The light rifle does 3 damage.
I think they should just fix MG's.

Also, even if that wasn't an issue, 3 tons is still too much for a Spider to carry 4 of without sacrificing something or a Flea to carry 2 of them at all.

AC2 is 2 damage for 6 tons. AC5 is 5 damage for 8 tons. AC10 is 10 damage for 12 tons. Light Rifle is 3 damage for 3 tons. Doesn't look like a bad deal to me.

This. Light Rifles are ancient weapons in BattleTech, as in prespaceflight weapons. A light rifle wouldn't damage a modern day Abrams much less a BattleMech.
Point of fact: The light rifle is supposed to represent weapons like the main gun off the Abrams and Leopard. Those guns are just hilariously outclassed by battlemech armor.
This says something about mech machine guns...

Are you saying that the people that edit sarna make **** up?
Because from what I can tell, all the pages I've seen (including that light rifle one) has been sourced. If you choose to dig up the reference, you'll find that sitting in an official rulebook.
But... I think we're well past the point of: Hey guys, look at the rule books! Lets make the game literal to it!

Now I have some hard evidence for why MGs aren't anti-infantry only:
I'd like to see one of the MG-opponents argue against that.

well if it were only anti infantry. it'd get the -# like the rifle did.

Let's call it a modernized / upgraded Light Rifle then that can damage mechs. Anything to fill the gap and to not make lighter ballistic heavy mechs not so bad is fine, even if we need to twist a bit of reality / lore to get there. Light AC2/5/Rifle whichever makes the cut.

but we have machine guns that CAN damage mechs. just not in this game.

I really like your idea, but they would have to be some kind of upgraded version of the gun.
I also am in favor of the mortar idea too. (if not more)

No, the fact that it does 2 damage means that it is able to hurt mechs. That whole f*cking chart lists the standard damage of all of the weapons, which includes anti-armor.

Quintessential doesn't mean "elusively."

...and a lot more. Quintessential really means "the perfect example of." Tranlation: "The Machine Gun is the perfect example of an anti-infantry weapon."
Notice how that sentence doesn't say "cannot ever damage armor"? All it says is that the MG is the posterboy for anti-infantry. It is the baseline, the "measuring stick" if you will. If it couldn't damage armor, it would have a -3 damage rule like the Light Rifle, Medium Rifle, and Heavy Rifle do.
