Battlemech - Kintaro

The paint scheme is that of the 1st Ghost Regiment.
"The standard paint scheme for the Ghost regiments begins with a base coat of gray so light that it appears almost white. Accenting is usually white or darker gray. The First Ghost accents it machines in dark green striping. In keeping with the yakuza tradition of tattooing the body as a record of personal honor, each MechWarrior may decorate his BattleMech with personal designs that describe his warrior history. All BattleMechs are painted with dark green dragon-like scales that run from the torso up over the right shoulder, around the back and then down the left leg in a continuous chain. This design symbolizes the First Ghost's devotion to the Dragon. The warrior's record of BattleMech kills appears as gold scales painted along the edge of the green."

I know, I know - light Mechs suck. No money and no use from them. But I'm kinda sucker for lost causes.

My brother thinks it is because they don't like using rounded surfaces.

Flea requires MASC, and high speeds have proven to be a serious issue for MWO to handle. Some of the current light mechs are already capped below the maximum speed they should be able to obtain under the engine cap rules (i.e. they can't mount engines as large as the rules say they should be able to based on their stock engines). Introducing a MASC light that would have its primary advantage cut off at the knees is pointless. I'm guessing when they announced it, they thought they would be able to have it fixed in time, but the speed cap still persists.

I've never mistaken a mech for another mech, so they're at least that distinct. They have a unifying style, which is to be expected since they all have the same concept artist. Honestly, I think they're doing a great job w/the mech designs (though I wish the Centurion would get another pass; the fact that it was one of the first mechs made for MWO shows). They capture the "feel" of the original Battletech art fairly well, while simultaneously making some of the designs that were pretty silly looking actually seem badass.
As far as the roundness, they're going for a look that is recognizable as "military," and angular armor plating is staple of modern tanks.
It might be nice if they could get a concept artist for each major mech manufacturer, so that each maker would have a style (a bit more realistic), but that's $$$.

Nobody likes using round surfaces. It is a pain in the *** for millitary to replace/fix up and it adds too many polygons to the mech model, resulting in overally worse quality (because they have to spare those polygons somewhere else).

Still they should try to make it less boxy for the units that are not inherently boxy. ;o
