the AC2 one sucks and the AC5 one sounds like someone banging an anvil.

I don´t like the new sounds at all. It actually sounds like a convolution reverb being implemented to simulate space, taking away a lot of lowend and thatfor a lot of bang, besides the overdone reverberation effect.
In the outside environment, there is hardly any noticable reverberation (especially in snowcovered landscapes) unless you are inside a hardsurfaced cave or something, though it doesn´t have to be realistic to sound good, simply because the sounds weren´t realistic before either but simply had that kind of deep intense feeling.

When firing an AC before the patch I could feel the lush punchy bass of a mighty weapon, now its merely something hollow. The PPC hurts in my ears, due to too much highmid frequencies, especially with that shreaking metallic style that´s been layered into the previous sound.

The new sounds, besides the decreased ability to hear where the shots come from, simply take away a lot of atmosphere and thatfor gaming experience, letting me having lost fun pretty fast after hearing them for the first time.

I see there are some people liking and some being very discontent about the new sounds. An option to choose between the previous and the new ones (including an on/off switch for that convolutionstyleroomeffect) would be the easiest way to fix this.

I was absolutely content how the sounds were, so I wonder why anyone felt the urge to change on them.

99% of the time when troubleshooting sound issues, it is never he speakers / headphones at fault. These are mechanical devices that simply drive air with magnets (drastic simplification).

The only time it is ever related to speakers / headphones is if volumes are too loud and create clipping or feedback. Or if the input exceeds the frequency response of the device (such as very low bass etc). In this game that is not likely to be the culprit.

In this instance it is 99% likely to be software related as it was introduced in a patch.

Therefore basic scientific theory is to gather the variables and look for commonality.

So no need to list headphones or speakers. What is relevant is items like the following:

What sound device do you use - Dedicated or Onboard? Creative or Realtek etc

Configuration - 5.1, 7.1, Stereo etc

Processing - Digital effects such as Dolby, EAX etc.

Software - Drivers? 64bit, 32bit? Operating system?

The key being to find something the people with issues have in common with each other, as this will tell PGI where it all went wrong. There are some items we have no control over such as software channels in the game, I'm hoping PGI can look at these in conjunction with any answers we give.

For my part I'm at work and don't want to use guesswork for my answers. I'll put up my details when I get home.

Dedicated sound card, Creative Sound Blaster Z
64Bit Win 7
Steelseries V2
No processing effect because they're stupid, and I have a sound card that does better.
Stereo configuration.

It's not my hardware or settings, it's just the game sound. AC/20's are just crunchy when you fire them.

Much like the Laser recharge sounds, they're tampering with sounds that don't need to be tapered with.
The single most best change they can do audibly is remove BBetty's bass levels. Her voice is very muddy. I've played with the voice files for a while and the sound a heck of a lot better when they're not so bassy. They sound like a perfect high-quality copy of MW2.

Well, I am indifferent to the new sounds, but am still puzzeled why haven't they done the PPC sounds like in MW:LL.

I mean, c'mon, those are pure perfection of sound effects on a gun that is supposedly man-made lightning.

... are absolutely bad. I want the old ones back. Reason: now it sounds like speakers in a metall canister, and it's more hard to hear out of what the direction a sound (and the enemy fire) comes.

I wonder if that has anything to do with the fact you are in a metal canister? >.<

The tin can noises, need to stop and the volume needs to be lowered a bit.. I prefer the older ones personally but I also suggest we stick to more boom, bang, wham SFX with some bass rather than sounds made using frying pans, aluminum pipes and throwing rocks on thin sheets of metal..

I feel like I'm piloting a mech made out of tin can...

I guess, they used "Stereo base widening" (don't know the exact english words for the effects).

It uses phase shifted signals from the same and the other stereo channel to make the sound sounds like it comes from a wider speaker area. Disadvantage of this technique: Sounds got louder and it is harder to locate the direction of a sound.

Yeah, more like "echoing" on top of "reverb" effects. I do not like them as well. They got too LOUD, more "Metallic" and "mixed-up" to the point of not being able to distinguish where the sounds are coming from. And as a user of a 5.1 surround system i can definetely tell you that the game DOES support 5.1 sound. Before the patch, i could easily distinguish by sound alone where the shots were coming from. Now its all mixed up somehow.

I used to plug in my audiophile headphones when I was using a mech with AC2s or AC5s... Now I unplug them.

Like many have said, the new AC sounds are too loud and too metallic/"tin can" like. They lack the force and oomph of the old sound, and just seem like they are a lower quality or something. Good headphones used to really flush out the detail in the sound effects and make them seem 10x cooler. Now they don't bring out any extra detail. All they do is accentuate the same "tinny" sound you hear with speakers.

I'm sorry to say that it seems like whoever changed the laser sounds effects a few months back to that annoying high pitched, whistiling sound is back at it with a vengeance. Hopefully PGI listen to us again this time, if not half the awesomeness of being in a Jaeger mech will be lost.

I could hear the kills from a Heavy Metal halfway across Tourmaline today. I think that was too far.

Well. the new sounds are undoubtedly too loud.... but at least they are still better than the clown whistle medium lasers we had a while ago.

Couldn't put it better myself. The relative volume is also messed up, if one has their volume high enough to hear the mech walking or the whirring sound they make when they turn, they are going to be deafened by the ACs.

I can't say the sounds were amazing, but they were pretty decent if not good. Why would anyone put them on a priority list for "fixing" when there's so many other matters to address ?

Nope, perfect.

I used to love the old MW2 days when you could hear the report of an AC20 across the map. You knew someone was having a bad day.

Most new sounds are better, some are worse than the old ones. A matter of personal preference, as with everything...
The AC/2 sound is pretty bad though... Firing that for a long time, you are about to get really annoyed with it.

AC sounds need a little bit more bass.

Missles a little tinny.

Otherwise great work.

Gauss Rifle still sounds like a spitball/peashooter. Some electromagnetic charge effects please.

The AC sounds pathetic - like you're shooting through a tin can or something.
