This is the biggest reason I'm happy about the Gauss nerf.
As things stood, the Gauss was so good that (UAC5 notwithstanding) there was little real reason to use other large ballistics. The AC20? Larger, less ammo per ton, VASTLY shorter range, much slower projectile, much hotter. It was a cool weapon, but in most cases the Gauss would do better for anyone (and could be mounted in many more places with fewer sacrifices). It's explosive nature rarely mattered much, as it only did 20 damage when it popped. A disadvantage up close, but not enough to make it ineffective as a brawling weapon. Because heat is the big factor in brawling (you need endurance!) the zero heat gauss rifle was too effective up close. With it packing a fire delay, it'll be pushed into sniping use only. The projectile speed increase will help a lot with that.
This opens up weapons like the AC20 and AC10 as better Ballistic options up close.
Good stuff.

Don't have access to my gaming rig right now, so I can't verify it, but from the sound of things, I tend to agree.
Guess I'm gonna have to say goodbye to my favourite Stalker-build of 3x ERPPC + 2/3 SSRMs now.
And why they would slow the projectile down other than to please the whiners, is beyond me. As someone already said: That's supposed to be artificial lightning coming out of that thing.

I can't wait to try the Orion out, it's been long overdue, and I have lots of CBills waiting to **** them out after purchase..
On the note of weapon changes, I don't really think it was necessary to bring PPC (and ER) heat levels up so high, and the gauss charge-up time will help cool down some of the cheese builds.

*PPC to 0 damage below 90m*
Was this really necessary??
Yes, Awesomes were very powerful and OP. Nerf Awesomes. LOL.
The Devs stick too close to TT unfortunately and they haven't even added the PPC Field Inhibitor likes it supposed to have. Min range is a horrible concept for a PPC in a real-time Mech game, imo.
The inclusion of the "protector" means I can make an actual copy of Kerenskies Mech, when they add in the Snub Nose PPC.

The Gauss Rifle was basically pre-nerfed. It's not a big deal now, but it will be a big deal in the future with more mechs added and 2 Gauss 2 PPCs or 3 Gauss monsters.
Great patch.

This patch just killed the (ER) PPC:
- Bump of base heat for both PPCs
- reduction of projectile speed
- PPC damage under 90m has been reduced to 0
You effectively reversed every buff for PPCs since closed beta
PPCs are back to closed beta levels aka. ERs are unusable and standard are actually even worse now with the removal of damage below 90m
The balance wasn't far off prior to this patch, a little buff for brawling and then sniping as well as brawling would have been equally viable.
Instead you decided to kill sniping and make brawling the way to play.
I don't understand why you are not aiming at making both playstyles viable at the same time. If you in fact did aim for that, then you failed horribly - again.
You don't hit a waepon system with 3 big nerfs in one patch guys, you just don't.
When people asked for more frequent game balance changes, gradual & small adjustments where meant, not the biggest sledgehammer you could possibly come up with.
some people will just **** and moan no matter what PGI does, I swear

Instead of just simply increasing the slot requirement for PPC/ER PPCs you guys are making ridiculous heat changes that are breaking the weapon. What about increasing the heat to LRMs? PGI, you are now taking away a long range counter weapon to LRMs... great job.
regular PPCs do 0 damage under 90m? They did {Scrap} for damage to begin with under 90m. Why the change? Seriously, what are you guys smoking over there? Decreased the speed of PPC/ER PPC and increasing the? Where is the physics in this? what is your guy's thought process? seriously? Did you ask members opinions or do you just simply not care?
Also... the Orion? Great job on nerfing the hell out of its stock weapons...
LAME.

Certain mechs ought to be rare...Call 'em legendary or something.Need a certain KD ratio or something light that for them to be available.
I would have prefered if the PPC stayed faster bolt than the Gauss, as a Particle stream is going to be faster. All in all, sounds promising, wait till trying it out before however.

Not too keen on the speed increases/decreases on the Guass and PPC nor am I too keen on the charging time for Guass when it should at the very least be PPCs. We will see how that all fairs and hope there is enough player feedback this time to remove it from Guass and impelment it on the PPCs.

yes - complain before you try it.
sniping will now no longer be the only and best way to dominate the game.
yes, all you ppc gauss boats can go cry now.
and i bet soon we will see " sniping is still OP..gaussPPC is still OP!"
maybe before anyone even tries the patch.
haha

Thumbs down, PGI, thumbs down.
First: I will keep an open mind.
Second, a lot of us prefer the change to gauss not ppc. There is no "the community" on making this change to ppc instead of gauss.
Third, the heat and min range and slower speed nerf the {Scrap} out of ppcs, so they hardly ignored ppcs.
Well, personally I use the gauss on 0 mechs without ppcs. I use ppcs on several mechs without a gauss. So I much prefer it on the gauss.
Because I fear it may make the gauss unusable for a mediocre twitch player like me. And better the gauss is ruined than the ppc!
But I need to try it first. The increased velocity may help. The truly competitive snipers might not be affected. A good sniper doesn't expose his guns for much longer than 1.25 seconds. It's the countersnipers that are screwed. Good luck reacting to a peekaboo when you are tying to advance. But it may be a net buff for the high end snipers who are good (not me).
I would rather have seen a 2 second longer cd on the gauss to make it truly crappier in a brawl. Even 3 seconds.
I am really worried they overnerfed ppcs.
Really worried. I wish they could do faster, smaller weekly balance passes.
That said, it will be interesting to see if the meta shifts.
Be nice to see ac 10s make a showing. But... uac 5s so good! I don't see how it can ever compete.
All in all a good patch.
I wish we weren't so in the dark about the future though- we have zero information of use on ui 2.0 (eta maybe this month?), community warfare (what on earth will it be like? I haven't the faintest idea. Maybe it just means free bobbleheads and paint. Which would suck).
