After seeing that many users are running sub-optimal designs and inefficiency choices with regard to heatsinks, endo steel, and engine size, I and other high experience, top tier players would like to offer our services to your mechs - to ensure that they are optimized efficiently.

What are we going to do:
  • We will ensure that you have have maximized the available tonnage given the design
  • We will ensure that critical slots and hardpoints have been used effectively
  • We will offer suggestions in situations where you have choices for larger weapons or equipment
  • We ARE NOT going to change your basic loadout. This is still your baby, we just want to ensure that she's happy and healthy and everything she can be. If you want a Large Pulse Laser, an ER PPC and an AC/2 -- that's great, we wont change it, we will just make sure it is designed efficiently

Hardcore competitive players are going to get nothing much out of this thread - almost all of them already know how to optimize designs and make them efficient. This isn't a challenge to "prove us wrong," by submitting an already optimized design - the purpose is to help players. But don't be afraid to submit a design if you are not sure - if it's already optimized, we will say so.

Finally, for some of you who might not be sure -- I guarantee results for any design with the following criteria:
  • Running Single Heatsinks
  • A Light, Medium, or Heavy without Endo Steel
  • An Assault running anything below a 250 Engine
  • Anyone running LRM10s or LRM20s with an unused missile hardpoint (non-Narc)
  • More than 0.5 tons left unused
  • More than 14 critical slots left unused
Again - even if you are not sure about whether or not your build is, yet, optimized, share it here with us and we will make sure that it is the best that it can be.

Use this: http://mwo.smurfy-net.de/mechlab to construct your builds.

What's your recommendation for an LRM boat stalker loadout of LRMs and MLAS?

(I have what I think to be a good loadout, just want to see if you have an angle I haven't considered and it will give you something to warm up on).

This is the ghetto king. There's no way you can tamper with it without making it worse.

I am pretty sure I could, but at that point it stops being a poor build and starts being pure malice and spite.

It kind of depends - because one of the big hard choices you have to make for yourself is whether or not you want to risk an XL engine, and exactly how much LRMing you wanted to do.

Something like this comes to mind: http://mwo.smurfy-ne...10adab7233e5cde

Boat big or boat home. :P But I do want to emphasize that I'd encourage players to post their own builds so that we can improve upon them.

Example:

BEFORE (actual player's mech loadout): http://mwo.smurfy-ne...44cb0a2f6707002

AFTER (Improved and more effecient): http://mwo.smurfy-ne...838ec6d9e0dc8ed

Man, I don't want to be that guy but doesn't the entire Battlemech sub-forum pretty much exist for this purpose? I know you can find me and other regular members in there all day e'rr day offering tips on how to improve your mech.

That said, I do like it when mech junkies offer advice to improve another persons design or personal ride rather than just dump on it and tell them to ride whatever flavour of the month is big. So I appreciate the spirit of the thread.

I'm pretty sure that no one ventures beyond the General Discussion board into the uncharted lands of the other subforums.

Great - this is exactly what I was talking about.

Here you go, optimized:

http://mwo.smurfy-ne...cb3ce66327af94c

Same build, but a little faster, more leg armour and an extra ton of ammunition, without giving up anything.

In fairness, the Awesome hasn't really been a good mech for a long time now, and the 8T has always been the red-headed stepchild of the Awesome lineup.

Threw these two ideas together:

http://mwo.smurfy-ne...4378252e9a05dc3

http://mwo.smurfy-ne...109eed8a9a8e47d

But the SRM nerf isn't doing them any favours. It's not a great mech in general, but these might be functional.

You can also drop AMS and a 1/2 ton armor from legs for another heat sink and a mlas in the head.

Yea, i can see that, if I want to drop the cbills on an xl 310 that would give me a little bit more. I don't know why I wouldn't buy a 310 though, I've got nearly 50 mil sitting in the bank.

I thought large lasers too when I saw those 4 energy slots in arms of 8T.

I keep switching between 3jjs and 1jj + an extra heatsink. No idea what's better in the grand scheme of things.

Alriiiiight then,

Time to get you guys some work.

The Situation
I am at the moment running a FLAME. I am farming money for my XL Engine. Until then, I have to compete with my 300Std Engine.

What I want
Hence, I want a FLAME Build with Std 300 Engine and with a maximum of 3 different weapon systems. Medium Lasers and Large Lasers are in this case considered as different. That means, I want to run that thing with 3 Weapon Groups.

A few more conditions:
Endo Steel and DHS are installed.
Don't put LBX on this build, it's too expensive.
I don't like LRMs.

I am very curious, guys!

Given your situation I would run this

http://mwo.smurfy-ne...dec838069e32960

If you don't want to burn the slots on FF in anticipation of the XL and more slot needs then leave FF off and just lower the leg armor to make it fit (makes leg armor 39 each slot I believe).

Put your LL in one group, and your mlas and ssrm in another. The ssrm only shoots when it has a lock so can be safely used in the same group as the mlas because they have the same range.

that's not competitive :D
i mean a build that can kill a stalker in a 1v1 fight.
4 large laser is the kind of loadout you put in a hunchback.

4LL + 2SRM6 is not even good enough, even though it's better than what you posted. not your build and not this one with the srm6 can survive the dakkajag's ac2 in big maps, Large Laser will never get to fire.

this is better:
http://mwo.smurfy-ne...64aed64276672b7

maybe switch the streaks for srm (if it were still any good) but at least it can shoot the ER LL in tourmaline or alpine before getting wrecked

edit:
this is as far as i could optimise
http://mwo.smurfy-ne...aacd4e00cdeb64d

like before
it can shoot 2 ERLL in big maps just by popping one arm out of cover, but forget about ER's at mid or close range. (use the pulses instead) - replaced those streaks for srm10 but maybe the streaks were best after all, against light mechs

also i did some tests and artemis is not needed at all, since the last patch they're in fact hurting the build because they don't spread wide enough to hit a moving light.

i tried this out, very low damage out put but it's a surgical mech, can steal the kills and weaken components at a distance, if you can hide

Honestly, you are about as well optimized as you are ever going to be on that thing without giving up the ERPPC.

My only suggestion would be to strip that pointless left arm bare, and put more onto the legs. Maybe even some head armour to keep the leg armour maxed. Losing an empty arm is trivial, and almost no one gets headcapped in a Spider, but getting legged usually means your have seconds left to live.

Couple of options. Flame is the best of the Dragons, arguably (although it is still a Dragon)

Slower Brawler: http://mwo.smurfy-ne...b97f94e2f89475a
I like this one because it's one of the unique things you can do with the Flame that you cannot with other Dragons.

Gotta Go Fast: http://mwo.smurfy-ne...94977c15b67ebea
If you really want that top speed, and considering the missile nerf, it's not a terrible idea. Although it is expensive.

Sniper Dragon: http://mwo.smurfy-ne...af99ee23ab4735e
This is actually a really good design we've seen Karian Empire using well. I will warn you that this is not at all an easy build to learn or master, but if you can get good with it, it can be very effective.

If you really want that speed, then yes it's about as good as it is going to get.

Here's the thing I don't like about this build -- the 360 STD engine is really, really expensive (tonnage-wise), compared to the 350 STD. You are paying 3.5 tons for about 1.8 kph. And it just seems a little low on firepower for an Atlas. But yes, it is well optimized.

Another consideration might be to do it as an Atlas RS:

or
