I have edited submissions by Skwisgaar Swedenborg and MechregSurn and uploaded them to chirbit:

FRR Production News
NGNG Jingle 2

Great work guys!

Atlas3060 also sent me a massive 12minute news/talk show segment that I'm still working on.

All Nickelback, all the time.

I can only play creative commons music or anything that I have permission to use. If you can get Nickleback's publisher to send me a signed waiver of royalty rights, I'll add them.

And I wasn't going to add it either :P

If you're able to register the station as a not for profit entity, you can get the broadcasting rights through Soundexchange for $500 annual (I'm sure the community can come up with those kind of donations :P). And you don't have to worry about pay per performance as long as we don't exceed 159,140 aggregate tuning hours per month (think we are safe there ^_^ )

http://soundexchange...tersimulcaster/

It is the same service which Pandora receives its broadcasting rights from.

That's definitely an interesting route. 2 things would have to happen though - I would need $525 per year in donations and a better server :P

I don't think my poor dual core, 4 gig machine with a 5400rpm hard drive could handle anything close to that.

However, there are some radio hosting options I'm looking into. Still, I find it rather fun to find open source alternatives like icecast and airtime.

I like what you've done with the station, I'd be in for $10 if you decided to license content. I doubt that you'd need a better rig to run streaming as that typically isn't very intensive.

Thanks Rommel :P. My usage is at:

Core 1: 40-60% Core 2: 30-50%
Memory: 630MB - 639MB
Network: 2.1Gig total ~41Kbps

This is with 2 - 8 listeners, though I don't expect it to increase much because it's only transcoding the stream once, no matter how many users and multicasting is divine. But if the HDD or any other part dies, the station is gone. Literally. My windows server is maxed out on its 8 gigs of memory (thank you hyper-v) and my DC is way too slow and flakey.

I'll talk with the folks at NGNG and see what they think about a donation system to support our projects. We also need a green light from PGI, Smith and Tinker, and IGP since we're generating revenue off their IP.

Well to be considered a non profit revenue will need to be funneled back into the project. You could not for example stream the podcast through the game because it then becomes a for profit entity. Now if they decided to include self made blurbs about the state of the inner sphere during loading screens and what not then that would be fine.

While I think it would be a good idea to get their blessing, I don't believe you are under any legal obligation to get their permission.

Streaming into the game is a grey area. Consider a GM car - it has a radio, but that doesn't mean GM is making money off the driver playing a radio station. I think for the same principle for MWO to work, they would need to code a universal player that could accept any URL. This actually isn't a bad idea, come to think of it.

That aside, using someone else's IP can get you into a lot of trouble, even if you're giving it away. Some companies are very aggressive about IP protection (like Games Workshop) and have shut down many fan driven projects. FASA was always pretty relaxed on their IP, but I would still rather have permission than get a cease and desist order thrown at me halfway through a project. Especially if people have donated money into it.

I have to agree with your sediment. No point in getting something like this off the ground unless you had the blessing of PGI. Might be the next step you take. Get it in writing and then start to work on the frame work. If it gets that far let me know, because I have experience in organizing start-up business (Profit or Non-Profit) and I can help with the structures and the required tax identification numbers.

Wow, guys, are we getting a little ahead of ourselves, here? I really like the idea of having a MechWarrior radio station, though it's not MechWarrior without all of the music from the previous MW games, but this sounds like it might be getting pretty serious?

Oiy only one voting option per member *snf* that's really not pleasing my wide music taste at all, so I voted Classical just to be on the side.

I enabled metadata for songs, so they should be displayed in your player (vlc, winamp, etc). Please make certain you have the latest version of VLC, as some of the versions are a bit buggy and prone to stopping after every track when receiving .ogg metadata.

Also, we're working on getting a web player up on NGNG so you can listen from the site.

As always, thank you for listening!

Stomach virus whooped my back end today and yesterday, I'll try and break that up into manageable chunks.

Just fyi, the metadata doesn't seem to be working in WinAmp. Otherwise doing great!

/edit: the metadata is going into the station title instead of into the information screen.

That's because OGG doesn't use any standards for metadata. Airtime is saying "I'm going to give you information like this" Winamp says "*** is this? I'll just put the track title up instead..."

Thought about running Linux to broadcast instead of windows? Folks would have to use a compatible player but it might be less stress on your machine. Setting it up on Ubuntu doesn't seem to hard, if you know a bit about Linux.

It is running on Ubuntu linux. What makes you think otherwise 0.o

EDIT: Ah, let me clarify. The machine running server 2008 is completely separate. I was saying if the Ubuntu server dies, I don't have room for another instance on my virtual server.

Stream compatibility doesn't change between server types, it's all .ogg format. Anything that can decode ogg can be used as a client.
