I can only speak on the level of indy games- no experience at all with bigger titles and I really don't even know which category MWO would fit in- but for the smaller titles getting on steam is a huge boost to income.

Look up introversion some time, who were brought out of bankruptcy and back to having a full team from one weekend sale. But there are plenty of other examples.

Within the indy games sector, getting on steam is kinda the "goal". There are other platforms out there, but steam wrecks them in terms not just of sales and player base size, but in terms of money to the developers pockets.

Although, everything is starting to shift around a bit because of Kickstarter and all the indie bundles after the success of the Humble Bundle, but I don't think steam is going anywhere. Honestly, I consider them one of the best things to happen to PC gaming in a long time.

Origin kinda sucks right now but I hope they work it up into a more viable platform. Its improved a bit since it started out so it might still happen. Having a "second steam" would be good for the industry I think.

And I still don't get the EA hate. They haven't done anything really that every other AAA is long guilty of, and have actually showed quite a lot of support for smaller/independent developers (Most recently, Origin has a program where EA won't take any money from the first month sales of any kickstarter-funded project). They used to be the bad guys- I'll never forgive them for Westwood Studios- but since they reorganized they've been, in my opinion, a lot more consumer friendly.

Mechwarrior Online is really only well known by a fairly niche audience. I've been trying to think of ways to get it some exposure. Telling all my friends has been a pretty decent contribution, but it only goes so far.

Steam has an impossibly large userbase and is typically pretty good about maintaining a good relationship with developers. I'd wager it a pretty good thing for MWO.

I have no issues with it being put onto steam after the initial player base is set up and playing. As for them taking a cut? well they do have to make money and support their service. And valve is not nearly the monster some of you would have people believe. Yes they are going to try to make money they are a company that's kind of the point. However their business practices are far better than the other option thats been listed here.

As for MWO on origin... OH HELL NO... Ok with that out of my system. I would be willing to put money down that if IGP and PGI went and had a sit down with EA. That while they may or may not get a good deal EA would virtually demand that it be origin exclusive. Meaning not optional if you wanted to play MWO you would have to sign up for origin.

if MWO ends up requiring origin (it wont, no way in hell) I will not play it.
I REALLY wanted to play BF3, but didn't get it,and I REALLY wanted to play mass effect 3, but didn't.

origin is a killer for me.

Please keep MWO off of Steam and Xfire thanks, now go back to watching your pending status like the rest of us.

Xfire? Xfire is just an amped up messenger service for gamers. It doesn't offer games at all. It's also entirely optional. If you don't like it, don't use it.

So this makes me wonder, does some of the Steam / Origin / Xfire(?) hate have something to do with having a chat overlay?

I have a lot of the FTP games on steem and would love to have this one join them. If it goes on origin I guess I'll have wasted my money on founders.

Valve is in the business of making money.

If you should ever have a dispute with the company, you will better understand how Valve treats its customer base.

I've had several reasons to contact Steam for support over the years (OS purchases, minor DLC/cd key issues). Although some were frustrating to deal with (the first reply is always an auto 'Have you tried.. email)', an ability to remain patient and explain myself clearly and succinctly has seen all issues resolved to satisfaction. In my experience, they've been far better than others I could mention.

Edit:

Tribes: Ascend on Steam being the most recent for me. Origin though? I'll only load it up to play an EA game if there's no other option.

This community will get childish and complaining players. Naive to think that only Steam could cause it to this community. Every community, with or without Steam, has players that only complain.

Spare us the elitism, please.

Every developer has done bad things, however EA is the only one that stands out as the one that did them all, and then some. They're the ones who say "Games are too expensive." and still sell their games at a high price point. They have bad PR, Bad Marketting, Horrible Support, they're shoving corporatism down the throats of their artists.

Here: http://www.escapistm...People-Hate-EA. Jim articulates my points a lot better than I can.

I'm really sick of people saying I don't want MWO to be on Steam because I hate it. I really don't like steam ether but having MWO on Steam would be a good thing it would bring players to the game. If you don't like steam don't use it nobody has ever said anything or even made the slightest hint about this being steam exclusive.

I can tell you I will not be getting the game on steam, but there is definitely hundreds of people who would and definitely thousands who would see the game and check it out.

So I say don't stop with steam get it on everything like it. I see absolutely no downside to MWO being on steam or any other... what is the name for these things anyway?

Well, like others have said, at first they should just stick to distributing through IGP. After maybe 6 months, a Steam release might make sense to boost the playerbase.

Problem is then you have a bunch of kiddies who have never played Mechwarrior and dont understand the RoE honor system.

Dont put the game on steam.

We cant answer this at this point. Obviously steam's community and reach is amazing. However it also comes at extreme expense on the games revenue stream.

From here http://mwomercs.com/...__1#entry499571 in accordance with prophecy.

I just hope they can say "NO" if they want too.

But it didn't work on Steam. :| Tribes Ascend has degenerated into Assault-class **** fights in 80% of the matches I've played in the last few months.

I don't want Assault ****-fights on MechWarrior.

Lol indeed. All I have to say to the guy who even brought up Origin is this. "Enjoy your spyware buddy."

I dont understand why you guy are against them getting MWO on steam... It would get the game out to a larger audience, therefore more money for the dev's which would equal more/better extended support for the game... And yes at first the would be more TF2 kiddies around... But once they realize that the game is more strategic they would just stop playing which would initially be more money for the devs therefore in the long run a better experience for the true MW fans...
