I've won many staring contests in the 1N against KCG's and Direwolfs because of that flamer.
AWWW, your dual AC20's/Quad UAC10's made you really hot? Have some FLAMER.
It's quite common to see people going crazy and spraying & praying when the Dragon engage in a hail of bullets so, yes, flamers are quite handy to make them overheat (or self-destruct).

Lasers are what you get when you make everything else not as good
PPCs were able to compete against lasers pretty well when the Clans first landed...but then they got their velocity meganerfed due to the 2 ERPPC + 2 Gauss Daishi, and then laser vomit took over. Since IS ACs were usually used in conjunction with PPCs, they were indirectly nerfed in the process.
Then we have LRMs that are...LRMs, and SRMs that are viable but require super short range.
Gauss however still makes a very nice companion for lasers because its velocity syncs well with them and they have no heat (which offsets the higher heat of pewpews).

Illya Died man. XL's get popped to easily now. Rest her soul.
Running XL in an Ilya is your first problem .
STD Engine (72kph), 3 A/C5s and 3 MLasers (A/C5 cooldown quirk (7.5 I think) with A/C5 Cool down Module. Its a bunch of win .
Now, I wouldn't say it is contention for the best IS Heavy, but it isn't a good idea to underestimate it either.

Timber Wolf and Stormcrow. That means they suck and you should sell them
They don't need them
They have Clan tech which is USUALLY much better than anything quirks can offer.

Burninate EVERYTHING!!
FIFY.
Drop by the C4 recruiting thread over in the Dav recruiting page. Tell them you need to be a part of DRAGON LANCE and that Big Tin sent you. Yes, this is a thing over there that happens regularly. 3 Dragon 1N's with flamers, 12 kills. Much lamentation.

The 5K is one of those quiet sleeper mechs no one really talks about
Yeah, EmP had one of those. I only saw the first two matches and I don't think they used it in the first one, only the second which was a tonnage limit drop. Not sure if they used it in the other 3 matches.

Yeah because unquirked Grasshopper is on par with a Timber Wolf.
Yeah, I get it. Now how many IS mechs in this thread are being held up SOLELY because of their great quirks, and who are the underdogs, that are still damn good mechs despite their lack of quirks? Thunderbolt and Dragons were absolute tier 5 trash before quirks, and Paul can send them back to the trash heap any time he wants to.
I'm looking at you Grasshopper & Cataphract. After the quirkening 2.0, we can come back and discuss who is still standing. They're good mechs that can still pull more than their share TODAY. Not Timbergods, but not artificially placed on a pedestal either.

Its hard to say, but Timberwolf and EbonJag I would put on top, closely followed by CauldronBorn.
They're all top tier, maybe of the entire game's worth of mechs.
But Ebon Jaguar IS the Cauldron Born.
Hahaha. "IS", you know? Because IS name for Ebon Jaguar is Cauldron Born?
