we don´t need healers... and ravens don´t need enhanced critdamage when they backstab someone "out of the shadows"...
oh, but stalkers sure need a "panic bubble" ...

Well, BT lore does actually allow for a relatively basic form of self repair: http://www.sarna.net/wiki/HarJel
It's a gel that fills in wholes in mech armor (if hit by a crit it makes all weapons and ammo in that section useless). Too bad it comes in 3059...

It's used in elementals to block bleeding, and in spaceships to fill holes to prevent air loss. Weapoins would cut right through it however.
Battlemechs can't be repaired in the time frame that games are played in, (hours at a minimum for armor repair/replacement, longer for internal equipment.)

I suppose I put too much weight on the last sentence on the page: "Harjel II and Harjel III Auto-Repair Systems, Harjel evolutions introduced in the Age of Destruction, are prodigious automatic repair device for light and medium 'Mechs." and kind of ignored the other stuff. I wonder when the AoD versions come out...
EDIT: AoD is in the decade of 3130, so it'll be quite a while...

we can throw that out the window and what we can do is repairs can be based on weight as 100 ton mechs can take 100 seconds to "field" repair while lighter mechs take shorter time. it doesn't even need to be a full repair, a repair based on how much armor you have left
-repair time is based on damage, weight and armament.
-if you still have armor, you can get repaired to an extent, red to orange or yellow
-missing parts and armor do not get replaced
-those who come back multiple times for repairs or do not have enough damage WILL be rejected
-internals are untouched due to complexity,
-maybe some ammo is given to you based on your stockpile
-player must shut down in a designated bay and is open to fire
-team must defend "off" mech until repairs or face having an open target
-if a repairing mech is damaged in-repair, the repairing stops
-if an "off" mech is attacked, the PILOT is responsible for turning the mech back on
-if a mech dies in the repair bay, all users must wait (2 seconds * mech weight) before being able to use the bay
-ECM/BAP/TAG/NARC rules still apply to repairing mechs
-Bays can't be "Destroyed" can can be "damaged to the point where that shut down"
*what we want to do is make it sort of realistic, sort of fun, with more tactical choices and more pressure. Canon takes a back seat when fun and tactics are around.
"can I retreat to repair or can I duke it out a bit more for damage and help others?"
"lets see if anyone is open to take out while repairing?"
"can you cover me while I repair?"
"can I trust that I won't be fired upon while shut down?"

I CAN see something like hosing allies with Water/Coolant. But that is about it.

where people have choices of what to fight others with or without, and have the choice to fight with items that feel "good" to them and where people have a choice of either, while having the ability to be forced outside your element. Do you know what that is called?
Community Warfare.
please understand that the best way to ensure the longevity, and dignity of this game is to give players choices, "you don't want that? here's this, either way you're still helping the big picture"
giving players a choice of what they want or do not want is the best way to make this game "fun"
so yes, I endorse Repair bays for the sake of fun, as long as the "HARDCORE FANBOYS" can choose not to play with them in their little world, and not feel like their being shortchanged by those who have it.
1 life games can have drastically higher rewards, other game types can have lower rewards.

What you need to understand is the hardcore fans of the Battletech universe are also the ones more likely to spend money on things like hero mechs (especially if it is a mech from one of their favorite characters in BT lore). Bringing in "healer" mechs would cause so many of these fans to quit it does not at all help the longevity of the game.
Repair bays are fine in a player vs environment setting, but not at all suitable for the direction this game is going. While a lot of things are different from the lore, PGI said they would try to stick to it as much as possible. The fans of the BT universe have tolerated a lot already and will be forced another they don't like when a respawn game mode is released. Don't ruin this for us PLEASE.

Special challenge mode. Defend your farm with the beaters you have on hand. Against a bunch of junky pirates with a mix of light mechs and light vehicles, and that would actually be really fun.

when you are yellow or orange that means PARTS of your armor ARE destroyed... so... just no...
just to give you some ideas, i´ll describe a warscenario in THIS universe we play in:
lets say you are Merc, and have a contract over amonth, to defend some industrial plants...
the first fewdays nothing happens. you walk out with your lance and do some combat patrols...
suddenly one day you get the message: "enemy force detected, all defending units to XY"
so you go there, and face a medium lance, appearently checking for information.. you fight a bit, hurt them and they slightly damage you... they retreat...
you hurry back to your base, the techs immediatly get buisy and start to repair your mech... armor plates get replaced, a few bolts and seams get replaced or fixed, smoke and fire all over the place... for at least a few hours...
while you are asleep: alert! a large force of enemy mechs come for you, you and your company walkout in full strenghth...you are happy to have one of the best techs around, all your armor is replaced... at least your system overview says that...
a hard battle occurs, some mechs get disabled, some destroyed, one of your comrades dies...good guy...
but you manage to fight the enemy off... their hard damage and many losses force them to retreat...
your mech? a destroyed torso, a few components also, an AC weapon jammed, and a crackin the reactor hull... you slowly make it back into the base.you see a heavy carrier leave the base, heading for the destroyed mechs, escorted by 2 light tanks... you hope you will get someparts out of the salvage...
you climb out of the cockpit, sweatfloating like a waterfall... the first you hear from your tech:" oh my...the poor machine! this will take at least a week to fix this, what, for blakes sake, did you do to her?"
yea, so as you walk to your quarter you start to pray that they won´t attack again while half your mech is dismantled...but on the other hand, half a mech is better than nothing...
