You Can Either Play The Game Or Shoot Lrm's

You can play 2 lrm mechs and watch the game at the same time.

Maybe I'm just lucky, or maybe it's my play-style to move from cover to cover, but I have very little problem with them. I've even gone back to not using AMS on my builds.

I tried to use an LRM boat last night while pugging and it was a complete waste of a mech slot.My team could not retain a target long enough for me to even lock on never mind actually hit anything. And if I tried to venture out and use a TAG anf get my targets directly the volume of return fire made it suicidal to try.
So I dropped the LRMs and went back to direct fire and that very first match after I removed all the LRMs off my mech the enemy had at least 4 mechs with at least 30 tubes TAG and NARC plenty of ECM and my team consisted of some experts in the technique of hiding under a rock. All of my team was poking out of cover to get shot in the face repeating if neccissary (sometimes they don't get killed on the first go at it) Frustrating me because my mech was a close range brawler and as we all know closing into brawling range of 12 enemy mechs alone is just as suicidal as playing hidey peeky until the enemy has a 4 kill lead.
LRMs are garbage in PUG matches and not even worth taking as a solo player. However fighting against PUGs with a co-ordinated team with dedicated TAG and NARC support you're very effective.
So LRMS are worthless junk if you are a solo player since you can not count on any "team mate" to assist in holding targets.
LRMs are great against PUGs if you are in a premade of 4 with NARC and TAG support
LRMs are back to being trash in 12 v 12 because all those guys know how to use cover ECM AMS and that new radar deprivation module.
Essentially LRMs are only good against solo players and only then if you use a team to spot.
Well at least it's like that when I play.

With the TBW being so popular and many of them totin' LRMs they are basicly everywhere. It's just a good way to rack up MechExp. The constant stream rather than the dense volley of cLRM give them an extra boost in annoyance as well.

I ran out of AMS ammo halfway through the match. The amount of missiles going around is getting ridiculous.

LRMs are only OP when you're an idiot.

Change that to "LRM boats".
Take a few launchers with a mixed loadout of other weapons and LRMs work fine.
Sometimes the other team goes full turtle mode, and your LRMs don't reach anyone.
That's why you brought other weapons, and it also means your team's LRMs dictated their positioning and movement.
Oh, and counting on others to hold locks is the major mistake most "LRM boats" make IMO.
Always be focused on getting your own locks, your damage will skyrocket.
Use IDF sparingly, it's a bonus for when your team can and do hold locks - expecting it is just being silly. I don't expect anyone to give me line of sight for my direct fire weapons, no reason to expect them to hunt down locks for me either.
Good rule of thumb, you want something done then do it yourself.

Now, LRM users fall into two categories - the fire n' forget crowd, and the tactical fire support crowd. TheFnF crowd is the least dangerous with this weapon. They will lock on anything they can, at any range, and just click the mouse. They often don't even wait to see if they register hits on the paper doll, they either move on to another target or just spam more blindly. These users rarely ever hit anything, and burn through their ammo within the first few minutes of the game. If they do manage to actually hit, let alone kill someone, then that person was likely doing something extremely stupid like standing in the open (and ignoring countless warning systems). The threat level against someone like this is low, and unfortunately make up the large chunk of the LRM spectrum.
The inverse of this is the tactical fire support crowd. This is the spectrum I fall into. These users know long range weaponry and how to deploy it. They know the map layouts, and can tell just from radar sigs where someone is (in terms of cover). They also know the flight path and speed of their angry bees. To top it off, these users tend to be highly mobile and will constantly jockey for a better firing solution. Unlike their FnF friends, they aren't 900m out firing from the same spot all day long -- they're dancing 250m from the action, constantly keeping that sweet 180m distance as they send bees over the hill. *THESE* are the people you need to be afraid of. They will pin you down, they will soften up your entire lance, they will coordinate volleys with their brawler mates. In essence, they use the weapon like it should be used.
I am a big fan of LRM's, both in lore and in the game. These days I can be found driving an LRM60/4CERMlas Timber Wolf to great effect. She dances at 250m, and with TAG, will put a steady stream of blue bees right down your throat (along with those tasty MLAS). I've been yelled at a few times, and even told that LRM dmg shouldn't even be counted in totals, all because those people got utterly wrecked by them. They made mistakes, they made assumptions based on the vast amount of FnF crowds they have faced and they got cocky. What amazes me is that these dame people who call LRMs scrub or newbie weapons are all using the same near-instant hit AC and PPC configurations. Hovering over a target and clicking a single button apparently is how "real" men fight it out. Takes soooo much leet skill, obviously, when compared to anything else.
So, it all boils down to who is using them. Right now, with many clan configs coming with LRMs stock (it's as if these Clanners saw value in ranged combat...weird right?) there is a bunch of them flying around. Nothing has changed, a good team will still use cover and ecm/ams effectively. A bad team, or overconfident team, will press out into the field of view of either lucky FnF's or one angry TFS.

@Oni Ralas: You are spot on with the proper way to use LRMs. Even then there are counters, and if the enemy is smart they find ways to mitigate being hit by your style lrm combat. At that point it becomes as tactical, and as much of a fight as brawling or harassing or any other non-lrm combat. In short, its fun. Its also not "LRM spamming" as the some like to complain that LRMs have devolved to.
If I get caught out in the open engaged with another brawler, and I suddenly am getting rained on by a fire support mech, then I deserve to go down.
If I am brawling near cover, I have a chance. I can try and position the cover between me and the firesupport mech, while brawling the first mech.
