I'm waiting for the flood of alts here vehemently denying the cheating. I hope their wailing pleas fall on deaf ears.

As crappy as the courts are I am glad they are not this crappy.
"Well we know someone in the house is guilty of murder......death by lethal injection for the whole family."

See why thats stupid. Ban the account that is directly involved in the offence, but not anyone who plays from that location.

They would not ban based on shared IP address. It is not sufficient to identify cheating. You certainly could not say 100% certain if you banned accounts based on shared IP.

If PGI has the tools then they know which account was logged in playing MWO at what times and what hack tools were active during that session. The account would be banned for that.

Also, the story of someone's kids downloading something off the internet may have a problem since I thought that most hacks charged money for them ... did the "kids" actually pay someone on the internet for a hack?

Good job, Soy. Now, go find the DDOS attackers and inform PGI of that!

I figured that might be what's causing our current connectivity issues, I looked up the most recent attacks today and there's been a bunch of short attacks directed towards Canada the last week, it seems like the sort of thing someone who already spent money on a hack subscription would pay for when they're throwing a tantrum. I can't really say for sure if these specific attacks were targeting PGI but once the data from today is up I'll probably know.

So you lied when you claimed you were not aairu, but you weren't lying about cheating. And you're not lying niw.

You understand how your credibility might be seen as questionable

Glad PGI got rid of cheaters. Won't be surprised if more get banned later. Course gotta wonder how dumb these people were. I could even tell the last announcement about cheat tools that they were giving some in the community a chance to stop or they would be banned too. Guess these people thought I haven't got banned so they must not have detected me. Good riddance. Cheaters brings everyone down.

The point is PGI is not legally obligated to narrow down the offending PC and the implied user over breaking the ToS. It's industry standard to ban the IP...

PGI knows which accounts are logged in from any given IP address. Any hack detection and identification can not simply be based on IP since anything going through a router has the same outward facing IP address and that includes businesses, University residences, home networks as well as any shared network. There are many situations where unrelated persons would share the same external IP address ... so unless Russ or someone from PGI has stated that they banned accounts from the specific IP address due to one instance of cheating then I don't see how folks can keep claiming that the accounts were banned due to a shared IP address.

The accounts were banned for cheating.

The list is delightfully short. There is hope for the MWO community.

playing devils advocate here.
it is in pgi's interest to keep that list short.
rampant cheating will kill the player base and kill the game.
there are already not enough people playing this game in certain timezones.

throwing out a handful publically
makes it look like they are doing something
and the short list implies it is not widespread
thus calming the waters for the player base.
All good PR.

meanwhile the cheating continues by the cleverer ones

pgi just nailed the low hanging fruit

There will always be cheaters. However, the question about whether PGI will do anything about it has been decisively answered. Before where people may have assumed they were risk free (and based on several founders and high end Clan 1 packages, they probably did assume that), people now have to weigh the value of their account (including the time spent getting free stuff) vs the benefit of cheating. And that calculus is quite horrible once you have any time or money invested in the game.

Um with a user name like yours... I'd be careful. Then again you may just be trying to live up to the name... B)

Actually, I was thinking about why someone might demand proof so loudly ... one possible reason that came to mind is that the author of the hack code would REALLY like to know how the software was identified ... so they could fix it. Detection of hack code destroys their business model. If evidence were provided it would certainly offer hints regarding what was used to identify the hack.

Combine that with a name like "I Make Bad Decisions" and his comments about how easy it is to replicate hacks for DirectX based games (which seemed to imply a certain level of expertise in hacking) and conspiracy theorists might have a field day :)

Did he by any chance write a salty mail to PGI, regarding a chargeback on his daughters account?

I'm relieved. I would hate to recognize any more names. I would hate to lose respect for the folks I know. Even the ones I disagree with on a regular basis. Me disagreeing with someone does not mean I don't respect them. ;)

That all you can come back with? Surely you can be more entertaining than that. :P

Meanwhile I'll continue enjoying TheWarOwl's Overwatch videos. Some of the cheaters in there are hilarious to watch!

I recognize Bhael and randmr24. I've been killed by both a few times, including one or two seemingly very lucky headshots by the latter, but I wouldn't have thought much of that had he not been banned for cheating. It's not like I've never gotten a lucky headshot myself.

I recognised enough of the names that I laughed my ass off. Several holier-than-thou forum types we won't have to put up with any more. Shame to lose that many players, tho. It's not like we have many left.

Reminds me of Medal of Honor multiplayer. All of 60 people still playing that at any given time, and there's still people using aimbots. Can't understand that mindset.

Right, they are looking for specific accounts being active and them intercepting packets during the session (wallhack) not sure if aim bot works the same way i would imagine so, it need to know where the mechs are at all time to work correctly unless you took the time to set it up and hide it....

The way they were caught was leaked on outreach hpg. (cant talk or post links here) but it was very surgical and very directed. You either had the very specific software or you didn't.

Yeah they only caught the 64 people who didn't patch before playing, but more will be caught soon enough. Don't let anyone who professes otherwise fool you.

These will be the next excuses you hear.
I only installed it to see how it worked.
I only used it once.
It wasn't that good.

Everyone had fair warning it was going down, and to stop before the anti cheat method was implemented. If you got busted afterwards guess what to bad.

You can still get your money back for resistance 2 and wave 3 Russ said as much. Take your losses and go pollute another game please.

Ban wave 2 is coming, remember that. So anyone else out there still doing it and got lucky this time. Stop now.
