I'm actually enjoying the plastic minis more than the metal ones as I can just scoop them into the box without worrying about damaging them.

My plastic ones were ok, but the catapult did not look like a catapult. My only real gripe was that the poster was damaged beyond repair.

With a little TLC those plastics in the new box can hold their own against their metal brothers. (Yellow guys are mostly from the new box set)

As far as the Crab in other Houses or Merc units...hek yeah. Any mech could end up anywhere, just more likely to find them in Kurita or defending an HPG for ComStar.

WDs fought for and against (and kicked the crap out of) every spheroid house, it wouldn't be much of surprise to find any sort of mech in the formation prior to Outreach getting nuked.

Not sure if SLDF took any Crabs with them on the Exodus given that it was a late Star League design.

Dude what is up withnyour mechs? What a sight, were you doing an inventory?

Yeah, I landed another batch of mechs that I need to paint. Wanted to see where they would fit in.
Figured the best way to do that would be to line up those I had painted for each house.

Thats a nice collection youve got there man :) Think ive seen a picture of that on the web before though... Did you post it on warseer to by any chance?

Anyway the quality on the minis looks to be about what ive seen before. The minis look fairly nice, the biggest gripe I have with them are the thin arms and legs but that should be fairly easy to fix :D Some of the poses should be fairly easy to improve upon as well

Have you ever used a majority of your models at the same time? :D should have been one epic battle

You may have seen some of my Eldar over on Warser, but not this shot. You probably saw it in another thread here (show your collection or something like that).

Easiest fix for the starter box is to put a real hex base on them. Add the weight and makes them harder to tell from the real minis.
You can see I modded the Awesome by swapping the barrels making it a 9Q with the 4 PPCs.

Most minis I've had on the table for a Battletech game was probably about 50.

I got my starter set yesterday. All the mechs were in one piece but they really are not great quality. Some of them it's hard to tell what mech they are. Especially with some of the mechs being so similar already in appearance.

The Thor and Loki were really good though. They looked great.

It's a good place to start though, just need to get the rules down and convince someone to play with me now :D

Trim them a little with an exacto knife and try painting them. You will feel better about them then.

Nothing really..They are a little squashed and not a true Hex.
But putting them on a real base makes them heavier and more stable on the map / tabletop.

Thanks! Those are all the painted Inner Sphere Chassis. Have another 50 or so unpainted.
And I would guess about 125 Clan Mechs painted up as well.

Decades of collecting. Little at a time.

Loving the kinda desert-vibes on those starter minis you painted, RangerRob. ^^ At least someone's puttin' examples of how these can be done right.

Postin' my examples of the starterset minis after painting. Not claimin' to be a Golden Demon level painter nor intendin' to take too much stress, but hope these help to build confidence about the minis

Most people play with metal minis from Iron Wind. http://ironwindmetal...php?cPath=16_21 If you're going to dive into the TT game, you'll eventually take up the modeling and painting hobby. The minis in the Intro Box are truly just meant to get your appetite whetted. The Iron Winds stuff is the real deal, with details etc.

Welcome!

Like others I'm happy with the overall contents of the 25th Anniversary Ed. I'm also somewhat intrigued by the miniatures, that even though they are of low quality compared to the two premium mechs, they appear to be cast from the old Ral Partha molds.

By "old" I mean withdrawn from production due to wear and tear every mold suffers over time - which is no biggy really considering that for the cost of the starter your also getting a good base set of knock-about miniatures compared to what you'd pay if buying them in lead and from brand new castings (a lance of 4 pewter/lead mech figures usually sells for around $20.00 to $30.00 AU).

Overall, considering everything you get in the Starter Set it's pretty good value - even the sturdier cardstock maps are an improvement over the folded paper originals from 1984.

When this came out I wrote a review of the boxed set: BattleTech 25th Anniversary Boxed Game review

I basically thought it represented great value for money and that it was a great introduction or re-introduction to the game, just slightly let down by the quality of the majority of the miniatures.

Personally I would have preferred to have seen less miniatures if it meant they could have all been of the same quality of the two ‘premium’ Clan Mechs.

Interesting revieuw :) quality from the normal and premium minis does seem to vary a great deal. But then again making all thosem odels premium would probably cost an arm and a leg... Still very good value for a starter kit like everyone says :)

Ive just got a mail that the box is on the mail to me! Yay :D If MWO wont allow me Beta acces at least il have another way to get a little battletech fix :P

Now il just need to find an opponent to play

I think the best plastic mini's (besides the 2 premium mechs) to come in a box set were in City Tech 2nd edition. Fairly good detail and very solid designs, for the most part. Just mad that I no longer have all of them.

I'm glad Ranger Rob posted pics that show how good the box minis could potentialy look - BTW real nice job. For sure the 22 box minis are lower, poorer quality, but I think for anyone wanting to learn painting they offer a good opportunity. My son wanted to learn mini painting, so I've been replacing the figs in the box that we like with Iron Wind Metals. That way my sons been able to learn on the cheaper plastic box figs before he tackles the better lead ones. The 22 box figs may be poor, but I have no complaints about the quality of the other components. Easily the best intro boxset I've ever bought for any miniatures game.

Personally, I'd rather have had half (or less) the number of models if the quality was higher, but that may just be me...
