Arty unlimited range is an issue. Placing them with high precision over 2000km makes it an easy long range engagement tool.
Nevertheless, i dont think working that angle is a good solver.
Much better would be to increase the time until the strike hits. increasing time to 10 seconds would do alot and make Arty into an area denial weapon. Make it enough time to walk out of the strike but not pass through a strike area with 60kph.
Should be something like 10+-2. Also the time until impact could be randomised a bit.

With that mechanic you can't really use arty anymore for precise strikes. Instead deny area access for a short while. Anything that still mvoes in gets hit hard. For that reason i would NOT reduce damage.

My issue with your idea is that artillery, by design and intended purpose, is more than just an area denial weapon. Cluster bombs and mines are more suitable for that purpose.

If you want a 10 second delay then the marker should be much harder to see. If you do not like the unlimited range, require TAG.

Had a guy in my group this weekend running a Hunchie with Small Pulse Lasers...was an old carry over from way back in the day, nostalgia drop for him.

Anyway, in addition to the Pulse Lasers, he has a TAG and a pair of Flamers.

Welp, his Hunch was blasted off by a couple well placed Meta shots in the first 30 seconds of engagement on Tourmaline.

Left him with a Flamer and TAG.

He ended up doing 600 damage at the end of the match.

Anyone want to guess how?

So he was able to get 15 out of 20 hits from Arty/Airstrike? Was he playing against Team AFK? Otherwise I would go ahead and give this guys some sort of medal.

They have been OP since they were buffed. It is pretty common knowledge to anyone with experience using them or having them used against you en masse.

Heck even Jo Mal has called them an easy button. You know something is OP, when he thinks it is OP (He just doesn't have a problem with something being OP).

And frankly, neither do I. Remember, we are playing a game set in a futuristic dystopian society constantly waging brutal war that has killed billions using giant waking machines of death. Fairness and balance are the last things on my mind. :D

Then you remember you are playing a game. Which in order to be successful as a pvp game must be balanced.

Also thank you for agreeing that they are overpowered.

He's a really smart player. Who placed it in a reall good spot. I'm not saying the other team was some kind of amazingness, but we were definitely playing in a higher ELO that day, due to the names I was running into.

But it took no real "effort" on his part. It was just see an opportunity, and press a button for his super module.

He dropped artillery on an overconfident murder ball? He deserves a commendation in my book.

I didn't say they were OP. IF I died more than twice to them I might start respecting them. I have suggested some thing that would make them feel more sim!

2 deaths to a system others call OP makes me thinks thou whine to much. :D

You called them an easy button (I told you I would remember in the next arty thread). An easy button gives more benefit than the effort / trade-off required. That is the definition of OP in a video game.

And it isn't just about deaths. It is about a single button click that can drop the HP of heavy a mech 30%.

I have cleared Arty in a 53 KpH Atlas. Depends on where your are in relation to the smoke and how fast you react to it. It hurts but it is a weapon that is meant to hurt.

Except it's not really a weapon.. it's a module... and as such weighs nothing, balanced currently to do more dmg than anything.

I have to agree with the OP. There is a place for it, but pgi hasn't found it yet.

Similar thread from about 2 months ago mirrors the bewildered sentiments in this thread.

That's actually absolutely fantastic! I don't want MWO to be an eSport!

I don't think you'll have to worry about that.

Did I say "Easy Button"? Or just say easy to use? Link me to the quote Please. As much as I post I cannot remember everything I say! Or why I may have said it. :D

Only if you want it to be an eSport. I prefer brutal, desperate, and gut wrenching multi-player game play, just like the dystopian society it is set in.

I did not say it's overpowered. I said I don't have a problem with something people consider overpowered. The difference is so subtle it is so easy to miss. :D

It's called "artillery", not a "beautiful fireworks display". Don't call something "artillery" and then deny it its potential.

Besides, people have been endlessly complaining about Meta-whoring poptarts, LRM rain from "cowards" hiding behind cover, and unstoppable murder balls. And so I have Charlie, dishing out death and destruction up close and personal, to show them the way:

It's a module that does aoe damage. That's it, it isn't good for anything else. I know some people really want to belive that it does something tatical, but it doesn't because it doesn't blanket enough area to cause mechs to be actually dislodged or scattered, but mechs don't move fast enough with the limited warning to make it cover a larger area. You can argue about this till you're blue in the face, but it isn't tatical at all, just a module that causes aoe damage.

It could be useful if it were smoke, heat, emp or even a movement limiter of some kind, but again it's just a module that does aoe damage, nothing more.

Oh you mean the Alpha Strike button on some of those pop tarters or Boom Jagers,

Yeah, easy mode is right.

Nerf that rubbish, no more one shot kills at all.

But if we have one form of "easy button" as it is apparently labelled now, having another don't matter.

Has nothing to do with being an "e-sport", it is called being a fun game with an accurate skill curve. Besides that, PGI makes balance patches, so by your definition of balancing a game only for being an e-sport. Than PGI is trying to make it into an e-sport and you better go ahead and jump ship now.

It apparently mattered enough for PGI to nerf the highlander to the ground.

Thank you. A snarky answer to a fun jab... But I did say it in proper context. So you are going to hold me to a one time statement. Cool. I guess I am just that dang good that an Easy mode weapon doesn't scare me at all when Its in my matches. And everyone else wants it Nerfed!

Plain and simple its easy to use and easy to avoid, if you are watching your surroundings. I got hit with 3 Art strikes in 2 games during the Tbolt weekend... No deaths. Easy to use, easy to survive. :D

Wait, WHAT??? Can Highlanders not pop tart anymore? What about Victors?? No jump jets?? ShadowHawks? Phracts? Boom Jagers?

Is all FLD pin point & shoot Alphas stripping 30% + armour (or even coring some mechs in one shot) is gone from the game???

Or is this tomorrows patch?

If you just want to be purposefully ignorant or simply hyperbolic that is fine. But pretending you are making a valid point is ridiculous.

My statement is 30% of a heavy mech. My CTF runs 376 armor. It takes 178 damage to = 30% of my life or 6 alphas. Now either make an honest statement for the purpose of furthering the discussion, or keep trolling. I don't give a shit.

I deserve several then. It's not hard - it's really not. If the other team isn't scattered all over the map catching two or three mechs who are moderately close together and they all take splash damage from several rounds... that's par for the course. Sure, if someone can't manage to hit even 2 mechs with an arty/airstrike it's not that bad - the problem though is that anyone who's that bad at deploying it probably can't be trusted to butter their own bread either.

Mechs have to concentrate to focus fire or to push. Or do you only play matches where both sides split up and poptart/LRM each other?

I'm all for Arty being dangerous and deadly. I'm just saying bring it into range with the other modules. That's it. Currently it's absolutely not; it's the pre-heat nerf ERPPC of the module world. Anyone who isn't bringing one is just gimping themselves.

I love the people who try and argue that being unbalanced is somehow a feature rather than a bug.
