Having a LRM centric build is already being down a useful player.

They are terribly inefficient weapons that are so easy to completely neuter.

They often can't keep up with the deathball, and I'm not about to kill myself trying to support him, while he can't even damage the enemy.
Down a player, without saying a single thing.

I won't insult them when asking for locks; I'll just ignore them. I lock targets when I shoot them. I will not not get locks out of spite, but I won't stop torso twisting so he can pad his stats with useless damage.

They are generally a waste of a player slot.

RIP Catapult A1.

No?

Not a single one has been affected.

I love LRM boats on the other team, hate them on mine. If it's a competent player I'll make an exception, but if it's an LRM assault I'll leave him to die.

Typical really. A good player won't ever ask for locks LRMs or not. Any mech, indirect fire ones included, should share the damage team takes, but asking for locks means you don't intend to, which in turn only means you don't plan to help your team in the first place and only person you care about is you.

Ask yourself this ... how many times have you seen a fully fresh LRM mech in the end of a game that can't do crap about a couple badly damaged enemies. All these matches would have been so very different if mr.LRM would have "tanked" when needed and kept a couple of his direct fire friends alive, who would have in turn helped him in the end, but no, that hardly ever happens. Its one thing when mr.fresh.LRM happens to do at least 500 damage in such match, but when I see a ~90% fresh assault LRM yacht at 10:10 score that dies horribly to a couple of Spiders and ends up with ~100 damage only thing that comes in mind is uninstall.

So yeah ... stop asking people to hold locks. If they intend to they will regardless and if they don't they won't. Go seek your own locks and go share the taken damage. If more LRM boats will start doing that the amount of LRM hate will also reduce dramatically. If the only way you can play with LRMs is when somebody else provides you locks then LRMs are just not for you.

"Thirdly I know I get annoyed by LRM boats complaining about me not holding locks"

That's odd. I've been here 6 months now and have never heard an LRM boat complain in chat.

All they say is: "hold locks pls, LRM here". Amazing this is such a controversial request.

Look, I'm a light pilot, I'll hold locks when I can but I'm not getting myself killed for a small amount of damage. So... if I'm behind them I'll lock for you and aim at their legs instead of the rear torso armor when your lrms hit them to disguise that I'm there but that's about all I can do for you. To be honest, I like having LRM support to kill or scare the morons who chase the squirrel. But... ECM unfortunately completly nullifies LRMS and since LRMs aren't that common I'm not gonna carry a tag or narc and loose a substantional portion of my firepower. Also... since LRMS aren't that useful in general please stop bringing heavy and assault LRM boats. A trebuchet or adder LRM boat? Usefual area denial without taking up one of the important dirrect fire and damage soaking slots.

To be honest, all of this could be fixed by allowing LRMs to lock on any target that you can see.

For me, it's not about kills (although I seem to do ok with them), it's about making the enemy targeted worry a lot more about getting his arse blown off than chasing that Jenner (who usually gets the kill).

Agreed. I have a Kintaro LRM boat I take out for fun every now and then. Keeping someone pinned down with a little rain is part of the fun.

I keep moving, get my own locks, and I prefer to engage LOS inside of 400 meters if I can. Standing still at the back of the map spewing missiles is boring and a sure way to die quickly. Shoot and scoot...........

Exactly. By the time the lights come to "take out the boat", the boat has left the harbor and is shooting them from "over there".

Well, LRM/arty type weapons tend to polarize peoples opinions and reactions, so don't expect a lot of intelligent discussion on these threads.

People also tend to throw in all their 'bad player in poorly designed mech' or 'I am good player I don't need to be told' comments on these.

Bad players are bad for the team whether they are in LRM mechs, PPC mechs, laser mechs they can't hit with, whatever.

Myself I rarely play LRM mechs - as people say, they are inefficient weapons overall. That being said, I have to level 3 of each chassis: if one of those 3 happens to have 4 or more missile hardpoints and isn't an SRM-assassin, it's likely I'm going to run an LRM build on it. (Or if it has LRM quirks.) Plus it mixes up the play style.

