Started out with 2 ERPPCs (RT), 2 MLs (RA), 3 SRM6s with STD320 and 17 DHS. Obviously needs unlocks and time before I'd cast a vote on it - but so far so good. Equally suited for sniping and close quarters. Initial heat efficiency rating is horrendous, but it's not like you'll need to use the ERPPCs when you're up close.

Wow, nice mouse. I use the old G500. I can do 6 groups and an alpha.

So far Heavy Metal is my favorite despite the atrocious paint job. I am leveling a 733C and a 733P but haven't really been very successful using them. I want to run the 733P with 4xERPPC but I can't manage to do very well with it. My 733C has AC20, 3xSRM6, and 2 ML. I'm not setting the world on fire with it either. I don't know what I'm doing wrong because this is the first mech I have really struggled with besides the Dragon I bought for my daughter but then I just do not like Dragons. The only things Dragons are good for is looking pretty.

my 733c above is doing very well 2.2 k/d currently, alpha strike is pinpoint and massive 56 damage. LL and ac20 both have excellent mid range capabilities and 2x srm6's just add that xtra oomph.
If u focus 1 component/torso i find its a beast. only upgrades are endo and dhs.
The trick ive found is opening with an alpha then alternating the ac20 and LL burst until you can assure a ko with ac20/LL burst or alpha(as long as you can restart in peace).
Been thinking about the 733p as running a 4 LL srm build maybe with artemis. Im good with lasers and the pinpoint strike should be good, Large lasers are also excellent against lights which is why i favor them over ppc's.

Max armor (Legs at 61)
Gauss (4T)
LRM15(2T)
3 Med Las
2 SRM6 (2T)
2/3 JJ
STD 300 (54.0kph)
11 DHS
Endo
With speed tweak will almost hit 60kph, 1.2/33% cooling efficiency, and viable at all ranges, just need to get used to it.

I especially like those extra middle buttons: my problem with the side buttons is that they fowl my aim by moving the mouse a little bit when I press them. But those middle buttons would be fantastic.
Consequently, I just use left and right, plus q and e, though I almost always only have streaks and/or lrm's for those so it's not critical to aim/maneuver when pressing them.

732 - 1x Gauss, 3x ML, DHS, Endo, Std 300
733C - 1x AC/20, 2x LL, DHS, Endo, Std 325 (or 2x LPL, Std 300)
733P - 2x PPC, 2x LL, DHS, XL 300
I also use LRMs and SRMs, but I switch them around a lot trying to find a combination I like. I skipped the 733 since I'm not that fond of missiles.

My favorite regular highlander so far is the 732 with XL320, Gauss, 3 PPCs, and 3 JJs. I guess you can call it a poptart, but I don't really use it that way. It's a mid/long range fire support mech. Definitely a sniper though.

Using a similar build, i just added 3 SRM 6's , and dropped the engine to 300 XL. I will move to SRM 4 probably as grouping is tighter, and heat is a bit better. I find i really like the 3 SRM's even on the sniper highlander, as your not fast enough to really get away from anything, so far its worked out well, even if it is not super heat efficient.

3 ppcs on just 12 double heatsinks? sounds pretty damn hot.

300Std
Gauss
triple medium lasers
double SRM6
1 SSRM2
******* be like WWWWHHAAAAATTTT when I roll up with my crew and be all like zap zap bang bang good to go.
Some like it hot but I keep it cold as ice.
People want to play the alpha strike game. They aren't prepared for a flanking push with a speed and violence of action that puts the Israelis to shame.
Now I know what your thinking. "I want to be this bad but I don't know how."
Don't worry. I'll lay out an average situation using the 732.
First get on that web based automaton strife simulator. Don't worry I'll wait.
Ok. Get that mech. Put that **** on it. Hit that launch button. Don't meet up with friends. Your going to lose every friend you've ever made the second you land in a game. Run it solo. When you connect be sure to deride the other team. Question the repute of their parentage. They'll be stymied and accept the inevitable. Map your weapon groups by type to different buttons. If you set up an alpha strike button unplug your computer you just lost.
Once you're done disparaging the other team by telling them to check their privilege or whatever else the kids are hot to swing to the right. Zip an Atlas. Push through their soon to be chapped rear and slot an Awesome. Put down a K2 and lose half your mech. That **** don't matter you've still got a streak launcher. You'll be fine. A wise man once proclaimed his intention to do work and carry team on THIS VERY FORUM. His earnest yearnings were met with derision. This was their greatest folly. Punish this folly.
Arms be like fwoosh. Mechs be like boom. Accepting **** devastation is their only respite.
You just carried team.
You just did work.
Just make sure you have a life preserver for the inevitable flood if you live near a large concentration of ladies.

For my Heavy Metal I run 3 LL 1 Gauss. It's a simple effective build.

My 733C makes for a fun brawler. It's durable and vicious up close. 1 AC20 2 ML 3 SRM4

Finally my 733P makes for a healthy stand off fighter that works well in tandem with snipers or close range fighters. 4 LL 3 SRM4

Dude, there is no fun in brawling at present, you're lucky if you're even left with half a mech by the time you reach brawling range.

It's not been an issue for me. I'm going to probably publish some videos discussing sniping and the general meta of MWO soon.
