What do you mean about hardware of the computer, ect? I always figured the point of a virtual box (along with testing applications in a "safe" environment) was to be a sort of bridge between older technology and modern-day hardware.

Ah, I see. I've heard of people running software out of virtual boxes for testing and such, but I suppose that mostly applies when people are working with software that will run out of CPU and RAM without need for dedicated memory support. Still, if your CPU cache will cover the amount of dedicated memory for an app, couldn't you still run it in VMware?

Pledged $40.

Their forums aren't working though... which is worrying.

Is access available now or is it when the counter goes down? I am reading things wrong or getting conflicting information.

Game looks awesome so far though.

The forums are going through rebuilding and restructuring now- in the past MekTek was mostly about MechWarrior. Now that they aren't allowed to do MechWarrior anymore they're removing that part of their forums and setting things up to be more user friendly for HGA players.

The counter on the mektek page is the countdown for Alpha access (the $40 pledge unlocks Alpha access when it ends). I'm super psyched for it, I have a lot of faith in MekTek and they've worked really hard for this community for a really long time.

Ok cool, thanks for clearing that up. I was confused by the language they used talking about Alpha.

Looking forward to this one! Looks like fun. Got a few friends already keen as well.

Well after reluctantly backing away from this when they first launched their kickstarter campaign I've just gone back to pledge. Though MW2:Mercs was my first PC mech game, Heavy Gear was the first one which I remember well. Hoping these guys some good luck!

What's the difference between "North" and "South" in HG:A?

North and South are two different factions in the HG universe. Politically, you can consider the North as a NATO-type faction while the South is more like the Eastern Bloc. Northern gears are role-specific, while Southern gears are typically designed to be more jack-of-all-trades

Well I made the plunge and bought the Northern Veteran digital pack for $60 which seemed like the best bang for your buck. You get 75$ in game currency, a Tiger Heavy Strike gear instead of the basic old Hunter, a stocked arsenal to go along with Alpha/Beta access, plus some other digital goods like soundtracks and artwork. They also have Southern Veteran digital pack which offers the Sidewinder instead.

I remember the Black Mamba being the all around badass but MWO has made me hesitant to spend anything more than the standard price of a game.

I had honestly thought this project dead and gone since I had not seen anything change on it in two years. It's good to see the possibility of Heavy Gear alive again. I used to play ridiculous amounts of hours on the original.

Two different blocks of power.

Basically, the main factions are the North, South, Peace River (the best, home of Paxton Arms and the dead ones... at least at some point in the timeline) and CEF.

Both North and South are a group of factions running under the same banner and the ones who call the shots on Terra Nova.
North is more of a coalition, while the South is more akin to a confederacy (which is funny considering it's the North that calls itself a confederacy).

North has the religious guys, the wealthy merchants, army and the poors. Their gears are the angular ones.
South has the army/big guy (think USSR), a bit less wealthy merchants, kingdoms and something akin to Clans, but bent on technology and utopia, instead of warfare... and utopia. Their gears are the round ones.
Peace River (was)is the most influential state in th Badlands, which is the nothing between the heavily populated poles where the main factions reside. They use mixed tech of both sides, plus Paxton equipment.
CEF... Earth wants Terra Nova back... failed once, came for a second round... If you know Starsiege Blood Eagles, they're kinda like that, except before secession.

Hey that cartoon is great, if HGA can capture the spirit of VOTOMS it'll be awesome personally I'm hoping it'll be close to Gundam too as I wish a Western Dev could make a gundam team based shooter.

Any option to upgrade your account /pledge? It looks like its only possible to buy an additional "pack" without upgrade

Not that I've seen, so I bit the bullet and went in at the $90 tier with a Black Mamba, sounds like a cool gear.

I did the same thing, rather throw money at HG at this point anyway.

You wont regret it. The Black Mamba was one of the best all around gears available in the original Heavy Gear. I went with the $60 Northern Veteran digital pack and got the Tiger.