If I find myself going into battle in one of those LRM mechs, I *do* say "hold locks if you can, please". Because that tells anyone with Tag or Narc or Active Probe they can get a little more use out of those systems; it lets the team know I am probably not a front line mech; and it reminds people to hit that R key and keep it on if they can.

In every match I spectate, there are still people who a) rarely lock their target or, b ) tab through targets repeatedly for no apparent reason I can see (though they may have their own reason, of course).

I'm not telling you how to play. I'm not looking to be carried. I'm not asking you to risk yourself. I'm giving you useful information phrased as a polite request. If you have trouble with that, that's your problem, not mine.

LRM-Boat- don't bother asking for locks. I agree with the Jerk in the OP story.

Jerk in OP story- Don't encourage ppl to DC just to spite you, by being a jerk. Do what everyone else does and ignore the LURM-Jockey.

Both are idiots.

disregard lrm you should always lock targets if possible because if they are not locked other people don't see them on their radar map and therefore cannot plan the engage, they may wrongly engage and be focused down, also locks help streakboats to peep and immediately shoot already having lock

also locking a target without engaging ('scouting') gives you like 2000 c-bills

As someone else more less basically stated, when you make that "hold locks" request, what that means is you have ZERO intent on taking any risk yourself. You feel your job is to sit back, put the little circle in the big square, wait for the big circle and push the "all the missiles" button, get kills and masturbate your epeen on how awesome you are.

The people of actual LRM skill don't ask for others to hold their locks, they've got the sense to know the following:

1. The best lock is one you've made yourself.
2. Load up my own goddamn tag thank you very much.
3. NARCs are nice, but not necessary.
4. NO, I WON'T only bring LRMs, I will bring a secondary weapon to fend off lights all by myself.

Those that aren't skilled and don't care to be skilled are the vociferous whiners bitching how no one else is doing their work for them.

Which is why I tried to switch this from a ***** about the poor persecuted LRMer, and more to a rant how it's just SMARTER to press R to target what you're shooting at, NO MATTER WHAT.

LRM's aren't effective if you're relying on others to get your locks.

Just like relying on an LRM boat 3 grids away to actually provide you with quality fire support.

In solo drops, be they regular queue or CW, I NEVER rely on my teammates unless I know who they are and know they're reliable. The names I don't notice on my team? I just assume they're terrible at the game and don't stick my neck out for them because more often than not, they're actually pretty terrible at the game.

I pretty much don't have LRMs. If/when I do put them on, I generally have it on a mech with direct fire weapons and tag. I try to keep in the sweet spot of 190 meters to 400 meters so that I can use all my weapons.

I guess you could say I use them like long range streaks.

In the near three years I've been here, it's not at the start of match. It's at the end when he's bitching about people not getting locks while the team is getting rolled because they needed him up there with them and not three grids away.

What made you think I rely on others? Did you see the video on the first page?

Yes, I did.

And most players that type "LRMs here, locks please" are the guys in LRM Battledildos or an AS7-S with 4xLRM15s. I never see the guys in 4Js, Doges, or Cats type that ****.

Not true. I have 4 med pulse lasers in my LRM boat. Locks would be so that I can help you, not to get kills from you.

As you can see from many of the responses here, the majority of the time a LRM'r starts out by placing the responsibility of target locks on the 11 other people of his team, it's going to be someone who performs as I indicated.

Those LRM'rs who play using the 4 "knowns", typically don't bother making locks everyone else's responsibility.

EDIT: That said, locking a target you are shooting at is just plainly a good habit to have. It provides target info, letting you see where the enemy is most damaged, and if you're an intelligent player, capable of aiming, you'll actually shoot at those spots to more quickly kill that enemy.

Yes but what you didn't see in the video was the first few mins of that match where the Maddog did request for locks and met some resistance. The guy on the voice calmed everybody down and said "lets just work as a team". It turned out the two LRM boats turned the match from a losing one to a winning one.
