I like this solution...
Inner Sphere vs. Inner Sphere: 12 vs. 12 (3 Lances vs. 3 Lances) = 24 BattleMechs
Inner Sphere vs. Clan: 16 vs. 10 (4 Lances vs. 2 Stars) = 26 BattleMechs
Clan vs. Clan: 10 vs. 10 (2 Stars vs. 2 Stars) = 20 BattleMechs
That would be EASY to do with a certain thing called Community Warfare.
Too bad Clans will be released far before anything that looks alike is even whispering inside the masterminds @ PGI.
But quite frankly, even with CW working before the Clans, I think that without some sort of PVE/Cooperative.. the playerbase would not be enough to go live with full IS team vs full Clan teams.

IMO, the second point is far more likely to become "IS vs. Clan: 12 vs. 10 (3 lances vs. 2 Stars) = 22 BattleMechs".
A set of three lances (of four BattleMechs apiece) compose one standard Company.
Even the "Augmented Company" occasionally used by the Capellans still consists of a total of 12 combat units, albeit organized into two sets of 6 (where each set is made up of either 4 'Mechs + 2 Combat Vehicles, or 4 'Mechs + 2 squads of Battle Armor infantry) rather than the typical three groups of 4 'Mechs.
Sets of four lances "aren't a thing" in BT.
Moreover, keeping the IS side at 12 'Mechs (rather than increasing the count to 16) means fewer resources required by the servers (as there are only 22 'Mechs, rather than 26) and less additional programming (as then they're just dealing with sets of 12 & sets of 10, rather than sets of 12 & sets of 10 and sets of 16).

But 3 IS lances can't beat 2 Clan stars...

Yeah, gonna have to go with False as well on this. Your argument might hold some water with stock configurations, but with all the custom builds that are running around MWO it's a much different story.

Wait till the Clans roll around with UAC/20's and ER medium lasers and we shall see.

Yeah, that's not going to be a lot of fun especially seeing as how like 6 of 8 of them will be able to run paired uAC/20s (or at least be able to mount dual ballistics of varying types), but I'm thinking PGI knows about that as well, and will take steps to help deal with the situation. I think the engine limitations and the inability to change armour are part of it. Tonnage limits will also probably help.

86 km/h dual UAC/20, full-armor Timber Wolf doesn't care about engine limitation. (the same for his stock brother with quad SSRM/6s + dual ER PPC)
Let me say it again: you guys put too much faith on PGI.
The Clan weapons are very balanced between themselves (well, except for the LBXs, which are bad as always) but trying to "balance" this with IS tech is a quixotic quest.
Heck, they didn't even succeed to balance the IS weapons!

Yep...
That's the entire premise of things like Hunchback IIC and the main reason you never, ever want to face a decent Daishi pilot.
Not even keeping your distance can save your 'bottom' in that sort of situation (the CUAC/20 has ERML range [1080m], which means GG for anyone in MW:O's ballistic damage fall-off system).

Well, the thread had its golden months in the first quarter of 2013... lots of new, (and sometimes) unpredictable mechs popping up.
The Phoenix and the Clan packages kind of spoiled the fun, by showing everything at once, but we still hope for 1 new light and 1 new assault mechs for April and May...

Thanks for the catch with the timing. Much better than the many random guess threads.
Thry've stated clearly they want mediums as the most prevalent on the battlefield, so I think there will be more mediums than others, but sadly, in this era, the best mediums are almost all Unseen.
As you can see, it's being a long run since the NDA Closed Beta... for that time, there were dozens of similar threads. But thanks to the contribution of some great forum members, this one is the only "Ultimate Mech Discussion Thread".
I sincerely hope PGI will get everything straight and make 2014 a great year for MWO. (so we can enthusiastically continue to try to guess mechs for the next years)
PS: Firestarter and Banshee, go!

It makes sense...
They certainly will need to allocate that big art department to do something, as the whole batch of 8 Clan mechs will be already done by June, 2014... what they will do in these eight months?
Unfortunately, IS mechs will lose a lot of appeal after the Clan "invasion" in June, so maybe they will produce only Clan mechs for at least 1 year. (see the OP for more Clan mechs' options)

For true fun, I think everyone would enjoy a Mauler, which would be truly a blessed mech in this game. As for the lights, a firestarter would be ok, though quite frankly, the lights have limited options because they didn't put sized hardpoints in, so everything in them is probably covered already in terms of capabilities.
