity as having those limits would have in MWO (instead of just going half a ton lighter with your engine to fit something, people would have to make real hardcore decisions and to make up for it they would use weapons they would never consider right now), you have free reign in what you choose.
Have you used Smurfy? That's set on a 3D with 280 standard engine, 4 ML, some heatsinks, endo steel. 18 tons left. A 255 engine gives you more 22 tons to work with. 300 gives you 16 tons to work with. I wouldn't go higher than 310, however.
First decide whether firepower or speed is more important. If speed, build with the engine first. If firepower, get the weapons and ammo that you want and then determine the largest engine size which the mech can still handle from there.
You probably do not want to go slower than a 255 engine in a Cataphract 3D. Just the name alone screams "Kill me" thanks to the meta-gamers.
