Scout.
I prefer to dodge, dip, duck, dive, and dodge while keeping good sensor data coming in for the rest of the lance than just putting warheads on foreheads.

I'm also planning on going with the command tree first.

However - I half expect the Scout to be the first tree, and you must gain X experience before you can buy Att/Def skills, and so on for Command. I'm not even sure if I would dislike this.

For now i'm most interested in catapult mech, and with that goes scout better than rest, but any tree seems viable for it.

Scout knowing where targets are is of amazing importance to strategic game play and makes it less likely for me to wander into a bad fight.

I don't like running very much that's why I don't want to learn Scout tree, besides it's so boring to command. I'll learn Atk/Def

I'll be going down the command tree, but as I don't know how viable/smart it is to go down that route with the Catapult I don't know.

I just kind of like the idea of being fire support and giving out useful information to my team with commands.

I think this.

1) there will be a lot of bad commanders to start with. And a lot of good brawlers to start with.
2) many bad commanders will migrate to brawlers.
2) many scouts who realize they can't run around assault mechs and kill them will migrate to brawlers.
3) many good brawlers will migrate to scouts and commanders.

The lure to be the baddest dude on the field is too tempting for good players to not start there initially. The lure to be the "leader" of the battlefield or the fastest mech is too tempting for many who will soon realize they aren't cut out for or more importantly, don't enjoy those jobs.

But I could be totally wrong.

is see this happen all the time when introducing people to strategic role games

Man, I hope they've overhauled those skill trees since initial publication. They look like Star Wars Galaxies paths.

I want to try all of them, but I'll probably start Attack/Defend, then Command.

Likely Scout. I would have hped ther emight be an atk/def skill to allow for counter-battery fire for catapult drivers. Since there isn't, i'd go scout and work dword IDF AOE reduction to help the IDF mechs land more birds on-target.

I think that the atk/def will be more useful for myself until I get the proper feel for the game, then I'll branch out from there.

I'm probably going to go scout. Being practising my running and jinking in MW4, and being a 35 ton ninja is awesome jenner!

After 300 or so votes, it looks like an average company of 12 mechs would go about as follows:

Lance 1: Attack
-Commander
-3 x Attack

Lance 2: Defence
-Commander
-3 x Defence

Lance 3: Recon
-4 x Scout

...with Lances 1 and 2 somewhat interchangeable in roles

Scout first. The idea of running around locating the enemy sounds like some fun and a good challenge. Plus, and since I do not know much about the maps, I think being a scout first will give me the chance to learn the map layouts and any nooks and cranies faster.

I'm going scout, but I'll probably take a detour for some of the vision modes in the attack/defense tree.

So, are you under the impression that if you can dodge a wrench, you can dodge an AC/20?

As for myself, I'll be going Scout with some Atk/Def vision modes thrown in.

looking at the trees recalls to my mind the BT card game more than anything. almost everything on the tree was a card and I remember the joy of a great stack being executed.
Watching a good team play this game will be a thing of beauty in time, me thinks.
All the right people in the right places at the right time, using exactly the right stuff.......

And in open games I think you will see at least some people use the scouting tree skills to sit in the back until they can rush in and cherry pick your kills.

If it is going to be this specialized they would either have to list it next to the persons name or restrict the amount per game. I know this is more of a simulation, but in many games, relaying enemy locations is automatic, as long as they are in communication range. Having a specialty in order to do this seems awkward to me.
