OP? Do you not realize that the more specific the request is for the match maker, the less of a pool there is to draw from?
If you opt out of premades for pug only, you generate two SEPARATE pools for the matchmaker,
One that is Pugs and premades mixed.
One that is Pugs only.
When you open up a choice, you pull people from the mixed pool and put them in the pug only, that leaves less pugs in the mixed pool and those who are pugs in the mixed pool face premades more often. Pugs in the mix pool get fed up because they’re facing more premades, and then the opt out. Eventually that snow ball effect and migration of pug players makes it a requirement that if you are pugging, you need to select pug only mode otherwise you basically get steam rolled or team killed because you aren’t part of a team, and thus you are encouraged to just use pug only.
You’re not only creating longer wait times for mixed pugs, but you will do the same for pug only matches. Matches become increasingly unbalanced, increased likelihood of failed joins, and etc.
Do people actually put any sort of thought behind their suggestions? They’re mostly just one-off personal preferences. “My idea is perfect when I think about it like this so that’s how it should be because I know I’ll like it more”. When you suggest stuff like that without considering the entire community and how things will play out, you are basically wasting everyone’s time.
But let’s play devils advocate here:
Pug Only Guy: “but MoonUnitBeta, why not just make the default join filter include both pools, that way the people who don’t care who they fight will be matched where they are needed!”
MoonUnitBeta: “So you’re telling me that in order for your bad idea to work so you have to freedom to do what you want, you want another bad idea to make up for it? Regardless if people are default being matched to either pool, you are still separating the pools. The fault is that you are relying on other players to make up for what you want, and depend on those players not to pick a side. You really think that the majority of people just aren’t going to pick one? Especially if they suspect that picking one will award better fairness, more fun, etc? If they see those benefits by choosing pug only, they will choose pug only. When you open up that choice, you can’t control it. If you try to control it, you waste time managing a failing system and you start pissing people off.”
