Let's Talk About Ping. At What Point Do You Start Actually Noticing A Difference To Your Gameplay?

Totally forgot about the Hitreg problem after playing another game where hitreg is not even a problem (WoT).
Usual ping is around 300-400ms, which explains why when I drive a 2xERPPC/Gauss K2, my damage output hovers around 50-100, I keep hitting ppl on my screen but the crosshairs never turn red.
That was when I remembered why I had so many LRM boats - LRMs are immune to the hitreg problem and I usually get 200-500dam games (except when I get isolated by a hunting light)
My damage also seems to be ok (200-300) when I drive autocannon mechs - it looks like the higher rate of fire is making up for the lag, whereas when I drive high-alpha/single shot mechs, my output suffers.

Most of the time when i play it's about 49-78 in terms of ping.
When it goes over that i start to rubberband hard and it just makes any direct fire weapons i am using utterly useless for me.
its like watching a player or yourself walk out into the enemy team and there gone kinda moment. Mean while on screen you dont see anything happening or you experience that speed up slowdown thing.
where everyone is in one zone and the next moment it shows them bearing down on you. meanwhile your just staring at them coming around the corner and its not responding to any commands.
other than that really its either really strong hiccups where u phase back a square or they phase away or closer to u during lead times with weapons.

Take a recording of your 2xERPPC/Gauss games where you think your hit reg is bad and ask a long-time player to review it.
If I had to guess (and this is purely a guess), it's not the higher rate of fire with autocannons, but the higher DPS and closer engagement range that is helping your damage ... that you are over-estimating your own accuracy at extreme ranges with ERPPCs and Gauss. Even when you lead your target perfectly, it is pretty easy for a 'mech with convergence issues (like the CPLT-K2) to only hit with one of three projectiles.
Also, ~300 is normal for Aussie ping to NA servers, ~400 is normal to EU.

First reply to OP
My initial load in ping in Europe server is always 35 then goes to 45 walking around admiring the scenery before the action starts.
Then I get busy and don't notice the tiny ping numbers on screen untill my lock on icon starts spinning fron amber to red and dosn't go red then i glance up to see 120 to 200.
I have just returned and are mastering the 6xLRM5 Catapult A1 so random hit area selection dosen't bother me at all.
The hit registration on normal lasers was weird so I switched to pulse lasers and the shorter duration seems to improve damage.
The modified Hit registration observed by others with ER-PPC's and AC's explains why I can sit still at 180m in my Cat-2K and unload into the back of a cicada which is shut down and do 4 pts damage from the 2 AC2's and nothing from the ER-PPc's
The talk about the vision modes using theromgraphic which is the preferred mode for ice City night usualy causes lag (no it is not FPS that is steady at 20psec)
However dropping Forest colony night with Light amplification on seems to even out ping (it also slightly lowers FPsec but that is irrelevent)
Using the Jester standing still with twin ER-ppc's at 750m range with a TAG locked on to the target I only hit targets moving directly toward or away from me.(Command Console + BAP too)
Connecting to the North America servers my ping is 100+ initialy but usually steady between 200-300 once the action is joined.
I accidentally connected to Singapore once and there was more teleportation than a Startreck Voyager Episode.
But I have had some good odd experiences too an hour ago I had ping spikes up to 7600 and the game didn't disconnect me despite pogoing between that and 1000-1200
So thanks for the Advice I will be:
-Switching my CAT-K2 to bigger AC's for better hit registration
-Not wasting 5000GXP (and the C-Bills) on Advanced Zoom as it wont work anyway
-Not standing still ever!!! I will set my throttle to 1 so the stationary shooting issues should go away.
Thanks to all for the great advice :-)
Is there anyway to determine my targets ping so I can vary my Lead?

On oceanic, ping tend to be in the 100's.
No obvious issues that might not also be contributed to player skill (or lack there of ).
Other servers tends to be in the mid 200's to 300's. This means any CW and most group que games.
Significant trouble with hit reg on anything moving.
Occasional issues with teleporting light mechs.
Last few days experienced delays of half a second or more between pressing a command and it happening. Not much fun when a salvo at an opponent's crippled CT doesn't kick in before you take a fatal hit.

Anything lower than 100ms seems rather indistinguishably fine to me. I have a low latency SHDSL line anyway, and with EU servers in place my pings sit around 20-25ms, which is of course absolutely perfect. But to me it seemed that 80-90 is just as good.

Anytime that I am looking at really bad ping times I switch to my LRM boats and hope for the best. Guided weapons seem to do better for me when my ping is bad. Otherwise I really LOVE UAC-5s and lasers.

Got access to 90Mbps and 60Mbps connections.
Both give me between 4-10ms ping in NA servers.
Both give me between 70-90ms ping in EUR servers.
Not playing on OC servers since I go over 200ms
Playing a lot with lasers and little with ballistics. Both react relatively well if <100ms.
Getting slight hit reg issues over 100ms.
Getting noticeable zoom lag and other inputs lag if spiking around 200ms.
Getting major rubber banding if a player or myself is >300ms.
Almost unplayable if a player is >400ms.
Smooth experience if every player are under 100ms.

Normal Ping range is between 220 and 280 for EU and 250 - 320 for American.
As long as my ping stays below 300, I can play and Hit Registration seems solid enough.

My ping to Europe has been getting progressively worse over the months. It started at 100 when the server was introduced, it's now up to 160. I don't think this is an issue with my ISP. My ping to other games has been the same. I think your service provider is degarding its service to you.
The Good News
4 days ago, my ping to Oceanic suddenly went to 88. This is the first time my ping to Oceanic has been lower than 350. At the same time, my ping to NA and Europe went to 350. I believe my local ISP may have rerouted through Singapore for some reason.
The Return of the Bad News
2 days ago my ping to Oceanic went back to it usual unplayable state. My ping to NA and Europe is 220 and 250. Europe continues to offer only 160.
The Effect of Ping
Having played at high ping for so long, I can tell you what a difference it makes when your ping is suddenly <100. Shots go where you place them. Enemies die. I was doing 700+ damage a game instead of 400. It's that pronounced.
I am based in the Middle East and have fibre to the home.

Ping to the US server around 120 and I notice the odd teleport/ odd behaviour but this is rare and is generally fine.
Oceanic is in the high 200s to mid 300s and can be very choppy so I generally won't play it here.

I notice rubber banding, lags, etc. at 180ms.
Here's what's interesting though: If I am in a match on the NA servers where a lot of non-North American players have decided to log in, I notice a huge lag. I press the TAB key in game and note that /their/ ping (which is to be expected) is 200+ consistently.
This may sound like a horrible statement, but the folks across the pond should be using their own servers.

The statement is not horrible, but sometimes the difference between an instant match and a fifteen minute wait is checking NA (or EU), in addition to OC.
Over here on the other side of the big pond, trust me, we know all about how ping differences can make the game difficult to play (we didn't always have regional servers). What you see when you target us, we see pretty much all the time. (If Battle for Tukayyid queues are any real indication, there's about six times more NA players than OC.)
It's not horrible, but it is unreasonable ... also, for CW, there are only NA servers.

That looks like you're about to embark on a journey of discovery in the dark realms of ISP customer service.
While PGI may be able to help (if you provide the name of your ISP), adding your voice to the cacophony of complaints to the business that pushes electrons to your PC may help.
