How is mech-height a problem anyway? If the Vulcan stays true to its original design, yes it's going to be tall, but with spindly limbs, a skinny torso and huge gaps between the arms and the body, which is a really good thing to have in MWO, since shots going towards your torso have a high chance of missing completely.

I never found "height" of the mech to ever be a problem (i mean, how often do you overshoot a mech? miss in the vertical plane? Almost never, in my case. It's the horizontal plane that matters and Vulcan could possibly be very good for it).

Also Vulcan is a 3025 chassis, which makes it inherently superior.

Precisely. Height is a factor only when it comes to hugging short terrain, but width has the single largest impact on how we can effectively direct damage. A horizontal slice across a mech's torso renders 5 components to hit. The narrower the mech, or the smaller the components (inter-spaced by "air space" between parts), the harder it becomes to focus a single component on a moving target, as the bounding boxes for those sections are narrower.

It's why, for example, I can put most of an SRM salvo into the side torso of a griffin from the front, but I'd be guaranteed to hit two or even three sections on a Bushwacker or an Assassin with the same weapon from the same angle. This leads to natural durability in that the mech will automatically spread damage. A vertical slice of the mech, however, will only ever render one or two components, meaning the impact of height is far lower on the ability to single out a section than the impact of width. Makes hugging terrain harder if you're taller, but that's about the end of that downside.

The Vulcan, as an example mech, might be tall, but it is typically shown with spindly limbs and torso components, with plenty of air space between the parts. Lots of room for shots to miss between armpits and such, with narrow critical components where they exist. Perhaps the largest single target on the mech is the cockpit housing sphere, but otherwise? I wouldn't be terribly concerned.

Of the leading 3 IS medium Mechs in Gas's poll, the Chimera is easily the worst. Not as bad as in TT, as you can switch the MRM for something that suits such a Mech better, but still very bad. It has few hardpoints to begin with, and those few hardpoints are highly eclectic. It has a horrible geometry with hugely vulnerable STs, and with that weight you'd want an XL.

Sha Yu and Sentry are vastly superior at 40 tons.

I mean we could invoke the Uziel-principle again, i.e. preferring an objectively bad unit for no other reason than MW:4, so that nobody wins in the end.

I like the Sha Yu, it's a mean little beast.... More to the point it's the SYU-6B that I really like.

Also kind of surprised, yet not surprised that you didn't mention the Watchman as a 40t unit...

Well I think you can guess it: Watchman and Sentry are very similar, but the Sentry has slightly better hardpoints.

I mostly like the looks of the Sha Yu, but seems like a capable Mech in MWO. Nothing earth-shattering (few if any of the 40t Mechs are...) but alright. I would not expect world beaters with 40 tons, just some nice interesting chassis. There are some options, however the Chimera is not one of them.

Your Vulcan is very unhappy now - tell me what does the Chimera has that a Vulcan can't do better?
Tell me what a Hellspawn can what a Dervish can't do better

Chimera is a missile mech, and the Hellspawn is 10 tons lighter (important for FP dropdecks) than a Dervish and 11 kph faster.

I want all 4. Because I can see the differences.

Tap into some apparently unmined vein of MW4 nostalgia for PGI. TT is mined out it seems for PGI (EXCEPT ITS FRIGGING NOT!?!?), MW3 IS mediums are covered, cartoon mediums are covered, MW4 is the uncharted frontier...

maybe, maybe not. Depends on if PGI is going to be forward thinking enough to realize MW5 will need new mechs to keep interest.... and thus be available for MWO purchase after MW5 launches. So for the span in between actually makes good sense to focus on designs NOT in the MW5 era, while designing and building those behind the scenes.

At least, that's how I would do it. Especially since MW4 machines are tied into the FedCom Civil War Era MWO is currently in.

I incorrectly assumed that PGI would absolutely pump out more TRO:3025/2750 designs to help both HBS and MW5 pad out their Third Succession War 'Mech rosters and since then we've had one... the Javelin. Given how long it takes to make 'Mechs I seriously doubt anything behind the scenes is being done.

I want to believe, but...

I think there are enough mechs for HBS' Battletech. They don't even use all of them, so I don't expect more (3025 mechs) to come soon.

EDIT. Next IS mechs should be: Hellspawn (MW4), Fafnir (MW4), Argus (MW4), Raptor (omni), Men Shen (omni) and maybe Avatar (MW3, MW4, omni) and Templar (MW4, omni). Heck, even the Flea (MW4) becomes a valid candidate. That pretty much covers all IS mechs for 2018. For 2019? - no idea. (But I would like to see Wasp and Crusader after the legal issue with Harmony Gold is finally concluded) Unfortunately, melee is not in the plans of PGI (yet). Scarabus, Hatchetman, Axman and Berserker would be a perfect (and super successful) pack for "selling" Solaris... Posted Image

It's not a matter of not using all of them, it was that they have very focused goals, and know their limitations, so they had a cut off for the Launch as to how many mechs they would promise. With two of those at least temporarily off the table they may or may not add others, or at least more variants of extent models to their stable. But since they actually do have to re-do a lot of the work and re-rig and fully animate, have given them new destruction skins, etc? It's no small feat.

That said, Holly is apparently in the end phase of animations of the current batch, so with a 2018 launch date now, and the confusion over the HG stuff, it is possible (though by no means a lock) that they add more.

