I would just like to point out that this:

Posted Image

Is the image that everyone is saying is great compared to the concept sketch at the beginning of this post.

Seriously.

Really.

Would you want to be stomping around in that thing? It looks like someone was hungry and just started slapping down drawings of donuts. Or forgot to fill in some details while doing their initial composition. Alex's take is WAAAAAYYYYYY better and you're just remembering this mech as looking much cooler than it actually was.

Edit: The perspective alone is enough to make your eyes cross. Look at those missile tubes. LOOK AT THEM!!! Does the missile fire out at a right angle? What's going on with that medium laser? WHAT DID THEY DO TO ITS HIPS??

Champion (60 tons) is a weird one, same book as the Kintaro:

Posted Image

The Crockett (85 tons) kind of looks like a penguin:

Posted Image

I think the Hermes was avian, but my mind might be mis-remembering that one. The Hussar (30 tons) is kind of bird-like:

Posted Image

and just going down the line: Jackal, Mercury (kinda), Ostroc would be pure weirdness (maybe an ostrich?).

And the one four-legged mech that wasn't a Robotech knock-off: the Tarantula.

I've seen nobody saying they should do a 1:1 copy of the original artwork. That's only you going way hyperbole to prove that your love of lego mechs is the only correct one. All that has been said is that a Kintaro should have more rounded forms and that, since most released mechs of the past months look very similar and lack unique character, they should have taken the opportunity offered here to create something that is actually visually identifiable more than 150m out.

if you pick a jr designer for a huge work, certainly you'll have a bad product.

I don't think ANYONE wants the original one, I think what the issue is (for some, not me) is that its hardly recognizable as a Kintaro. If you had gone back prior to the announcement and shown the concept art on its own(with no hints) people would have been hard pressed to figure it out.

Then again not all Kintaro artwork was created equally to begin with:

The bigger issue however is that because its cheaper (In terms of in engine resources) to create flat sides instead of rounded shapes along a mech some mechs are taking on a distinct lego block look. (IE quickdraw)

Though im sure they will only avoid spherical aesthetics when its a more appealing approach, some mechs just NEED at least a illusion of roundness otherwise the clans arrival will look something like this

On the contrary, I've seen plenty of posts in the last 16 pages that have said exactly that, so that makes it less hyperbole and more reality.

I remembered the Kintaro as being much more sleek and cool-looking, too, but then I went and pulled my gradually dissolving copy of "Technical Readout 2750" from 1989 and was pretty shocked at the art. The stuff that Loose did was great, but something was definitely lost in the later books.

I think what Alex/PGI came up with was a pretty good rendition. It's aesthetic. It's opinion. My point is that the source material wasn't all that great to begin with.

Also: curves=polies and this is a MMOP. I don't want to see my framerates drop every time a lance of Kintaros shows up.

Not bad, glad to finally see a medium mech in the 55ton category.

Agreed, even if I have never been a fan of the build. It looks much tougher than the original.

I like how it looks - Something of a Zaku in there, and a bit Pacific Rim inspiration.

It's a 55 ton medium so I'll probably get it, but I don't think I'll be really happy with it before the JJ-equiped variant comes out.

I have seen nothing of the sort and I highly doubt you could link a single serious post stating that.

Oh come on now, this is probably the lamest excuse I have seen in the past 30 days. Are you telling me you get significant framerate drops when you see a bunch of Stalkers or Catapults? Will the next patch make the game look like minecraft because all those rolling hills kill your framerate? I wonder how all those MMORPGs with significantly more characters on a map than the 12v12 of MWO manage to not state "IBM roadrunner or higher" as their minimum requirement. The amount of additional polygons needed for round forms is completely negligible nowadays. The big advantage of straight forms lies in their simplicity for the 3D artists and the possibility to recycle them for other mechs with only slight changes.

The criticism I see again and again here is that nothing about this concept art says "This is a Kintaro". If you couldn't guess it from the stock weaponry, you would have no idea what mech this is. Neither the characteristic head nor even a hint of roundness remains. This is "generic block-mech X" not a Kintaro. This is as much as a crime as a Urbanmech with real arms, a head and a speed of 300kp/h or a six-legged Timberwolf without missiles would be.

after watching the video, i think alex (and the rest of the design crew) did a great job. Despite the Artwork - that looked awesome but a little generic - the 3D model looks pretty unique IMHO and it matches the medium class perfectly. Much much better than that tutu dancer from the past. thumbs up

After watching Golden Boy I foresee 3 builds. 5* LRM-5s of doom.
2: 3 MPL + 5 SRM-6s.
3: 2 ER PPCs + 5 Streaks.

Heh even in the hero mech videos quickdraws are getting legged! :) That aside, dosnt look like its oversized at least, about a hair taller than a centurion, posture kind of reminds me of a resized cataphract.

Please do not forget about the 3 LRM 10 (Artemis optional), with two small/medium pulse lasers.

The videos need to show more long range encounters before bringing it into a brawling range, where it shows the Kintaro nail a mech just before it moves behind an object then close the range on the other side of the object. The target mech could even be jumping over that object and the Kintaro starts nailing it while it is airborne.

They're kind of stuck on the light front. Speed is more or less what they do, and some of the current lights are already constrained there. I don't have much light familiarity, so this is a legitimate question but what light mechs are available for PGI to pick from that 1) have at least 3 variants w/sufficiently unique hardpoint layouts available in 3050, 2) are sufficiently different from the current lights in what they bring to the table, and 3) don't slam into the current speed cap?
To answer your question

How about a List of light mechs you have in the works, I would like to see some more lights as we have to many darn 65+ ton mechs on the field. So I made a list of all the light mechs that have 3 or more versions during 3050 except for the unseen/reseen. We have for 20 tons Hornet 151,152,171, Murcury 97,98,99, Thorn N,S,T. For 25 tons we have Mongoose 66,67,68. For 30 tons we have Firefly 4A,4B,4C, Hermes 1A,1S,3S, Hussar 200-D,300,350-D, Javelin 10F,10N,10P. The ever popular Urbanmech of R60,R60L,R63. Now the 35 ton mechs. Firestarter H,K,M,S, and the Panther 8Z,9R,10K.
