Ok I agree "bullies" is a bit harsh. I use that word because MWO is a closed environment unique to other typical FPS games where a "bullied" player has no avenue of retreat such as custom servers or solo content. MWO draws upon the same pool of players so bullies know they have a captive audience.
The real bullies are the ones trying to bully PGI by exploiting "bad game designs" they protested against since the beginning. Now they're jealous PGI is listening to the casuals over them, when before PGI wasn't listening to anyone.
Well, OK, I'm not saying all competitive players are angels, either. Some of them are probably jerks. But then again you can find jerks in almost any group of people. But I also get the vibe from a large portion of the competitive players that they are decent folks who do want a balanced game. There are weapons that they think should be nerfed, even though they are using those weapons themselves. I've seen McGral suggest that PPC cycle time be increased to 5 or 6 seconds to reduce its DPS compared to brawling weapons.
And I certainly don't think of Roland as a jerk, and when he doesn't use LBX, I don't feel like he's "exploiting" bad game design. It's more like he's.... side-stepping bad game design and not equipping what he feels is a sub-par weapon. But he'd *love* to see LBX do 14 damage per shot and just *shred* things up close. It's not Roland's fault that the LBX hasn't been buffed.
You see what I mean? PGI is the one we have to nail to the wall to get changes. We shouldn't be yelling at each other. I think we all want the same goal, a balanced game. In the end, the better players are still gonna kick my ass even in a perfectly-balanced game. The point of game balance is not to shrink the skill gap. The point of game balance is to make a variety of tactics and builds all viable, depending on situation. If anything, a well-balanced game with lots of complexity and nuances can actually increase the skill gap, by introducing counter-plays.
