Thanks for the heads up on this. A restructure sounds good at this point. And will probably help out here.

Hello my fellow MechWarriors,

When preparing the next patch, we found that the Object.pak file was about to exceed the 2GB size limit on a tool we use.

With all the new content coming in future patches, we needed a better way to package it all.
To prevent this issue happening again we moved files from the Object.pak file to their own unique PAK file. This means users will see a big patch this week because we have to patch the Object.pak file and patch/add the new PAK files. As a result, the next patch will be approximately 1.3GB.

We are sorry for the trouble of the increased patch size this week; However, this should be a one-time thing.
For the inconvenience, on patch day: We will be issuing all players that have logged in after August 19th, 2013 with one (1) day of Premium Time.

I think looking at the Objects file,

merge "Default", "Characters" with "Purchasable" and then creating a "Purchasable Item .pak"
merge "Mechs" "Pilot" and "Effects" "Weapons" into a "mech.pak"
merge "Editor", and "Gamemodes" into an "Editor.pak"

if possible... or just get a new tool that allows for more than 2gigs worth of .pak file...

This is awesome, thank you. The 1 day premium time is great - the communication of the what and why in addition to recognition of the inconvenience, no matter how small, is even better.

Thank you.

Thank you for your forewarning on patch sizes as well as the extra premium time. This is exactly the kind of action that will restore faith within the community and instill some good brand loyalty.

Thanks! Communication is what wins wars. Nice heads up ! Looking forward to it. The game has gotten much better overall, though I am a longtime fan of the series. Keep up the great work !

I for once support and endorse this kind of communication with the community! It was prior to the issue, thought out, and informative in a truthful way! Very nice!

Just curious, but how will this change effect my performance? I finally have my machine pushing 15 fps without modifying anything outside of the user.cfg, so I need to know if I'm going to potentially gain or lose frames.

Thanks!

I don't mind at all when a big patch is created by lots of new content.

The day of Premium Time is icing on the cake.

I guess I missed the part about lots of new content in this patch, oh wait there is not a lot of new content now, they are just prepping in case one day there might be...

Niko didn't say there would be many things in the patch, it's just a restructure of the filesystem. If you look at your Objects.pak as it is now, it's near 2GB anyways. At the very minimum we're getting the hitbox changes for the Awesome, Atlas, Orion and Spider.

Maybe they'll surprise us with something else, who knows.

Add that to a music-video of bikini-clad girls shaking their huge patches.

After reading Paul Inouye's Hitbox post about Mechs in Thongs, I so did not need this image seared into my HUD. ;)

To clarify: The Premium Time is only available for players who logged in to the game client over the past 3 months. Players who have been inactive since August 19th will not receive the one day of Premium Time.

To clarify: to those players who accepted Russ' non-apology and continued to play the game, have a free day of premium time.

If you're worried about the upgrade using all your data, run the update on another computer where data isn't an issue, then copy the directory to your main cpu via usb. I've done this while working off 4g connections.

Here's to hoping I wont have to randomly reinstall the entire game every other patch.
