Ya complaining about artillery and airstrikes falls on deaf ears. They are part of the game, and available to everyone for C-Bills. Get over it and use them, instead of stubbornly trying to be non-comformists... I used both as they were valuable in assists, getting kills, and boosting damage points as well. It would be ignorant and foolish not to use them on the idea that they are "pay to win" or whatever the cool kids are saying about the consumables now-a-days.

Great way to not be hit by them is not fall into herd-camp mentality. If you camp next to the dropship on Frozen city, I WILL arty you and laugh as I see my cursor turn sold red for 4 seconds.

Interestingly, despite equipping and using both artillery and air strikes for every match I played, I still made enough c-bills to buy two extra seismic modules (12 million) for my Shadow hawks and end the tournament with more money than I begun with.

So how many games do you think you played?
How about you Eglar, how many games did you get in for the tourny?

You would have to be mental to not see the value in equipping one of each to boost your score. My best strike flat out killed two Mechs in a group of 5 who I ran into by accident but didn't get into LOS of :P
I saw the value (so I guess I wasn't mental) but I just didn't want to spend all those CBills on every match. Once I realised that's what I had to do to get higher in the Top 100, I just ''opted out'' and went back to having fun with my team.

BTW I'm not criticising anyone who chose to make the investment. It's your spacebux to spend as they see fit. I was just a bit disappointed that the tournament ''required'' consumable use to get the highest scores, rather than focusing on Mech vs Mech skills.

I was actually trying all sorts of new builds during the tournament as I got more and more desperate. It was only in the last hour that I gave in and started playing the HBK-4P.

All in all, it was a hectic, but fun weekend.

I was running the 4J mostly, and only break out the 4P when I die early in a match and know the match was going badly for my team where I quit the match early.

the extra module slot help quite a bit i think

I only had 3 games over 1000 during the tournament. My best game was a win, surviving, 1274 damage with 6 kills and 5 assists. Sunday at 2:57a.m. EST I launched and got a match at 3 a.m. EST and put up 1125 damage with 4 kills and 6 assists with a win and survived... it did not count... PGI MM trolled me there at the end haha. It was a hell of a grind though, as PUGgin is excruciatingly painful.

So where is this list of winners and when do I get my free Mechbay?!

Nice to see myself there, that match also went toward one of my top 10 for the tournament. I remember telling you that must have boost your ranking big time :P

Honestly, they aren't even that bad of a money sink. The extra damage and component destructions you get from those bring in enough spacebux to make the investment barely significant. You won't lose money even if you lose the matches. This is with premium time of course, haven't tried without.

Fair enough. I expect I'd still end up ahead in CBills in most matches.

In fact, a month ago I used to bring Arty to every match. But then I realised I had started to use it as a crutch, and decided to focus more on my basic piloting/targeting skills instead of magic sky strikes.

My damage scores probably suffered a bit. But my pride in a good game increased a bit too, LOL.

Great weekend of play.. Started late and was playing like a sack of old socks due to rusty-ness, but put in a good session yesterday and made it to top 100 for the chassis.

Tourneys like this are great for breaking up the usual play, and now i'm a few million c-bills richer (even using arty and airstrike almost every match) and have Griffins ground out.

I honestly couldn't tell you for sure. I usually spectate games after I die to see what happens, but that wasn't the case with the tournament, since dying would invalidate a game's score. The result is that I played in far more games than I usually would. I did notice my total k/d ratio actually move up by 0.03, and I have thousands of games played so that's a lot of carnage. I would hazard a guess that I got in close to 100-120 games, and played for about 14-16 hours.

I saw a lot of different play styles during the tournament, and if you want to get by without them then all the more power to you. I did enjoy how little the traditional meta-game meant over the weekend though, and part of that was the never ending barrage of shells and bombs being directed at anything that even *thought* about hunkering down for a good ol' snipefest.

26 for the heavies played most of them on saturday and 2 last ones on sunday after I woke up stopped because you fail to find a match so many times.

Far more for SDHs I think it was well over 80 I played for them. Wanted to start Blackjacks because I was fairly sure I could hit at least top 5 on the last day but those guys on the SDH Leaderboard made me break a sweat. Friday was SDH only.

It's funny that I originally wanted to do assaults instead of heavies because my first try ended with 3 failed to find a match in a row i was like "f**k that" and went for heavies - I the aftermath I am glad i did.

Anyways I think proton and Schoppenhauer got the least games for holding that score for it's really hard to get games and Proton played like what? 10 Hours on the last day? Schoppen even less.

Congrats Eg. I watched you tear it up in a game on Sunday, as I slipped from #1 Cicada to #4. Very impressed by your skills, you are a beast.

Congratulations to all the leaderboard placers and winners, I saw many of you on the field as I tried to break out of the basement in the light category, you are all champs.

Even had the pleasure of being TK'd by one of Tfun's artillery strikes Sunday night.

Having nuked an unfortunate teammate (or two?) myself on my bleary eyed warpath means I deserved it.

Players are still going to naturally fall into rank around their particular skill bracket - but yeah endurance plays a big part in trying to move up through the folks in close proximity, whether we're talking top 10 or bottom.

No reason to dismiss the results out of hand just because of that...

At best, an arty strike is going to add 10-15 points to your match score, 100-150 points to your tourney score. And you really want to begrudge someone 10-15 points that they earned by making a camper move his arse?

I think you underestimate the damage, assists, and kills that an arty + air combo accumulate every match. I'd estimate that arty + air benefited the tournament leaderboard by an average of 250 points (1 arty + 1 air = 1 assists + 0.25 kills + 150 dmg * 10 matches).

TBH, you aren't going to shift far up the rankings once you have played your 10 placement games. I hit 20th place after my first 10 games and ended up 11th. You do of course get those "lucky" games, but how much of that is "luck" and how much of it is having the skill to exploit a sudden weakness in the opposing team?

Good players will find a means to win no matter what the rules are. If PGI made only your first 10 or 20 games count, you'd still see a very similar spread of players on the top 10 scoreboard.

FWIW I never used arty or air. I did use coolant for the first time.

Having witnessed the skill of some of the leaders, to me no amount of justification mitigates their skill.

This type of tourny doesnt reward skill it rewards grinding, simply put if you play enough games you are bound to get lucky, its all about quantity not quality. Still congrats to the top players, your stamina is undeniable.

Launch module will bring player run tournaments with other formats. Then we can see if folks complain about those because they have no chance to improve their results after borking up all their allotted matches!

Depends on the Kintaro I ran at the time, I know that when I was in my LRM GB some gave me crap until I did over 800 and 4 kills with it. but the streak freak has an XL whis does not matter as 90% of the time players try and leg it anyway.

I am fully aware of how skillful you and the leaders are and am not diminishing the accomplishment. I am also fully aware of how effective arty and air are at dealing damage, assists, and the occasional kill which are the focus of the award system. Everyone who played without arty or air gave up points compared to those who did plain and simple.
