You are in the exact same situation as I was back in Summer 2020, returning Legendary Founder, played very little Beta, actually did not play MWO at all back then.

0. Did you get your 3x Loyalty Mechs gifted on/about 2012:
Centurion CN9-AH(L)
King Crab KGC-000(L)
Atlas AS7-S(L)

1. Noted your stable of 4x Legendary Founder mechs:
Atlas AS7-D(F) ==> Some folks are calling AS7-D the new "meta" for Atlas, for its mech quirks
Hunchback HBK-4G(F)
Catapult CPLT-C1(F)
Jenner JR7-D(F)

2. In view of the monthly free mech + CBills/MC rewards to grind for:

2a. These mechs are good enough for longer term playing as of Jan 2022:
Atlas AS7-D(F) ==> Ballistic + MRM, with some secondary energy weapons
Catapult CPLT-C1(F) ==> MRM or LRM+TAG, with some secondary energy weapons

2b. Marginal mechs still can be used:
HBK-4G(F) ==> everyone and their dog knows to shoot the ballistic RT (Right Torso)

2c. Avoid this:
Jenner JR7-D(F) ==> terrible hitboxes after mech rescale, weapon hardpoints anemic

3. Presume you also got your monthly free mechs x2:

4. Good news, you already have the mechs to do your monthly free mech grind!
Monthly free mech + CBills/MC grind sometimes have Ballistic / Energy / Missile damage goals, using:
Atlas AS7-D(F) or MAL-2P(S) or MAD-IIC-A(S) ==> Ballistic & Energy damage grinding is sufficient!
Catapult CPLT-C1(F) ==> Missile damage grinding is sufficient!

4a. I suspect that you would like Assault/Heavy mechs for their heavy weaponaary + staying power!
4b. Do you prefer ballistic, energy, or missile weapon?
~Currently it's longer range sniping with energy weapons or longer range ballistic (aka dakka) that's popular ("meta").

5. Suggest you level up your Atlas AS7-D(F), & Catapult CPLT-C1(F) first to get a feel for this newly revamped MWO.
And then consider to buy premium mech packages, or buying individual Hero mechs with your 20k MC.
The (Clan) Warden Booster Pack is the recent mech pack to get; already the best selling mech pack in MWO history!

6. New Player Packs (for both IS + Clan) are also a good way to get a feel for the game Hero mechs, and you also get lots of other stuff (Premium Time, GSP, MC, CBills, total 10% CBills bonus cockpit items)!

7. The exact advice for which mech to get, which weapon system to use, really depend on your preference of mechs (Assault/Heavy/Light/Medium)!
There are lots of very good Standard Variant mechs out there can be purchased for virtual CBills!
You will see lots of these good mechs while in Quick Play!
(KDK-3, DWF-C, TBR-BH, FNR-5, WHM-6R, ACW-1, PXH-1B or PXH-2, PIR-1 or PIR-2, FLE-17 or FLE-20,
MCII-B, etc.)

8. Or do what I did, just start buying premium Mech Packs outright to try things out!

0. I have not gotten any free mechs. I see the e-mails occasionally but have not logged in for years before now. I suppose I have missed out. Are their any codes that have not expired?

1. The atlas is pretty iconic and that appeals to me. I played alot of the clix game mechwarrior and always liked the jupiter mech. Has anything from that game made it into MWO?

2. so there is a free mech and other rewards as a reward for hitting goals every month? thats cool, I'll have to learn the older ones so I know a old timer when I see one.

3. my download is crawling so I'll be lucky to get a chance to play before the event ends. if it needs to load a patch after the main download I won't have time for a single match.

4. Good to know. I've got no problem finding time to grind. Do people cheat with aim bots or use other add ons? That sort of thing ruins a lot of games for me. Even if they are legal mods I find it takes away from the fun. Maybe using the legal ones from the start is the way to go if they are needed to break even with everyone else? does everyone use teamspeak or some such?

5. I'll probably take that advice. Staying power sounds good. I don't mind losing but don't want to let my team down. I like to scout/kite the enemy in some games but I'll have to see how it goes.

6. Is clan jade falcon represented in MWO? they were lots of fun in the clix game but I quit playing the old school battletech before the clans showed up.

7. I like trickery and fooling the enemy into underestimating me so I'll have to find something that helps with that.

8. I spend like a sailor on shoreleave with my time but and very prudent with my money. I'll probably have to be careful with my purchases.

