What is said below is subject to change.
A planet will need to be scouted before it can be attacked in the regular 12v12 (48v48) game mode. After being successfully scouted, it will become a contested planet where it can be attacked/defended.
It's referenced here in the Town Hall meeting with Russ from 4/16.

Defiantly high enough
Processor: AMD FX-4350 Quad 4.20 Ghz
Ram: 8 GB
64 bit OS
it only lets me run it on a 32 bit instead of 64 which idk why. I can run any game on ultra everything and the highest quality without problems. SO a bit confused here.

The 60MB are for the installer program which will then download the actual game. The game is a few GB, but I'm afraid I cannot tell you how much will be downloaded. The size of my own MWO folder is a bit less than 8GB, so this may be a rough indication.

As the other posters said, stick with the MC first and try a few of the trial mechs, search for guides.
But some quick ideas that come to mind
- In general the master bundles are regarded as very good value. You get a hero mech, a champion mech and a normal mech (you need three of the same chassis ("family") to fully level them), some premium time and some goodies. All for a severely reduced price. Personally I'd recommend the bundles for Stalkers (but they are slow), Firestarters (a light, fast but a bit more fragile), Hunchbacks (medium mech, very versatile but master of none), but YMMV
- mechbays ("character slots") are the only thing that cannot be bought with c-bills and selling a mech is mostly a bad idea, because their properties (quirks) tend to change currently, plus you only get a lot less back than you paid
- nowadays participating in one of the frequent challenges can also get you goodies like mechbays etc.
- you can buy hero mechs (preferably on sale), these are special variants which will increase your c-bill gain as others have mentioned
- premium time was mentioned already
- usually people recommend not to buy "normal" mechs for mc, because you can get them for c-bills. But if your time is limited (and you don't mind spending money) you can buy mechs for mc, just select which to buy: E.g. I bought the Jenner JR7-F(C) (the champion variant) because it comes pre-equipped with the very useful XL300 engine that can be used for many mechs. Otherwise you'd have to grind almost 5 million c-bills to get it. (most common XL engines are 300, 280, 255 as far as I see it)
- MC also buys you cosmetical stuff such as colours, camos and cockpit items
- Do NOT buy the C-bill packs from the ingame store! Buying the champion Cicada or Jenner for MC and selling everything is a better value (at least if they are on sale, maybe someone can confirm if also for the normal price but I think so)
- Most importantly: Check http://mwo.smurfy-net.de/ to get information like: stock mech loadouts, engine prices and weights and to "build" mechs in the mechlab without having to buy stuff.
- Check mechspecs.com to get other people's ideas on builds if you want to
- Metamechs has a guide regarding MC and C-Bills: http://metamechs.com...ng-c-bills-mwo/ (most of the site is targeted to players which are playing competively, so if, like me, you play to have fun, feel free to deviate from the builds, try what suits you best!)
most of all, have fun, and don't give up, this game has a steep learning curve!
2nd Edit: interesting discussion about bundles here:

MWO downloads about 7GB during the install, then there are patches about every 2 weeks, which could be anywhere between 50 MB and 2 GB

How do you deal and work around the weak feedback mwo is giving you in combat?
- For instance why can someone shoot my mech with a laser from an angle I can't see the beam say behind? The only warning i get half of the time is a little blinking down in the lower left right corner. The sound effect just doesn't seem to play most of the time, particularly in heavier combat. This has driven me absolutely up the walls with light mechs such as adder that orient around sticking with the group and not taking hits. The worst scenario i've had was been shot by a chain gauss shot. first one stripped the armor, my mech didn't shake nor any sort of damage sound did play and the second shot just blew the shoulder clean off. all happening in the space of about 1 and half seconds.
And while we're on the topic what's with the game's hit feedback. particularly on long ranges. A simple slowly colorchanging crosshair feels about as fufilling as drawing a dot with a pen.
I did install the game expecting mechporn what i got was pretty pictures with no feeling at all in the action. (I'm not saying add some obnoxious out of place call of duty splat though. but we have targetting computers, surely they could confirm a hit with audio aswell if we can't hear the armor crack and buckle from high energy weapons or the occasional golfcart those ac 20s fire.)
ps. Does gauss riffle have some sort of armor penetration mechanic that punches through armor to damage and crit the components behind that armor and then damage the back armor aswell? Taken a few gaus shots from the front that've dealt minimal/no damage to the armor facing the gun, damaging the component slightly but wrecked the armor facing away from the gun. Died to it twice or thrice when rear armor was stripped with something else before hand.

Go sit at Starbucks while the game downloads. Once installed, patches are much much smaller.

However, I notice that Chain fired ERPPCs do not register hits on the same target if fired quickly one after another. This suggests I need to basically group my shots in two.
How long is the delay before another shot registers?

how do you know the shots are not hitting? the cross hare is supposed to flash red on a hit but that only happens after the server confirms the hit, in my case I am usualy playing with about a 100ping so I see the flash about 0.1 of a second after the hit, people who live further from the server may have as much as a half second delay.
also are you playing over WiFi, I have found wireless to be less reliable than hardwired connections and it can cause lag and packet loss, the sort of things which could cause the problems you are complaining of.

I don't have this issue with IS PPCs; ER or otherwise. It's only been the CERPPC that this has come up; The crosshair not turning red after repeatedly splashing something with them in chain fire. I can't tell if they've been damaged through the paper doll, as the situation doesn't give me that time.
