heavies are still viable... no matter how you use them.
This is it. No one is saying you can't have a good game in a medium mech. But there are a lot of load outs that can cripple a medium mech in one salvo. This makes them undesirable to play. They also have much worse hard points than Heavy mechs (Yay, the Hunchback 4SP has symmetrical hardpoints! Just like EVERY Catapult....).
If this post was about Awesomes then people would chime in and say how wonderful they do in them. But look at the latest contest. The best Awesome scored like 2000 points less than every other Assault, and I know Bata and he played the hell out of his Awesomes for the contest. I can't wait until we have a medium contest so we can see how they score compared to an Assault. After all, without any weight limits, there is no reason not to go big.
If Medium mechs are so good, where is the threads complaining about them, like there was in CB about the Hunchback 4P?

If I get that kind of damage in a medium I'm super happy and I take a screenshot and brag about it on the forums. If I get that damage in my assault or heavy I think "not bad". And I don't even remember the game. Why is that?

While I do agree that mediums need some work, the notion that they should have the same damage output as an assault regularly is just silly. Assaults do more damage because they fit heavier weapons. The drawback is, of course, being a bigger target and moving more slowly...
As for why 600+ damage games in assaults for you come with apparently so much ease.. I'm going to guess your assault(s) are a poptart Highlander or Stalker with PPCs. Which exactly what this game doesn't need more of with medium mechs...

So instead we will post our shots or accounts about how our HBK, CND, TBT or CDA took top score in a match and thump our 52 armored chests. Because well, every winning experience with mediums makes up for all the times we bought it.
Besides any proper Hussar has more pride the sense.

So this proves that not only are medium mechs completely fine, but there is no problems with PPCs or jump snipers. Thank goodness you posted this informative screenshots to end all the debate and set the community at ease.

i always find all of these screen shots of "proof" entertaining. then they are steadliy ripped apart by anyone who thinks about it for more than a few seconds.
edit: cicadas are not a medium. they are an overweight light mech that got put in the wrong class.

1/10 times piloting a medium is like this

And currently that is why only the inexperienced or crazy motherhumpers pilot them.
Do we know we have inferior mounts? yes. Are we going to complain about it? probably not.
If anything I'd try to make some sort of change to the meta that encourages medium piloting over direct gameplay interference. Getting more players into mediums without directly buffing them will have the side effect of getting them used to higher levels of play, thus raising the overall skill level of the playerbase (or, if implemented improperly, will cause more people to give up... ehh.. suddenly this idea doesn't sound so good...)

The lights are always going to cap faster than you, and they are also better at general distraction purposes thanks to their common ecm(only medium with ecm is basically a big light). Mediums will never put out the firepower of a heavy.
But where I feel they are lacking an advantage that they really should have is in evasiveness. Lights have evasiveness in spades thanks to their 150km/h speed and extra small hitboxes.
But unfortunately pgi didn't seem to program the mediums to have any of that inherent evasiveness and they should have. Mediums goal isn't fat damage numbers. Meds goal should be to get flank shots on thinner armor.
But with the wonky, extra tall, and extra wide profiles many of them have they can't get to the flank without getting hit too much for their 1/3 extra armor over a light to handle. A 50ton medium is not that much tougher in overall armor than a 35t light, but it has 2-3x the size and a much poorer hitbox design. This leads to having to never use xl engines and having similar firepower to many lights to have any survivability.
The only medium with a half decent hitbox design the hunchback was made nearly as slow as a heavy. So again no real inherent evasiveness.
As a caveat medium is actually my favorite class. I don't want to go around capping I want to get in the fight and fight at a high speed. But I feel more useful to the team in anything else right now.
