Stalker is not a terrible first choice, although slow mechs can usually be trouble for newer players. Hard to be in the right place at the right time, easily singled out by a more experienced light, and a big target.

Catapult K2, Cataphracts, and Shadowhawk are great first mechs.

Shadowhawks are cheaper and very flexible, although the medium queue is no longer the shortest queue which gives a little more weight to a good Heavy as a first buy instead.

Hunchbacks looks like they will be getting some great quirks on Nov 4th, although most of them still have a bad habit of putting too much firepower in a single torso location.

K2 is solid but you'll need 2 other Catapults to finish the skills, and the rest of the Cats(barring the Hero Jester) are missile-oriented which is a very different kind of mech. I do love my Catapult C1 though.

After the November 4th quirks the Hunchback may be better but at the moment Shadowhawks generally performs better. Hunchbacks are great though, but the hunch is always targeted and shot off first and you have nearly no weapons left. The Shadowhawk is more resilient. I started the game in the hunchbak when the AC20 speed was still decent enough to hit something at maximum range.

I agree with Redshift that starting in an assault is hard. It is always hard as they are even slower before receiving their upgrades you collect while playing and you are very much dependent on your team movements. I found that to be confusing at first; before you know it you are left behind. This will happen anyway in many games. :)

The Dire Wolf is a lofty goal, you'll have to put in a lot of work to get a Dire Wolf for C-bills.

Running a light mech with NARC, Tag, etc can be a good way to earn C-bills. Sticking with your team will help you to earn C-bills from the lance formation bonus and other bonuses, plus give you the opportunity it work with your team to get assists, savior kills, etc.

Premium time and Hero mechs are even better, since they multiply your C-bills. Keep you eyes open for Premium time prizes in this weekend's special event.

Heya,

when logging in I got a message that something was redeemed and that I should check my garage / wallet.
I cannot find anything new, is there a logfile to see what was redeemed?

If you just started to play MWO, then the first 25 matches will grant you "cadet bonus" that will be redeemed after a match.
You can check them on the Home tab ingame under Achivements.

If you play on this weekend, we have a halloween trick or treat event where you can win items (such as mechbay, MC, premium time, ammo, Cbills and gXP.
Check out the event and redeem your items for each match here: http://mwomercs.com/tournaments

Short answer: No
Long answer: No, really. No.
Very long answer: Some people do use joysticks to varying degrees of success. I believe the people with the most success are generally those who use their joystick for movement but still use the mouse for aiming. In general however, mouse is your most accurate tool.

Is the mechs have dead zones invulnerable for hits? I notice in some situations hits have no effect at all. Testing grounds is one of thousands examples. I shoot centurion with PPC to pelvic region but he'v no scratch. I shoot secont time at chest - and color became yellow.

Mechs should not have parts which are invulnerable, if you have a high ping it is quite possible for it to look like you hit but not have a hit register, you can always tell a shot has hit when the crosshares flashes red (I often see something that looked like it hit but did not register with an average ping of about 105 from the UK)

hitboxes do not always 100% match up with the model, several Mechs have larger hitboxes than the model, so on certain Mechs you can hit when it looks like you should not (e.g. the Spider has oversize leg hitboxes) but I am not aware with any that have smaller hitboxes

also if you shoot at a destroyed location only part of the damage transfers

in your example what could have happened is:

you were using a standard PPC within minimum range (the PPC does no damage inside 90m, the ERPPC and Clan ERPPC do not have minimum range)

because of your Mechs hardpoint location you could have missed despite the shot looking to be on target

the pelvis on most mechs is split between left, right and center torsos, so you could have already destroyed a side torso then shooting a PPC and hitting that torsos section with a PPC would only deal 5 damage to the Center Torso

if you were moving it is possible it missed but looked like it hit

I keep seeing PPFLD in conversations here. What does it mean?

Pin Point Front Loaded Damage. This means a weapon that does all of it's damage in one go, to one spot.

A gauss rifle does PPFLD but an ER large laser does not. IS PPC/ERPPC and IS ballsitics do this, both gauss rifles do, and clan ERPPC does most of it's damage s PPFLD plus additional splash damage.

Note: Most Clan weapons are less PPFLD than Inner Sphere.

in answer to that question yes and no, depends on the exact model and your playstyle
in general any more expensive mouse will be better than a cheep mouse but what makes a great mouse is down to persional preferance, things to look for may include:
buttons to adjust sensitivity (DPI) on mouse
weight
number and position of buttons
shape
sensitivaty range

one of my freinds once told me he had found the perfect mouse, and suggested I try it, I could not use it, way too sensitave buttons, but it was what he liked.

in future if you have another question please make a new post, editing your first post after it has been answered means people may miss it (as I did 3 times yesterday)

If you check the equipment (weapon) in the mechlab, it should show what is wrong with it.
It could be not enough money, slots, hardpoints, tonnage.

You need a weapon slot (energy/balistic/missil) where you can equip a weapon.
If you want to buy a new weapon for your mech, you need to unequip a weapon to have a slot (hard point) and enough tonnage and critical slots to equip the weapon (and buy it, if you don't own one).

You can not buy a weapon without equipping it to the mech and saving.

Also:
If you just started playing the game and you have no CBills, you can't buy stuff without the money.
Play a few games to earn more CBills.
