I woke up this morning and actually hated myself. I hate to admit it, but I am now officially more interested in Star Citizen than Mechwarrior:Online. And here is why.
I'll try not to make a WALL OF TEXT® [edit: failed]
Mechwarrior:Online-
Here are the good parts:
1. Launch is almost here. Star Citizen will take more than a YEAR after the MW:O launch before it's probably even Open Beta.
2. I have loved Battletech for 25 years. I loved Wing Commander yeah, but 18 years ago I would have MARRIED Mechwarrior 2 if it was legal in my state.
3. Community Warfare will be finally revealed.
4. Mechs designs are mostly fantastic, but scale on 1/2 of them is WHACK. We could assume this is for balancing issues, but devs are completely MUM on this issue.
5. More maps, more mechs, esp PROJECT PHOENIX, coming soon. Hell ya.
6. Clans will come, I will kill them all.
Here are the bad parts:
1. Poor weapon balance due to PINPOINT ALPHA STRIKE. Yes, it's an FPS sim but devs did not handle going from RNG hit table to point and click. Armor needs doubled again, or do not allow for 100% convergence. TT or not, BASIC rule balance has been broken from the start.
2. Poorly implemented HEAT TABLE, ie. no real penalties. Use the TT heat table, and weapon boating issue would be fixed.
3. Maps are "good" but really don't even impress me as much as the old MW2 ones did. New Canyon is a step in the right direction, but you are using CRYENGINE 3 for god's sake. One of the BEST outdoor renderers out there. Why do all your maps look like something out of....well, a game? Serious as hell here. The world is not just made of 14 shade of grey or brown. War is dirty and gritty yeah, but the worlds we are crushing under our feet should be gorgeous. Stop emulating Battlefield 3.
Here are the sad parts:
1. My Merc unit already has over [Redacted] Star Citizen ships between us. Including the rare [Redacted]
2. I have already spent twice as much on Star Citizen than Mechwarrior:Online and I've been playing MW:O almost every night for the past year.
3. Star Citizen is looking at a 2015 release. TWO YEARS away and I already know potentially more about their combat, economy, PVP, PVE and MMO features that Mechwarrior:Online Community Warfare which will be out in just over two months. I understand the power of surprise, presentation and timing...but we are MOSTLY adult gamers here. We don't cater to that s*** anymore.
4. Communication (see above) - Or lack there of. When PGI first started posting about MW:O it was like nirvana. The early dev blogs were welcome, warm fireside chats that looked to be the begining of an open, transparent and constant relationship with the developers. That didn't last long. I understand time contraints when trying to finish the product but you guys have DROPPED the BALL. Facebook? Twitter? Ha. What a joke. Again. If you are trying to get new, young faces into Mechwarrior, more power to you. But, I may only speak for myself, but I'm 46. I don't tweet and I don't Face. What do I do? I read and participate in forums. I engage those within my game circle to deepen those bonds to them and the game. And I spend ALL of my discretionary/mad money those games.
Basically what I feel for Star Citizen is like James Earl Jones from Field of Dreams. (paraphrased of course)
Ray. People will come, Ray. They'll come to Star Citizen for reasons they can't even fathom. They'll turn up your games not knowing for sure why they're doing it. They'll arrive at your server as innocent as children, longing for the past. "Of course, we won't mind if you look around", you'll say, "It's only $20 per person". They'll pass over the money without even thinking about it: for it is money they have and peace they lack. And they'll walk out to the hangers; sit in flightsuits on a perfect afternoon. They'll find they have reserved seats somewhere in one of the fighters, where they sat when they were children and cheered their heroes. And they'll play the game and it'll be as if they dipped themselves in magic waters. The memories will be so thick they'll have to brush them away from their faces. People will come Ray. The one constant through all the years, Ray, has been immersive computer games. America has rolled by like an army of steamrollers. It has been erased like a blackboard, rebuilt and erased again. But social gaming has marked the time. This simulation, this game: it's a part of our past, Ray. It reminds us of all that once was good and that could be again. Oh...people will come Ray. People will most definitely come
PGI. I'm submitting this to you. People want dynamic economies. People want PVE. People want MMO/RPG elements. If you build it.....they will come.
