Read the forums, watch the videos, then roll the dice!

It's okay. A lot of people are in your situation. If you're still playing the game when you do get a job and get things in order then you can buy a few nice cockpit decorations and call it even. :D

There are plenty of games for which there are only closed betas, particularly for non-MMO's. And, yet, people still pay out the purchase price for those games without the prior opportunity to play them. Paying for a game you haven't yet tried isn't new. In fact, I'd dare say that it's more common than the try-before-you-buy model. I certainly didn't get to playtest Skyrim, Mass Effect, or countless other games before I plunked down money on them.

I just can't get a chance to at least try the game.
I played Battletech in grade school and LOVED it, now, nobody plays the table game so this is my one last hope. I'd be happy to be a founder but I have to at least try the game.

If you have to think about it, then it isn't for you.

That was said about SW:TOR, Diablo 3, Mass Effect 3, and probably a handful of other titles. Clearly videos can be disceiving.

To be fair to Mass Effect 3, I enjoyed the hell out of it until the ending! :) The coop game added some life to it.
Diablo 3 is kinda hit and miss, SWTOR I was in the early open beta and tried to warn them, oh well.

When you go to your local best buy and pick up a game box, you probably havent tried the game yet. The vast majority of games purchased are purchased prior to experiencing them. Also, keep in mind that the founders pack promises an early look at the game, You can actually play it for free when it is released, having paid nothing. In short, I just fed the troll. *slaps self*

Wrong, it is not a pre-order of any kind.

Go back and re-read what it is. "A collectors item for the die-hard fans on the franchise"

not just for the die hard at all i've hardly ever played any of the other mech games,
but i felt this was worthy of my cash, so went for a founders pack not sure on what mech I'd enjoy the most i got all 4 :)

This is not necessarily true since many PC games have demos that you can download to "try before you buy".

The vast majority do not. Thus, what he said is true.

I just love the "Demo" argument. So let me see...SOME PC and Console games have demo's, yes. Larger titles do release a demo at some point while lesser games may involve a unlock feature so you download the full game but only get 5% of the content if that. BUT...Demo's can lie to.

I have played many a game where the demo was excellent, a finely tuned masterpiece that made me want to play the game. Then after buying the game I found out that the demo was a lie, that that finely tuned masterpiece did not apply to the totality of the game. Demo's are not the panacea of gaming truth.

The truth is you take a chance with everything. You can test drive a car, but after getting it...will it perform to your liking in a month, two...a year? When was the last time you wandered into a target and got a "demo" of detergent, fabric softener, Clorox Wipes, new shoes? And how often do demo's for games come out days if not months after the release? More often the before I will tell you.

This world is one full of buying things sight unseen...so to expect that you will get to see the game before you pay with this...overly optimistic at best I would say. Life is a gamble...so you either place a bet or leave the game...simple as that.

This thread still going?? ;)

Seriously the OP has 1 post.. this was there first and only.. maybe even their last. The only people chiming in to back up the OP are other low-post count people who are remaining on a low-post count even after this thread was born.

Low-post count by itself doesn't eman anything but with everything else tacked on..

Anyway.. just surprised this thread isn't hidden under pages of other threads. *shrugs*

I've just signed up as founder too, the game looks nice and I think it's worth the money.
One more reason why f2p seems to work, eh ?;)

That is a fair assessment as fewer and fewer games are offering demos and those games can be bad as well. However at least with a demo you don't have to pay for the game first. Here, you are paying for a chance at something that may fail. What happens if all of the hype surrounding this game turns out to be "a lie"? Will you regret having dropped $120?

No, Weather I pay $120 now for this, or $120 later for a couple PS3 Games, or three $40 games through steam, the risk is still the same. I have spent way more on bad games then $120. So as I said, you either put your cash on the table and roll the dice...or you walk away. There is no room for regret either way.

probably but that is the chance you take. Like gambling, if you cant afford to risk the money then don't. play it for free later.

No.

I would regret the game I've waited 10 years for turning out badly, and the fact that we would probably not get another shot at somebody doing this game right.

I wouldn't regret risking my money because if this game is good it will last for many years and I'll be proud to have supported it, quite apart from all the good stuff in the Founder's pack. If it's bad it won't be the wasted money that makes me sad.

I think we're losing sight of the fact that the game is going to be free to play.
You don't need a 'demo' of a free to play game do you?
Really?

As others have said, the Founders thing is a 'Collectors Edition' from the perspective of PGI, and from the players perspective it's a 'Thank you' to the dev's for bringing the franchise back to life.

Way I see it, those of us who invest, 30, 60, or 120 bucks on this game, are helping to ensure that the quality of the game is beyond reproach, and that they can give us content that will make us proud to be the mech piloting geeks that we are! We have waited 10+ years for a Mechwarrior game, and this one looks to be the best yet, maybe, enough to pump enough life back into the franchise that a movie studio may tip its hat and say: We have the rights, let's do this! and then we have not only a rock solid game thanks to our investments, but a movie too <if this game can make that happen, I will be impressed and gobsmacked>! Support PGI, Support the universe!

also, paying 30-120 bucks is no different than buying a video game from like EBGames. 9 times out of 10, its buy on faith of the company and past titles in the series.

Great...another whiner....

The founders has nothing to do with the game, it's just a collectors item for the people who love the series. The items/currency you get is just a bonus.

I guess I should add that its also about supporting a company who is bringing back a game we havent seen in 10 years.

He's not whining,

To the huge group of founders jumping this guy like he kicked your dog, Way to treat somebody making their first post here.
