Look up introversion some time, who were brought out of bankruptcy and back to having a full team from one weekend sale. But there are plenty of other examples.
Within the indy games sector, getting on steam is kinda the "goal". There are other platforms out there, but steam wrecks them in terms not just of sales and player base size, but in terms of money to the developers pockets.
Although, everything is starting to shift around a bit because of Kickstarter and all the indie bundles after the success of the Humble Bundle, but I don't think steam is going anywhere. Honestly, I consider them one of the best things to happen to PC gaming in a long time.
Origin kinda sucks right now but I hope they work it up into a more viable platform. Its improved a bit since it started out so it might still happen. Having a "second steam" would be good for the industry I think.
And I still don't get the EA hate. They haven't done anything really that every other AAA is long guilty of, and have actually showed quite a lot of support for smaller/independent developers (Most recently, Origin has a program where EA won't take any money from the first month sales of any kickstarter-funded project). They used to be the bad guys- I'll never forgive them for Westwood Studios- but since they reorganized they've been, in my opinion, a lot more consumer friendly.

Steam has an impossibly large userbase and is typically pretty good about maintaining a good relationship with developers. I'd wager it a pretty good thing for MWO.

As for MWO on origin... OH HELL NO... Ok with that out of my system. I would be willing to put money down that if IGP and PGI went and had a sit down with EA. That while they may or may not get a good deal EA would virtually demand that it be origin exclusive. Meaning not optional if you wanted to play MWO you would have to sign up for origin.

if MWO ends up requiring origin (it wont, no way in hell) I will not play it.
I REALLY wanted to play BF3, but didn't get it,and I REALLY wanted to play mass effect 3, but didn't.
origin is a killer for me.

Xfire? Xfire is just an amped up messenger service for gamers. It doesn't offer games at all. It's also entirely optional. If you don't like it, don't use it.
So this makes me wonder, does some of the Steam / Origin / Xfire(?) hate have something to do with having a chat overlay?

If you should ever have a dispute with the company, you will better understand how Valve treats its customer base.
I've had several reasons to contact Steam for support over the years (OS purchases, minor DLC/cd key issues). Although some were frustrating to deal with (the first reply is always an auto 'Have you tried.. email)', an ability to remain patient and explain myself clearly and succinctly has seen all issues resolved to satisfaction. In my experience, they've been far better than others I could mention.
Edit:

Tribes: Ascend on Steam being the most recent for me. Origin though? I'll only load it up to play an EA game if there's no other option.

Every developer has done bad things, however EA is the only one that stands out as the one that did them all, and then some. They're the ones who say "Games are too expensive." and still sell their games at a high price point. They have bad PR, Bad Marketting, Horrible Support, they're shoving corporatism down the throats of their artists.

I can tell you I will not be getting the game on steam, but there is definitely hundreds of people who would and definitely thousands who would see the game and check it out.
So I say don't stop with steam get it on everything like it. I see absolutely no downside to MWO being on steam or any other... what is the name for these things anyway?

Well, like others have said, at first they should just stick to distributing through IGP. After maybe 6 months, a Steam release might make sense to boost the playerbase.

But it didn't work on Steam. :| Tribes Ascend has degenerated into Assault-class **** fights in 80% of the matches I've played in the last few months.
I don't want Assault ****-fights on MechWarrior.

Lol indeed. All I have to say to the guy who even brought up Origin is this. "Enjoy your spyware buddy."