Let's not obfuscate one thing with the other.

Except if you think about it, as I said in my above post, it would make very little business sense to release any more of the 3025 mechs BEFORE MW5 Launches.

1) You need some Sizzle for the game itself. Sure, a new MW single player title is cool... but nowhere near as cool as if it has new Mechs.

2) There is fatigue in some parts of the fan base on 3025. You saw that with the Assassin, etc. Give them a rest, especially since;

3) With the CivilWar bringing new tech, there is immediate, focused demand for new mechs to maximize that tech. That's striking while the iron is hot.

4) Then, the logical flow, is when MW5 Launches, it will bring sizzle and attention back to those chassis...especially any new ones released WITH MW5. That is the time for PGI to maximize sales of those chassis for MWO.

They have hired a lot of people, things are still moving upward for PGI, and a ton of focus is on MW5, because as a Basic Game, MWO is what it is. At this point it's balance and maintenance largely.

That is just smart sales modeling. And if there is one thing PGI seems to do well, it's sell mechpacks.

I would rather point out that the Avatar is just an important Mech of the era for many great powers (Dracs, Lyrans, FedSuns, and ComStar) as far as the lore is concerned.

As far as MWO is concerned however... do you really want a 70 ton Mech with 65 kph speed, fixed (IS) XL engine, and easily vulnerable STs? There is no way this Mech can work in MWO, it's instant death, at least under the current OmniMech system.
If it had greater speed, or a STD engine, it could be salvaged by quirks. But as it stands this Mech is a waste, and it's MW:4 'fame' does nothing to help it.

That makes me wonder what the heck the Clan mechs are going to be up until September 2018. Since alot of the most requested mechs from the clan bracket are unseens, I wonder if PGI is going to say F it and release them anyways. Unless they do something sinfully evil like introducing mixed IS tech mechs, we only have so many options for clan mechs until then. I guess 2018 will be primarily the year of IS Omnimechs. We shall see.

Okay, so I went through a couple of the "most likely" mechs for the next anouncement and theorycrafted builds for them. Enjoy. =3

Nice job! Just a note, though. Stock, the Black Lanner may have 13 tons of pod space, but it is missing quite a lot of armor to manage that. Once you get the armor up, you are looking at 11 tons. Maybe 12 if you skimp on the armoring.

All Black Lanner builds assuming only 15 points of armour stripped (for instance, 5 points removed from the cockpit and each leg). Therefore 12 tons of podspace. Not sure how you're only getting 11 tons. With maximum armour it has 11.615 free tons. NVM, I EFFED UP, YO.

Also, stripping a single empty arm yields you one spare ton to use.

No equipment, max armor:

11 tons exactly. If there is a rounding issue here, it should put it closer to 11 than 12. Do note that MML has been extremely accurate for every other mech I've run through the theorycraft engine for - outside of manually doubling the armor values. Usually off by around 3 points of armor.

[Redacted].

I wasn't rounding internal structure up to the nearest half ton.

Can't believe I missed this... I've checked many many many builds against both Smurfy and stock lore loadouts and they all checked out... I don't understand how they fit perfectly if I was missing this...

Okay, so the difference here is about 0.25 tons. So my builds still work. It's only ten more points of amour. So 6 off each leg, cockpit stripped down to 5. I usually run less than that, but I like to have extra armour on my theorycraft to accomodate for people who don't like to strip. I guess this time... stripping included. =P

I'm curious as to your reasoning for why the Black Lanner is more likely than the Phantom or Pouncer. Granted, the Black Lanner is essentially the middle ground between those two with both speed and fire power while having a little more armor but comes in at 15 tons heavier than the other 2. I may be wrong here but it seems like it will play like a flightless Shadowcat (real irony with the animal names here) with a better speed tweak. When examining the other 2 mechs more closely, the Phantom provides novelty in its extreme speed and ecm while providing good hard point diversity. The Pouncer would be, as has been pointed out many times, like a heavier Adder in a way, but would provide add jump jets and provide a variety of builds that would play well stock. Out of those 3 mechs, the Pouncer would make the most sense to me because of its solid mobility and the powerful punch it would provide at its weight +/- 10 tons, which is one of the major short comings of clans in that weight range. I could also understand the Arctic Wolf being the reason the Phantom an Pouncer get knocked out of the running.

I looks like the next 4 mechs are figured out, but there is fun still!

Lets see the candidates for the 5 "loyalty" variants:
  • Clan collector pack: Night Gyr E (more energy), Night Gyr H (ECM), Warhawk F (ballistic RT), Warhawk D (2 energy RT), Dire Wolf H or X (more options).

I was just looking into Warhawk builds today and realized that they should release the Warhawk D,F, and H. D and F you covered above, but the H would provide a unique 2 energy, 1 missile Left Arm. The Warhawk is a great mech in capable hands, but it's lack of diversity and reliance on heavy weapons makes it a touch mech to approach or even maintain interest in with it's high learning curve. I'd love to see one of my all time favorites become more accessible to a wider variety of players. I'd spend a lot less time justifying my decision :P

Yep, Warhawk needs more released configurations. Maybe PGI will give us 2 variants at the same time? (like they did with the Summoner)

That would be awesome, or even if they considered giving us the Summoner G at some point; the 3 missile hard points in each ST would make it make that mech vicious!.