...you can still get the Standard Variant MAL-2P & MAD-IIC-A with virtual CBills anyways.
MAL-2P is my favorite MWO mech, so I'm very happy about MAD-2P(S)

You can change your Avatar logos by going into MWO game client:

a) Inside MWO game itself:

b ) You can also go into FP (Faction Play) to choose your House/Clan Loyalty (You see my Wolf Clan loyalty avatar):

You can change your House/Clan Loyalty without penalty nowadays!

c) Clan Jade Falcon is indeed represented in Faction Play!

Yeah, there are regular monthly events. Often you can win a 'Mech as a reward.

The November challenge offered the Cauldron-Born, excellent Clan heavy OmniMech that can support all kinds of loadouts.

On top of the 'Mech, PGI added three colours, a cool livery pattern, Premium Time (i.e. ), GSPs, a pair of cool decals and .

You did not even have to pay for 'Mech Bay.

Check this page: HOLIDAY BONUS EVENT

Play at least one game with Match Score of 50 points, then go to that web page and click "Redeem". You will get two Assault 'Mechs for free .. and other good stuff. You have 29 hours until the event ends.

In my experience, aimbots and similar cheats are very very rare in MWO.

You can have Clan Jade Falcon forums avatar and you can have CJF userbar. But other than that, factions have no importance in MWO. Really, it is just a cosmetical thing. Being Clan or Inner Sphere matters only in the Community Warfare, and even there you can switch between Clan and IS side in one minute.

You have got four solid 'Mechs in your inventory. If you can claim that those Holiday 'Mechs, you will get another two solid 'Mechs. Wait with spending your money until you can be reasonably sure that you will not spend on some foolish stuff.

It may sounds dumb at first, but: how to use PROPERLY the consumables?

I generally know how those work but I wonder how could I use them the best way. I won a trolling amount during 2021's lootbag events and now want to use them in FP (where there is no place for errors, that end the whole question)...

There are many different kinds of consumables:

• Artillery Strike / Air Strike - Drop them on the enemy team. Artillery Strike shells cover circular area, Air Strike bombs fall in a line.
  
• Advanced UAV - Launch it in the air above your 'Mech to find out what 'Mechs are in your vicinity.
  
• Cool Shot - Use it to cool down your 'Mech.

Those monthly free mechs have only been a thing since last year; if you want to go spotting old-timers, there are certain (L)oyalty and (S)pecial variants of existing chassis that are no longer available (the regular version still is, but the shiny one is not)

Okay let's do this properly:

Airstrike: for hitting mechs behind cover. Usually used to soften up attackers queuing at the gates, or, when attacking to hit defenders hiding for a peek. If someone loves a certain spot to poke from, punish 'em for it.

Artillery: Area denial. Drop it on a push to stall 'em or just get your money's worth. Honestly splitting a push'll be the more effective use than if the enemy tromps through it, at least if your team can take advantage of it.

Both: Just remember if someone pops a uav you can drop an arty/air strike on it.

Speaking of which...

Uavs: Sometimes you just don't wanna face check for the enemy team. Useful for checking a gate or just as a backup for your 'scout' mech when you go to troll the enemy team with hit n' run distractions. A mech shooting down your uav isn't shooting you so pop and run if you're ahead of the team and run into the enemy.

Cool shot: This is for the brawl, for the push, and for that extra kill before you fall. You're gonna get overrun run sometime. The cool shot is so you can go down swinging. In a slow steady hide n poke you can sit back and cool off. Just let your teammates trade out some armour and take your turn doing the same trying to win the trading game. But sometimes, sometimes folk just wanna smash some mechs and get it over with. Whether you're pushing in or getting pushed in, a cool shot let's you get that extra shot in before you pop from heat or damage.

Air Strike - drop it minimum 16 m away from your mech, if possible just behind enemy mech/s,
Arty/Air Strike - least damage right at the smoke

UAV - I launch it if attacked close range or if I am about to die to signal my team about the enemy position

1. Err... it seems that one cannot 'gift' the Clan New Player Pack to someone else unfortunately...
(I did comment last year about the same regarding the IS New Player Pack on MWO forums, but to no avail).

Ye, Daeron ain't answering to my DMs for quite some time though. Assume he is too busy in that regard. For those in sympathy with new mech packs being giftable => DIM him via Discord or E-Mail too to push that issue up on the bulletin board please. Thanks!

I just had a look at FP after a VEEERY long time... Did they remove the scouting mode or am I just too blind to see it?

It was mostly removed with the rework of FP in 2019. It is now a possible game mode within an ongoing conflict, but it is mostly vanished.
