This. Herding cats is a skill unto itself. even when the players are willing to listen, being successful at making quick decisions and having situational awareness with the limited info you have takes talent and practice.

I found it very useful to use TAG to lead fresh players.
They ignore voice commands sometimes but in general they do pay attention to the direction of my TAG.

I just reached Mercenary Rank 1 on Faction play yesterday. I wanted to change my title to my current faction rank but it is greyed out and can't be selected under the titles panel. Is it possible? I could have sworn I've seen others sporting their FP titles.

Any info on this would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!

Is it true that the max cap speed is reached after 4 people on a base? I heard that last night but I thought it always went faster the more people pile on.

Yes, I believe that's still in place and that number sounds right.

For anyone else in the same position as you were:
  • It will never show in-game. Mech bundles are normally only available through the cash shop ( https://mwomercs.com/store ), the in-game store is only for purchasing individual mechs with C-Bills and MC.
  • The specific page for bundles is https://mwomercs.com/store/bundles . Scroll a bit and you'll find the Mad Dog bundle.
EDIT: Small correction - some very old bundles are in the in-game store, but those are all from before the Clan Invasion and no new ones have been added since.

Hey, I've found mention of a rescale planned for late 2021. That rescale did not happen yet, right? (And is it going to be for immersion/volume reasons, or mostly for balance?)

Correct, it did not. PGI caused themselves an issue with the bolt-ons and their attachment points as I understand.
It's going to be for balance reasons as far as I know.

It was a "possibility" but it doesn't sound like we'll probably get it. I believe Mark Nicholson said recently that bolt-ons are not a game stopper on rescale. It sounds like a lot of work though and the animations would have to be rerigged and all that. If they have a resource available for a long enough time, I could see they might do a couple mechs, but the easiest and fastest way to mitigate bad hitboxes is quirks. Given the time investment, I think I'd rather see it put to other uses.

As a new player can one still reasonably compete with established players whose Mechs are kitted out with advanced electronics etc,.?

No, but not because their mechs are better than yours. If you fully upgrade and kit out your mech (which is really easy to do), it can be just as effective or outright clones of theirs. However, they probably know how to use it far better than you do, so good luck kiddo. Maybe ask them for lessons if you really wanna learn. Unfortunately, a lot also comes from experience. Good news is that there's plenty of joe schmoes for you to wreck.

If you want to know how to kit out your mech and skills effectively, go to mwo comp discord and ask around for help. https://discord.gg/xrdxmbWH

There is a grind to get a particular mech, but after your first 25 matches, you should have enough cbills to buy and equip many mechs in the game. On top of event rewards, it should be possible to match any build and fully skill it after a reasonable amount of time, depending on your performance. Premium time can help, if you win it in an event or purchase it (up to you) or if you get a Hero mech (again up to you). If you want suggestions once you've saved up some money, we'll be happy to offer advice on a solid mech to purchase and how to equip it. It's going to vary based on what kinds of weapons and playstyles you like. There's no objectively "best" mech or playstyle. There's a range of viable options depending on what you enjoy.
That said, the biggest challenge competing with them is experience, as already mentioned.

exactly. The big difference isn't the equipment on the mech (though that IS important), its that you don't know the maps yet... where to stand, where not to stand, when to move, when NOT to move, how to aim and lead shots, how to focus fire, how to roll damage, how to manage heat... These are all much more important than a lightly equipped mech.

So focus on all the first person shooter stuff first. Mech builds will come.

is hit registration in this game always so...random? Shoot a mech, damage shows up, shoot it again, and nothing happens, nothing at all.

There are 3 things that throw off hit reg. Either the target or the shooter has a terrible ping rate on their connection, or the target JUST started jumping, or the target just bumped over rough terrain and the game engine is dealing with the clipping involved.

A skilled pilot can exploit this. A fast mech will run up walls and over boulders to get that clipping effect and a jumpy mech can stutter the jump jets a lot, both allow for worse hit reg than normal. Bit of a ‘spoit, if you ask me, but perfectly legal.

You can max out a mech in a couple days of playing, the grind is mostly to get new mechs. The advantages an experienced player will have are mostly a) experience (duh) and B) more mechs to pick from.
As a new player, you begin in Tier 5, pretty much competing mostly against new players or irredeemably terrible ones. Trial mechs are not great, but once you finish your first 25 matches and get the whole Cadet Bonus you'll havel be enough to buy and outfit nearly any standard mech in the game (don't forget to complete the checkpoint race in the academy at gold rank, there's a C-Bill reward for that too).
