It seems throughout the mechwarrior franchise, there's been a startling lack of melee. It's rather appalling that such a core mechanic is left out (Adds a whole new way to look at mechs)... and with that said
Will we ever get melee combat? If so when?
Is there any word on this yet, or has anyone suggested a good system for it?

Not likely, its been asked a lot and answered a lot, the problem is physics interactions over the net, and they haven't been bothered to fix the physics we currently have. So it won't happen at least until or unless we ever get collisions fixed in game.

That's a damn shame... that's taking such a giant chunk out of the point of mechs over tanks. Shame we'll never see dedicated melee mechs like Axman and Hatchet too.

I want melee combat. In fact, that should really be the way to bring back knockdowns.

I wouldnt say never to melee combat.

However if melee combat is added its almost certainly going to be for specific mechs only that are SUPPOSED to have melee weapons. Like the hatchetman.

You definitely wont be able to give any mech you want a melee weapon because that would require way more effort than its worth. Theyd have to reanimate all the arms for all the mechs in the game.

As much as I'd love to have a Hatchetman or Axeman, there are so many bigger fish to fry than melee that I don't mind. I believe the official word is that they'd love to add it in, but it's not even in their current long range plans.

1: Hit detection between melee targets. Show me ONE FPS that have had good melee.

2: Scaling damage to match risk vs reward without turning it in to a one punch kill.

3: Height scaling... Or how to make the Atlas and the Commando fight without it looking like utter waste.

You know in BT that there is Melee/physical attacks without necessarily requiring a specific melee weapon like a hatchet or sword. Virtually every mech could punch, kick, or charge. Jump mechs could DFA. A mech having hands was a huge deal because of this because it made punching easier. It also impacted weapon placement. Many mechs had their weapons concentrated in the torsos for the very reason that it freed the arms up for melee. Physical attacks were such a huge part of BT that they had their own combat phase if I remember correctly. It's a shame that no MW game as been able to implement this.

My thoughts exactly, but if it's not possible from a tech standpoint, oh well.

I don't mind melee fights actually, but PGI said something like "Hey, we can't handle that little content we have right now, do you really want US to show our vision of melee fights?" or something close to it, can't remember now.

Im aware of that. But the reality is melee attacks have to be animated. Animating mech components for all the existing mechs would cost a lot of money. Its simply not cost-effective.

As I said, I would not rule out melee attacks as a possibility, but if melee attacks are added to the game it will only be for mechs like the hatchetman that are specifically known for using hatchets.

This is the same can of worms that I replied to in another thread. There SHOULD be melee, knockdown, and some kind of consequence for ramming another mech - or not knowing how to pilot your own. We had a great system in Beta - and so many people cried because they didn't like the fact they couldn't avoid physical contact without an aggressive pilot knocking them over so it was removed post haste.

It will never come back - because that same vocal minority is still here.

You've definitively got selective memory if you think that "We had a great system in Beta".

The beta system was horribly broken, an unbreakable stun lock mechanic, led to several matches starting off as falling domino chain reactions as one mech bumped another one at spawn, who bumped another by falling, etc.

There was nothing "Great" about it, except how greatly broken a game mechanic it was.

We most likely will never get Melee, get over it.

Unless and until we get fully functional collisions, it's not even an option.
