Hey, Been playing almost a week now and my question is - Are the timberwolf quirks good or bad? I see it has the quirks +% to laser duration, and -% to engery cooldown. At first I assumed they were good quirks - adding duration to a laser would increase the overall damage done by an equal amount over the course of that laser while keeping DPS the same. And lowering cooldown on energy weapons would allow quicker follow up shots.

However, as I played more, I noticed a distinct color difference between good and bad quirks - these ones were in red. Could it be that the laser duration was extended and the total damage kept the same, thus lowering DPS? Is -% energy cooldown actually increasing the time between shots? The timberwolf is very laser-friendly and ballistic-poor loadout wise, why gimp a mech of 50% of its useable weapons? This is what is causing me to hesitate in changing by belief that they are negative traits despite being in red.

Thanks for clearing this up!

Yes the colors of the quirks mean that red = worse and green = better (from the default value of the chassis or weapon).
In the case of beam time, the damage is NOT increased. Only beam duration increases, so it needs longer to deal the full damage.

The reason behind Clan lasers using longer beams and the quirks on certain Clan mechs (or some of their Omni Pods) is that they are in general way more powerfull (more damage and range with less tonnage and space) so to balance the game, the Clans need to play "better" to use the full potential of the longer durations on Laser (and burstfire on UACs).

For me, I ignore anything below +/- 10% as this is not noticable if not stacked with other % (e.g. range/cooldown modules) :P

Question - I'm trying to get online from Steam but it's saying that the servers are going under maintenance, but it's been a few days. just wondering if this is actually a thing, or somethings wrong with my install

I can log in via steam without trouble, but take a look here:
http://mwomercs.com/...5-servers-down/

Seems like you aren't the only one with this problem.

(Please try to verify your steam installation first, maybe that will help for you)

They are negative quirks. The Timberwolf is one of the best mechs in the game, so it's had some nerfs to it. "Laser vomit" is especially potent which is why that was nerfed.

To explain. "Laser vomit" or "laser spam" is a configuration that uses the Timberwolf's ability to slap 7 C-ERMLs and melt other mechs to slag in a few shots within 5 seconds. so the Timberwolf has had some negative energy, and laser quirks slapped on it, to curb it's power. Make no mistake though, it is still ton for ton the best mech in the game.

However, that might change with the advent of the IIC clan battlemechs. I say might, not will, because it's still very hard to see those mechs dethroning the Timberwolf once they are quirked accordingly.

I bought one of the steam DLC packs. My account has the C-bills, but the mechs aren't there. What gives? Is there some kind of delay?

After you got to the homescreen on MWO ingame, you should recieve a window with items, that had been added to your account.
(Maybe there is a delay of some minutes). After that go to your Mech Select and have a look at the filters in the headline.
I think these 'Mechs are special ones, thus have a look at the button to filter for "special" 'Mechs. (Next to Heroes and Champions). Does this help?

I have seen reference in a few posts but wanted to see if you really can do this... have TS and ingame voip running at the same time?

I am quessing if yes, you just have your push-to-talk on different hot keys?
Seems this would be a good way to coordinate with you own personal group like say you were in group queue but still able to hear and chat in game with the rest of the team?

Possible?

yes, I play with both, TS to talk to unit mates, and in game VOIP to discuss the strategy with teammates not in the unit

Absolutly possible. You can run both without a problem. VoIP is by default on "Capslock", but can be changed in the settings.
My group is always together on TS, but when something of interest for others happens, one of us tells them via VoIP.

You can even put your TS on voice activation (thus it only sends when you are speaking) and make a TS-hotkey to mute you, on the same button as you are using ingame VoIP. Thus your mates on TS won't hear you two times.

Yea, thanks! I think it just took a few minutes.

I just installed the game yesterday, having fun. It's honestly a little better than I expected. I played the original MechWarrior on my 386 many moons ago. :-)

For now, I'm farming creds for modules, almost done. My question is, when I join community warfare, is there an option to select which region when we drop? like I pick Oceana, NA, or EU. 100ping vs 200+ ping is a big difference.

No, currectly all CW matches are played on NA-Servers.
(Maybe if the CW population will rise enough, it can be considered to provide regional servers).

Thanks Rogue and Raubwurst for confirming.
Love the TS voice active and mute/voip talk idea .. genius.

I don't like push to talk normally (I like voice active in my MMOs) but I find in MWO push to talk is really good for the more public in game chat to keep things 'professional' and just to mission calls.

Seems like TS can be a little more casual? I don't intend to ramble endlessly but wanted to get a feel for TS-acceptable usage. If more casual I'll probably do the voice active TS, mute TS/push to talk in game.

As always thanks!!

for in game VOIP it is best to keep chat to a minimum or you run the risk of annoying people, also refer to the code of conduct to make sure you are not saying anything against COC (mostly common sense stuff like no swearing and avoid racial/gender/religious/national insults)however for teamspeak whatever the host says goes, e.g. on my units teamspeak anything goes (except swearing because we have PG comms due to some young members and the fact that many members have young children who like to watch the game) while waiting for a match, or when playing casually but when a large group launches game starts and it is all business, otherwise planning, calling targets ect. would be near impossible.

Can mechs be destroyed permanently? I bought two with initial recruit bonuses, etc. Then I got two more by buying one of the steam DLC packs. I had four for a bit, but now I only have the two I bought via Steam. What happened to them?

No, except when you sell them.
Have a look at the filter, maybe you selected "special" only.
They have to be there... some where :)

No. There was consideration of this as a concept alongside repair and rearm but in the format MWO uses this isn't a good thing to try. And still no sign of repair and rearm since being removed 3+ years ago.... so safe bet it's gone for good.

Be aware that the mechs in the steam packs give one "Inner Sphere" and one "Clan" mech. There's a filter separating these in mech select.

Cool, thanks guys (it did end up being a filter thing - I had all three "Hero" "Champion" and "Special" selected. I didn't realize there was a 'normal' that wasn't any of those three).

I was actually really surprised that I got all my mechs back in perfect condition. I thought this would be like MW Mercs or what not where repairing and re-arming etc would be a part of the core mechanics. I gotta say, it makes the matches feel less intense than they would otherwise. Maybe having a casual queue that doesn't count (like the one we have now), and a more 'hard core' one where your mechs get damaged but the rewards are higher. Or maybe that could be part of the faction warfare stuff. I dunno.

Anyways, this game is fun so far. Thanks for the answers.

There used to be.
But the better you perform (damage, kills, assists, whatever) the more you get so if you wanna play "hard" mode in the quickplay queue you can push yourself to be the best on the team.
