Now that we have LFE, any reason to use STD at all? I get that XL is bad on Heavy/Assault (as they become extra frail) but I'm under the impression that losing both Side Torsos is about as likely as getting CT'd, so no real tradeoff. Am I missing something here?

If it is a hot or pure energy build, stick to standard engines. LF when the ST is destroyed will cut your cooling and max heat of your full strength by 20% on top of the heatsinks you lost which only compounds the loss of cooling and max heat.

So lets say you had (for simplicity's sake) 20 DHS. You have the 10 built into the engine and added 5 to the left and 5 to the right; where exactly doesn't matter. You lost the left side. So your full power max heat being 65 without quirks or skills (assuming manually added DHS is currently 1.5) and the cooling power being 3.5 heat/second... now it's 52 max heat and cooling at 2.8 heat/second... before we even factor the 5 heatsinks you just lost. So now it's 44.5 max heat and cooling at 2.05 heat/second... just because you lost a side torso.

This is a problem that doesn't exist with standard engines.
So the real question is why would you use an LFE? There's a huge tradeoff there that makes them very unappealing.

Edit: I forgot this is in addition to a 20% reduction in your top speed.

To fit LBX 20s or Heavy Gauss rifles, obviously. Less obviously, for other types of critical slot economy, such as fitting extra heat sinks. Essentially build specific reasons. I use a Standard Engine in my Marauder IIC D believe it or not, originally as an expense control measure, and more recently because it generally causes enemies to have to expend an additional attack or two to kill me, which is highly beneficial to my team.

So yeah, even for clans Standard is sometimes worth it.

Okay, from my understanding the PSR (Pilot Skill Rating) influences your matches in quick play, right? Like you are only supposed to be in matches with people who are either one higher, the same, or one lower than your rating?

Now if that is true.. that means that the people with "founder" titles in my matches somehow have yet to climb above rating 4 or 3 in all their years and are just being toxic because they can. Not because they are actually secretly rating 1, right? Well maybe they are with an alt account, but still...

You won't find any with alt accounts that still say founder.

Something to remember is there's somewhere around 22,000+ names registered on MWO that are active. That's not an exact number, mind you, it could be better or worse. What is important is that is not a lot. So at times... especially if it took more than a minute to find a match... they loosen the restrictions a bit.
Sometimes a lot.

So you can find yourself as a tier 5 in a match against a tier 2. The game will try to make up for this, of course, but the fact remains it does happen when it takes too long to find a match.

If it took 3 minutes to find a quickplay match, just automatically assume all the gloves are off.

But yes, some founders are still either "terrible"...

...or deliberately tanking their stats to keep in a fun range.

You just might see me sometime. I'm the guy running 88 ton Atlases and other such things and still having the misfortune of this ****.
Spoiler

I just wanna tank my stats and get back to tier 4... Posted Image
...Sigh.... just not having any luck because soon as I do, I'm back to tier 3 again.

Here's one from yesterday, second match of the day running 4 SRM-6s and 2 LRM-15s, and running 6 tons short 'cause I ran out of slots after boating some heatsinks.

After a few kills my toddler watching me play from my lap on the couch fell asleep in boredom... so I excused myself to put her to bed, came back to some little troll trying to kill me and quickly broke his legs.

Why would anyone run in 3rd person? Why is there no 3rd person in FP? This is purely from a curiosity standpoint, I was clicking through the forums this morning and I saw several derogatory references to people using 3rd person. The only time I've ever used it was when I was fooling around taking screenies.

3rd person was added into the game to help new players to see where their legs where in relation to their torso. (This was before the big white arrow on the ground option.) More advanced players abused 3rd person view for a while (till it was adjusted) to see over hills and obstructions. It's considered a "movement mode" more than a "combat mode", and as such most of the time those who use 3rd person view tends to be newer players and they also tend to do poorly in combat due to the camera.

In FP, it's considered hard mode. So as such being remembered, 3rd person view is considered for new players. As such, it was disabled in FP to make the game harder and "more immersive". This was in some part due to the player base asking for 3rd person to not be allowed in higher levels of play, which in this game is FP game modes.

About 3rd person view ...

I came into the game after the big white arrow was added on the minimap, so I never really used it to see where my legs are.

But I don't play much, tend to forget quickly what I know, and most of all I don't know the maps by heart, nor even the names of the FP maps ...

For me, 3rd view is mostly useful to see if my chassis (lots of new ones to test too) is in cover or not ... it's actually a hindrance when I move, and a nightmare when I fight (I finally learned to aim, and to use my arms and torso weapons separately).

As a big bad FP noob, not being able to "scope out" the maps in 3rd person mean that I get stuck in alleys, don't know where the covers are, stumble blindly in fire lanes and make a general nuisance of myself to my team ...

How can I train myself on those maps without having to actually go into a live match and be a ball-and-chain around the ankles of my side ?

When you're in mechbay, click "Testing grounds" on left side and select the map you want to use.

Horseman is close. You can get to the FP maps by the Testing Grounds, but it will be a left side tab on the home screen of the game client. You can walk around the maps as much as you like by yourself in the Testing Grounds.

Hi all,
I skilled the advanced zoom in the Sensors tree but I do not get the 4x Zoom in window when zooming in with standard key "v". What did I do wrong?`Have I missed something? Activated on a Hillbringer-Prime.

Thanks for helping!

Check the skill tree again, see if the nodes are active. You might have forgotten to click the "APPLY CHANGES" button, happens to all of us at some point.

There is a specific button for the Advanced Zoom feature. Make sure your are pressing the correct button for your keyboard configuration. The default is "V".

Otherwise, do as Horseman said and double check that you have the node unlocked and activated. It's really easy to "skill out a mech", then forget to save the changes. (Guilty of doing that here at least once.)

Thanks, I did not know that the advanced zoom has to be bind to a key...tought it relates to the normal zoom. Now it works once bound to a key.

Hello,

My google-fu is weak. Do we know in what order of location are ammo bins used?

eg: CT bins 1st, side torso bins 2nd, ...

Thanks in advance!

Also since it doesn't warrant a new thread in another sub forum - is a single SRM launcher worth the trouble? I have a Viper set up with a single A-SRM6 on one arm and a heavy small laser on the other with 4 ER smalls in the side torsos but I'm not sure if I should just swap that missile arm for something with more laser pointers

Larger SRMs are more efficient (in terms of damage per heat) than larger energy weapons. That armament seems pretty undergunned - and under range - for a 40 tonner, though.

What weapons actually do damage to the base on incursion? I just put over 400dmg of laser alpha into the radar node on incursion and it didn't effing die. (my alpha is 76, shot it 6 times) Is this a glitch or something?! honestly wtf

Was your reticle registering hits? If not then you may have been shooting at the wrong part of it

Were you shooting the tower, or the ground structure? The tower is indestructible, the ground structure is the only part that takes damage.
