I don't know... I still find a well played light mech (any) is worth for the tonnage. You talked about noobs - well, noobs shouldn't be piloting a light mech in the first place.
Panther and Wolfhound aren't bad mechs for what they are supposed to do. Panther is a Light fire support mech(Gee, I wonder what else is supposed to fill this role?), and the Wolfhound is a Light-hunter. The problem is now that Volumetric scaling has kicked these two into the laughably bad category, same as the Firestarter.
Size is a problem. Quirks are a bandaid that only covers up the issue, rather than actually dealing with the problem. Why take an ACH over a Firestarter? Because the ACH doesn't have the frontal profile of a large Medium, thats why.
A well played Locust or Commando will have a far greater impact on a battle's outcome than a well played Firestarter, Wolfhound, or Panther will.
