Unless a mech has specific quirks or qualities, I try to stick to smaller launchers. SRM 4 for example has a tighter spread than SRM 6. Lrm 5 has the tightest spread of the lrm launchers. Lots of larger launchers are where you need to start looking into artemis to help close your spread.
I will point out that, now, larger launchers have reduced spread. Smaller launchers (such as the LRM5) are still lower, but even an LRM20 has decent spread now. However, you need to consider reloading times for larger launchers now. The larger the launcher, the longer it takes to reload.
I'd also like to point out, from my personal experience and no other evidence, that firing multiple smaller launchers does increase their spread, but less than if a launcher of that many were shot in it's place. Example: Shooting an SRM2 and SRM4 together still appears to have less spread than a single SRM6. However, shooting those SRM2s and SRM4s will result in a spread slightly larger than if each were fired separately. (Tested with an Atlas build rather recently. I settled on 4 SRM4s instead of 3 SRM6s, due to spread. The 6's had much larger spread, and a lot more than just an extra SRM2 spread being added in.)
I think the spread increase is added together, but on a more linear scale than out right adding together. Thus, two LRM5s still have less spread than an LRM10, but only marginally better. Two LRM10s have have marginally better spread than a single LRM20.
The real advantage here is the ability to chain fire the multiple launchers, typically tonnage saved, faster reload times, better spread (marginally if fired together), harder to crit out two launchers than one. But, it comes at the cost of extra heat generated, and the possibility of Ghost heat being applied. And, if one just chain fires the missiles, you also lose out on single alpha damage, which can sometimes come in handy when only one volley will hit your target.
I'll have to do some testing on that spread mechanic, seen as it has changed. All I know is, my Atlas likes to Alpha it's 4 SRM4s and LBx10... and rip apart other mechs at close range... (But it didn't like 3 SRM6s on another Atlas pattern, because the spread was so huge.)
