I don't really feel like these new variants add very much but options are always nice.

DRG-1C with a large XL, ASRM4, 4ML and your pick of the litter for AC with plenty of armor and lots of ammo/heatsinks.
TDR-5SS with 2 (ER)LL, 5 ML and cranked with heatsinks. Surprised me when it actually worked on Terra Therma.
Edit: Late night posting after reading all of the Dragon and Thud hate. I will admit that the Thud is average at best and the CT on the dragon prevents it from being a standup fighter making it the world's largest light mech, but I've found success in the past with those two. They have a special place in my heart as they are.

both SHDs have a lot of potential. And yeah, that extra energy slot means a LOT on the 2D. Plus the 2K can use it's hitboxes and sell those arms. Not as good against light opponents, but should let it brawl above it's weight nicely.

The real tragedy is the lack of CN9-AH.
Now that there's a precedent for adding overlooked variants back in, I'm going to clamor for the AH until I run out of fingers to type with.

normal.
This is a fact.
But there is something to be said for doing well in under rated mechs, it raises the bar and gets people to think outside of the meta.
I keep comming back to the Tbolt for it's toughness, agility and weapon blends.
Right now I am favoring the 9SE, specifically this build: http://mwo.smurfy-ne...3f6923a666a6a68
With the improved way SRM's act, and it's not perfect yet but improved this little monster is doing far more damage than I've given it credit it for. Easily pushing 700-800 dmg a match and finishing the match fully operational with 30% hp left.
As long as you are a dead eye with the lasers you can punish people.

Devs wasting their time again? Oh never mind, Mech department is the only department working. Can we get better gameplay soon? You know like this one: "Adhering to the key design pillars of Mech Warfare, Information Warfare, Role Warfare and Community Warfare, MechWarrior Online adds several new layers of gameplay and tactical team planning to the franchise."
link to quote.

Keep ECM away from my Tbolts... I don't every wannabe mechjock swarming over to my special mech... yeah, I know, I'm weird. I even like that one support LRM on the adorable assymmetrical *******.

We need a heavy - for example the TDR-7SE simple for the reason to show the people that PGI is not affraid of the ECM-Monster they created.
As long as they deny to bring a new Mech with ECM - i can't loose the feeling that there is something about ECM...that will drive everybody nuts

I would think the Dragon or the Orion. But T-bolt isn't a bad choice either.

Jump Sniping isn't a problem and ECM isn't a problem - so how could a Mech that could do both become a problem?
